๐ŸŒˆ The Big Picture

Adverbs are the seasoning of a Korean sentence โ€” they tell you how something happens. ๋นจ๋ฆฌ and ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ describe speed (quickly vs. slowly), ๋งค์šฐ and ์กฐ๊ธˆ describe degree (very vs. a little), and ์ž˜ describes quality (well). Unlike English, Korean adverbs almost always sit right before the verb or adjective they modify โ€” master that word order and these five words instantly make your sentences sound natural. ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿข

๐ŸŽจ The Core Adverb Family

1. ๋นจ๋ฆฌ โ€” quickly ๐Ÿƒ
Describes the speed of an action โ€” used with action verbs.
  • ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ์˜ค์„ธ์š”. (Come quickly.)
  • ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๋จน์–ด์š”. (Eat quickly.)
โ€” Grammar note: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ is often paired with imperatives or suggestions (-์„ธ์š”, -์ž) and goes directly before the verb.
2. ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ โ€” slowly ๐Ÿข
The opposite of ๋นจ๋ฆฌ โ€” describes a slow, careful pace.
  • ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ๋งํ•ด ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. (Please speak slowly.)
  • ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ๋“œ์„ธ์š”. (Take your time eating.)
โ€” Grammar note: ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ํ•˜์„ธ์š” ("take your time") is a very common polite phrase on its own.
3. ๋งค์šฐ โ€” very (formal) ๐Ÿ’ฏ
An intensifier for adjectives, common in writing and formal speech.
  • ์ด ์˜ํ™”๋Š” ๋งค์šฐ ์žฌ๋ฏธ์žˆ์–ด์š”. (This movie is very interesting.)
  • ๋‚ ์”จ๊ฐ€ ๋งค์šฐ ์ถ”์›Œ์š”. (The weather is very cold.)
โ€” Grammar note: ๋งค์šฐ precedes the adjective directly. In casual speech, ์•„์ฃผ/๋„ˆ๋ฌด/์ง„์งœ are more common.
4. ์กฐ๊ธˆ โ€” a little / a bit ๐Ÿค
Modifies verbs and adjectives to soften them, or quantifies a small amount.
  • ์กฐ๊ธˆ ๋น„์‹ธ์š”. (It's a bit expensive.)
  • ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด๋ฅผ ์กฐ๊ธˆ ์•Œ์•„์š”. (I know a little Korean.)
โ€” Grammar note: the casual contraction is ์ข€ โ€” ์ข€ ๋„์™€์ฃผ์„ธ์š” ("please help me a bit") is extremely common.
5. ์ž˜ โ€” well ๐Ÿ‘
Modifies a verb to mean "well" or "skillfully."
  • ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด๋ฅผ ์ž˜ํ•ด์š”. (I speak Korean well.)
  • ์ž˜ ์žค์–ด์š”? (Did you sleep well?)
โ€” Grammar note: ์ž˜ + ํ•˜๋‹ค = ์ž˜ํ•˜๋‹ค ("to be good at / do well"), a single verb in its own right.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How They Work in a Sentence

  1. ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ์˜ค์„ธ์š”, ํ•˜์ง€๋งŒ ๊ธธ์ด ๋ฏธ๋„๋Ÿฌ์šฐ๋‹ˆ๊นŒ ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ์šด์ „ํ•˜์„ธ์š”.
    1. (Come quickly, but since the road is slippery, drive slowly.)
โ€” ๋นจ๋ฆฌ and ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ contrast speed depending on the situation.
  1. ์ด ์ผ€์ดํฌ๋Š” ๋งค์šฐ ๋ง›์žˆ์ง€๋งŒ ์กฐ๊ธˆ๋งŒ ๋จน์—ˆ์–ด์š”.
    1. (This cake is very delicious, but I only ate a little.)
โ€” ๋งค์šฐ intensifies the adjective ๋ง›์žˆ๋‹ค; ์กฐ๊ธˆ quantifies how much was eaten.
  1. ์ฒ˜์Œ์—๋Š” ์–ด๋ ค์› ์ง€๋งŒ ์ด์ œ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด๋ฅผ ์ž˜ํ•ด์š”.
    1. (At first it was hard, but now I'm good at Korean.)
      โ€” ์ž˜ + ํ•˜๋‹ค = ์ž˜ํ•˜๋‹ค, "to be good at."

๐Ÿงฉ General Formation Rule

  • ๋นจ๋ฆฌ/์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ โ€” manner adverbs describing speed; placed directly before the verb
  • ๋งค์šฐ/์กฐ๊ธˆ โ€” degree adverbs; ๋งค์šฐ intensifies (formal register), ์กฐ๊ธˆ softens or quantifies
  • ์ž˜ โ€” placed directly before the verb, often forming ์ž˜ํ•˜๋‹ค ("to be good at")
  • ์กฐ๊ธˆ โ†’ ์ข€ in casual speech, both standalone and as a softener for requests

๐Ÿชž Synonym Alert

  • ๋นจ๋ฆฌ vs ์ผ์ฐ โ€” ๋นจ๋ฆฌ = "quickly" (the speed of an action); ์ผ์ฐ = "early" (a point in time). ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ์™€์š” (come quickly) vs. ์ผ์ฐ ์™€์š” (come early).
  • ๋งค์šฐ vs ๋„ˆ๋ฌด vs ์•„์ฃผ โ€” ๋งค์šฐ is formal/written; ์•„์ฃผ is neutral and common in speech; ๋„ˆ๋ฌด originally meant "excessively" but is now often used casually like "very."
  • ์กฐ๊ธˆ vs ์ข€ โ€” ์กฐ๊ธˆ is the fuller, slightly more formal form; ์ข€ is the casual contraction, and also softens requests.
  • ์ž˜ vs ์ž˜ํ•˜๋‹ค โ€” ์ž˜ is the adverb "well"; ์ž˜ํ•˜๋‹ค is the standalone verb "to do well / be skilled," built from ์ž˜ + ํ•˜๋‹ค.
  • ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ vs ๋А๋ฆฌ๊ฒŒ โ€” both can mean "slowly," but ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ is about pace in everyday requests ("take it slow"), while ๋А๋ฆฌ๊ฒŒ describes an inherently slow speed or process.

โš ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • โŒ Confusing ๋นจ๋ฆฌ (quickly) with ์ผ์ฐ (early) โ†’ โœ… ๋นจ๋ฆฌ = speed, ์ผ์ฐ = time.
  • โŒ Using ๋งค์šฐ in casual conversation โ†’ โœ… ์•„์ฃผ/๋„ˆ๋ฌด/์ง„์งœ sound more natural in speech; save ๋งค์šฐ for formal writing.
  • โŒ Thinking ์กฐ๊ธˆ and ์ข€ are different words โ†’ โœ… they're the same word โ€” ์ข€ is just the casual contraction.
  • โŒ Treating ์ž˜ ํ–ˆ๋‹ค as two separate ideas โ†’ โœ… ์ž˜ํ•˜๋‹ค is its own verb meaning "to be good at something."
  • โŒ Placing adverbs after the verb โ†’ โœ… Korean adverbs go directly before the verb or adjective they modify.
