TL;DR 🦄
- ⚖️ 만큼 [man-keum] means “as much as,” “as…as,” “to the same degree as,” or “to the extent that.”
- It compares amount, degree, effort, ability, similarity, or intensity.
- 🐘 코끼리만큼 커요. [ko-kki-ri-man-keum keo-yo] = It’s as big as an elephant.
🎧 Iru Helper Note — Use Korean Helper Widgets and listen to 나만큼 [na-man-keum], 친구만큼 [chin-gu-man-keum], 생각한 만큼 [saeng-ga-kan man-keum], and 노력한 만큼 [no-ryeo-kan man-keum]. Notice that noun + 만큼 sticks together, but verb/adjective modifier + 만큼 is spaced.
🌈 The Big Picture
Use 만큼 when you compare degree.
It can mean:
- “as much as”
- “as…as”
- “to the extent that”
- “as far as”
- “in proportion to”
- “as much as someone did/expected/knows”
Examples:
- 저는 언니만큼 키가 커요.
[jeo-neun eon-ni-man-keum ki-ga keo-yo] — I’m as tall as my older sister.
언니 [eon-ni] = older sister; 키 [ki] = height.
- 생각한 만큼 어렵지 않았어요.
[saeng-ga-kan man-keum eo-ryeop-ji a-na-sseo-yo] — It wasn’t as difficult as I thought.
생각하다 [saeng-ga-ka-da] = to think; 어렵다 [eo-ryeop-da] = to be difficult.
- 노력한 만큼 결과가 나왔어요.
[no-ryeo-kan man-keum gyeol-gwa-ga na-wa-sseo-yo] — The results came out as much as the effort I put in.
노력 [no-ryeok] = effort; 결과 [gyeol-gwa] = result.
The core idea is equal degree: one thing matches, measures against, or corresponds to another thing.

🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence
There are two learner-safe patterns.
Pattern A: Noun + 만큼
Use this when the comparison standard is a noun.
Noun + 만큼 + description/action
- 동생만큼 빨라요.
[dong-saeng-man-keum ppal-la-yo] — I’m as fast as my younger sibling.
- 바다만큼 넓어요.

Pattern B: Modifier + 만큼
Use this when the comparison standard is an action, state, amount, expectation, or experience.
Verb/adjective modifier + 만큼 + result/description
- 기대한 만큼 재미있었어요.
[gi-dae-han man-keum jae-mi-i-sseo-sseo-yo] — It was as fun as I expected.
- 필요한 만큼만 사세요.

🧩 General Formation Rule
After nouns: attach 만큼
- 나 [na] → 나만큼 [na-man-keum] — as much as me
- 친구 [chin-gu] → 친구만큼 [chin-gu-man-keum] — as much as a friend
- 전문가 [jeon-mun-ga] → 전문가만큼 [jeon-mun-ga-man-keum] — as much/as well as an expert
- 바다 [ba-da] → 바다만큼 [ba-da-man-keum] — as much/as wide as the sea
After verb/adjective modifiers: space before 만큼

- 공부하다 [gong-bu-ha-da] → 공부한 만큼 [gong-bu-han man-keum] — as much as one studied
- 필요하다 [pi-ryo-ha-da] → 필요한 만큼 [pi-ryo-han man-keum] — as much as needed
- 아프다 [a-peu-da] → 아픈 만큼 [a-peun man-keum] — as much as it hurts / because it hurts that much
Tense matters in modifier forms
- 먹은 만큼 [meo-geun man-keum] — as much as one ate
- 먹는 만큼 [meong-neun man-keum] — as much as one eats
- 먹을 만큼 [meo-geul man-keum] — enough to eat / as much as one will eat
This lesson focuses on 만큼 as comparison/degree. Later, -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 can also mean “since / given that” in reason-based sentences.
🚨 Nuance: Equal degree, not “similar appearance”
만큼 compares degree or amount.
Compare:
- 언니만큼 키가 커요.
[eon-ni-man-keum ki-ga keo-yo] — I’m as tall as my older sister.
Degree comparison: height.
- 언니처럼 말해요.
[eon-ni-cheo-reom ma-rae-yo] — I speak like my older sister.
Style/similarity comparison: manner.
만큼 is usually about how much. 처럼 is usually about like/as if/in the manner of.
🔍 만큼 vs Related Grammar

- 중요한 만큼 조심해야 해요.
[jung-yo-han man-keum jo-sim-hae-ya hae-yo] — Since it is important, we should be careful.
📚 Cross-check note
This lesson was checked against korean.go.kr guidance on 만큼. Korean.go.kr explains that 만큼 can be a particle attached after nouns, as in 이것만큼, 하늘만큼, and a dependent noun written separately after modifier endings like -은, -는, -을, as in 노력한 만큼, 주는 만큼, 들릴 만큼. Practical learner rule: noun + 만큼 sticks; modifier + 만큼 is spaced. ✅
🪞 Synonym Alert
Depending on the sentence, 만큼 can sound like:
- “as much as”
- “as…as”
- “to the same degree as”
- “as far as”
- “in proportion to”
- “to the extent that”
- “enough to” with -(으)ㄹ 만큼
Useful chunks:
- 나만큼 [na-man-keum] — as much as me
- 친구만큼 [chin-gu-man-keum] — as much as a friend
- 생각한 만큼 [saeng-ga-kan man-keum] — as much as one thought
- 필요한 만큼 [pi-ryo-han man-keum] — as much as needed
- 아는 만큼 [a-neun man-keum] — as much as one knows
- 노력한 만큼 [no-ryeo-kan man-keum] — as much as one worked/efforted
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ Spacing noun + 만큼 → ✅ 친구만큼, not 친구 만큼.
- ❌ Attaching modifier + 만큼 → ✅ 노력한 만큼, not 노력한만큼.
- ❌ Confusing 만큼 and 처럼 → ✅ 만큼 compares degree; 처럼 compares manner/similarity.
- ❌ Confusing 만큼 with 보다 → ✅ 만큼 = equal degree; 보다 더 = more than.
- ❌ Thinking 만큼 is only “as much as” → ✅ in -(으)ㄹ 만큼, it can feel like “enough to / to the point that.”
🎉 Now you can compare degree naturally: 나만큼, 친구만큼, 생각한 만큼, 노력한 만큼. Equality and degree grammar unlocked. ⚖️✨
