  • 🪪 -(이)래요 [-i-rae-yo / -rae-yo] reports noun statements: 학생이라고 해요 → 학생이래요 [hak-saeng-i-ra-go hae-yo → hak-saeng-i-rae-yo] “They say they’re a student.”

🌈 The Big Picture

Korean speakers often shorten indirect quotes in everyday conversation. Instead of saying the full -다고 해요, -라고 해요, or -으라고 해요, they often use compact forms like -대요 and -래요. ⚡
Full form:
  • 민수가 오늘 바쁘다고 해요. [min-su-ga o-neul ba-ppeu-da-go hae-yo] — Minsu says they’re busy today. 🗓️
Short form:
  • 민수가 오늘 바쁘대요. [min-su-ga o-neul ba-ppeu-dae-yo] — Minsu says they’re busy today. 🗓️
Full form:
  • 지우가 학생이라고 해요. [ji-u-ga hak-saeng-i-ra-go hae-yo] — Jiu says they’re a student. 🎒
Short form:
  • 지우가 학생이래요. [ji-u-ga hak-saeng-i-rae-yo] — Jiu says they’re a student. 🎒
The short forms are especially useful when you’re passing along information quickly: “They say…,” “I heard…,” “Someone told me…,” or “They said to…” 📨

🎨 The Core Short-Quote Family

1. Statement quotes → -대요

Use -대요 for shortened statement reports.
  • 좋다고 해요 → 좋대요 [jo-ta-go hae-yo → jo-tae-yo] — They say it’s good. 👍
  • 바쁘다고 해요 → 바쁘대요 [ba-ppeu-da-go hae-yo → ba-ppeu-dae-yo] — They say they’re busy. 🗓️
  • 간다고 해요 → 간대요 [gan-da-go hae-yo → gan-dae-yo] — They say they’re going. 🚶
  • 먹는다고 해요 → 먹는대요 [meong-neun-da-go hae-yo → meong-neun-dae-yo] — They say they’re eating. 🍚

2. Noun statement quotes → -(이)래요

Use 이래요 after consonant-ending nouns and 래요 after vowel-ending nouns.
  • 학생이라고 해요 → 학생이래요 [hak-saeng-i-ra-go hae-yo → hak-saeng-i-rae-yo] — They say they’re a student. 🎒
  • 의사라고 해요 → 의사래요 [ui-sa-ra-go hae-yo → ui-sa-rae-yo] — They say they’re a doctor. 🩺
  • 친구라고 해요 → 친구래요 [chin-gu-ra-go hae-yo → chin-gu-rae-yo] — They say they’re a friend. 🤝

3. Command quotes → -(으)래요

The same-looking 래요 also appears in shortened command reports. Context tells you the meaning.
  • 가라고 해요 → 가래요 [ga-ra-go hae-yo → ga-rae-yo] — They say to go. 🚶
  • 먹으라고 해요 → 먹으래요 [meo-geu-ra-go hae-yo → meo-geu-rae-yo] — They say to eat. 🍚
  • 기다리라고 해요 → 기다리래요 [gi-da-ri-ra-go hae-yo → gi-da-ri-rae-yo] — They say to wait. ⏳
  • 가지 말라고 해요 → 가지 말래요 [ga-ji mal-la-go hae-yo → ga-ji mal-lae-yo] — They say not to go. 🚫

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

  1. 친구가 내일 온대요. [chin-gu-ga nae-il on-dae-yo] — My friend says they’re coming tomorrow. 🚪
      • 친구 = friend, 내일 = tomorrow, 오다 = to come.
  1. 선생님이 숙제가 많대요. [seon-saeng-nim-i suk-je-ga man-tae-yo] — The teacher says there is a lot of homework. 📚
      • 선생님 = teacher, 숙제 = homework, 많다 = to be many/much.
  1. 민수가 의사래요. [min-su-ga ui-sa-rae-yo] — Minsu says they’re a doctor. 🩺
      • 민수 = Minsu, 의사 = doctor.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Think in two steps:
  1. Build the full quote form.
  1. Shorten 고 해요 into the compact spoken ending.
Statement forms:
  • 좋다고 해요 → 좋대요 — They say it’s good. 👍
  • 간다고 해요 → 간대요 — They say they’re going. 🚶
  • 먹는다고 해요 → 먹는대요 — They say they’re eating. 🍚
  • 갔다고 해요 → 갔대요 — They say they went. 🧳
Noun and command forms:
  • 학생이라고 해요 → 학생이래요 — They say they’re a student. 🎒
  • 의사라고 해요 → 의사래요 — They say they’re a doctor. 🩺
  • 가라고 해요 → 가래요 — They say to go. 🚶
  • 먹으라고 해요 → 먹으래요 — They say to eat. 🍚
⚠️
Tiny spelling, big meaning: -대요 and -데요 are not the same. In this lesson, -대요 is hearsay/indirect quote: “They say…” 📰

📚 Cross-check note

The shortened quote forms -대요, -ㄴ대요, -는대요, -(이)래요, and command -(으)래요 were checked against korean.go.kr and standard Korean grammar references. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

These are not exactly synonyms, but they are useful quote-form neighbors:
  • -다고 해요 [-da-go hae-yo] — full statement quote; clearer and more formal than the short form.
  • -대요 [-dae-yo] — shortened spoken statement quote.
  • (이)라고 해요 [-i-ra-go hae-yo / -ra-go hae-yo] — full noun quote.
  • (이)래요 [-i-rae-yo / -rae-yo] — shortened noun quote.
  • -(으)라고 해요 [-eu-ra-go hae-yo / -ra-go hae-yo] — full command quote.
  • -(으)래요 [-eu-rae-yo / -rae-yo] — shortened command quote.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 좋데요 for “They say it’s good” → ✅ 좋대요. Hearsay uses , not . 📰
  • 먹대요 for “They say they’re eating” → ✅ 먹는대요. Action verb with consonant stem uses 는대요. 🍚
  • 학생래요 → ✅ 학생이래요. Consonant-ending noun needs 이래요. 🎒
  • 의사이래요 → ✅ 의사래요. Vowel-ending noun takes 래요. 🩺
  • ❌ Confusing 간대요 and 가래요 → ✅ 간대요 = “They say they’re going”; 가래요 = “They say to go.” 🚦
