🌈 The Big Picture

When you need something — an item, help, time, information — Korean gives you a clean, simple pattern: N + 이/가 필요해요 [i/ga pi-ryo-hae-yo], meaning "[noun] is necessary (to me)" or, more naturally, "I need [noun]."

펜이 필요해요 — "I need a pen" (literally "a pen is necessary")

도움이 필요해요 — "I need help"

시간이 필요해요 — "I need time"

Notice that 필요하다 attaches to nouns, not verbs — so it pairs with 이/가, just like an adjective describing the noun. This is different from -고 싶다 (which attaches to verb stems and means "want to do").

🎭 Need vs. Want vs. Request

These three patterns often get mixed up, so here's how to keep them straight:

필요해요 — "I need [thing]" — about necessity, not preference.

갖고 싶어요 / 사고 싶어요 — "I want [thing]" — about desire, not necessity.

...좀 주세요 / ...해 주세요 — "Please give me [thing] / please do [action]" — a direct request, often used once you've identified what you need.

In practice, you'll often combine them: first state the need (필요해요), then make the request (주세요). For example: "물이 필요해요. 물 좀 주세요." ("I need water. Please give me some water.")

🦄 Grammar note: 있어요? is the simplest way to ask "do you have...?" — perfect for borrowing small items.

A: 와이파이 비밀번호가 필요한데요. 알려주실 수 있어요?

B: 네, 잠시만요. 여기 적어드릴게요.

A: "I need the wifi password. Could you let me know?" B: "Sure, one moment. I'll write it down for you."

🦄 Grammar note: Ending a request with -는데요 softens it — it sounds like you're explaining your situation rather than just demanding something.

A: 짐이 너무 많아서 좀 도와주실 수 있어요?

B: 그럼요! 이거 제가 들어드릴게요.

A: "I have so much luggage, could you help me a bit?" B: "Of course! I'll carry this for you."

🦄 Grammar note: 도와주실 수 있어요? is a polite, indirect way to ask for help — much softer than a blunt command.

🧭 Speaking Tip

There's a natural politeness ladder for requests: 주세요 (standard, polite — fine for most everyday situations), 주시겠어요? (more formal/polite — good for strangers, service staff, or slightly bigger asks), and 주실 수 있어요? (very polite, often used with 좀 — great for asking favors). When in doubt, add 좀 before your request — it softens almost anything, turning "give me water" into "could I get some water, please."

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ Mixing up 필요해요 (need, attaches to nouns with 이/가) with -고 싶어요 (want, attaches to verb stems).

❌ Making a request without 좀 — "물 주세요" works, but "물 좀 주세요" sounds noticeably more polite and natural.

❌ Using a blunt command form (반말 imperatives) with strangers or service staff — always default to 주세요/주시겠어요.

❌ Saying 죄송한데요 ("sorry, but...") only at the start and forgetting to actually state what you need — Koreans expect the request to follow immediately.
