TL;DR β€” Basic Vowels
  • 🎡 Korean has 10 basic vowels: γ…Β γ…‘Β γ…“Β γ…•Β γ…—Β γ…›Β γ…œΒ γ… Β γ…‘Β γ…£\color{purple}{\text{ㅏ γ…‘ γ…“ γ…• γ…— γ…› γ…œ γ…  γ…‘ γ…£}}.
  • πŸͺ‘ A vowel-only syllable needs the silent γ…‡\color{purple}{\text{γ…‡}} placeholder, like μ•„\color{purple}{\text{μ•„}} [a] and 였\color{purple}{\text{였}} [o].
  • πŸ“ Vertical vowels sit to the right of the consonant; horizontal vowels sit below it.

and type each vowel or syllable to hear it aloud. Practice tricky pairs like γ…“\color{purple}{\text{γ…“}} [eo] vs. γ…—\color{purple}{\text{γ…—}} [o], and γ…‘\color{purple}{\text{γ…‘}} [eu] vs. γ…œ\color{purple}{\text{γ…œ}} [u]. 🎧

🌈 The Big Picture

Basic vowels are the first sound pieces that make Korean syllables readable. Some are vertical, some are horizontal, and four of them have y-twin versions made by adding one extra short stroke.
The silent γ…‡\color{purple}{\text{γ…‡}} is important from the start. A vowel sound can begin a syllable, but written Korean still needs a consonant slot, so γ…‡\color{purple}{\text{γ…‡}} acts like a silent chair.

🎨 The Core Vowel Family

Plain five

  • ㅏ\color{purple}{\text{ㅏ}} [a] (β€œah”) πŸ‘„
  • γ…“\color{purple}{\text{γ…“}} [eo] (β€œuh,” open mouth) πŸ—£οΈ
  • γ…—\color{purple}{\text{γ…—}} [o] (β€œoh,” rounded lips) πŸŒ•
  • γ…œ\color{purple}{\text{γ…œ}} [u] (β€œoo”) πŸ’¨
  • γ…‘\color{purple}{\text{γ…‘}} [eu] (flat-lipped β€œeu”) 😐

Y-twin vowels

  • γ…‘\color{purple}{\text{γ…‘}} [ya] (y + ㅏ) πŸ›οΈ
  • γ…•\color{purple}{\text{γ…•}} [yeo] (y + γ…“) πŸŒ€
  • γ…›\color{purple}{\text{γ…›}} [yo] (y + γ…—) πŸ‘‹
  • γ… \color{purple}{\text{γ… }} [yu] (y + γ…œ) πŸͺ΅

Lone wolf

  • γ…£\color{purple}{\text{γ…£}} [i] (β€œee”) 🐝

  • μ—¬μœ \color{purple}{\text{μ—¬μœ }} [yeo-yu] (leisure/breathing room) 🧘
  • 이\color{purple}{\text{이}} [i] (tooth/this) 🦷
  • μ•„μš°\color{purple}{\text{μ•„μš°}} [a-u] (younger sibling, old-school) πŸ‘¦

πŸ› οΈ How They Work in a Syllable

Pattern 1 β€” Silent γ…‡ placeholder

  • γ…‡Β + ㅏ =Β μ•„\color{purple}{\text{γ…‡ + ㅏ = μ•„}} [a] πŸ‘„
  • γ…‡Β +Β γ…—Β = 였\color{purple}{\text{γ…‡ + γ…— = 였}} [o] πŸŒ•
  • γ…‡Β +Β γ…œΒ = 우\color{purple}{\text{γ…‡ + γ…œ = 우}} [u] πŸ’¨
  • γ…‡Β +Β γ…£Β = 이\color{purple}{\text{γ…‡ + γ…£ = 이}} [i] 🐝

Pattern 2 β€” Vertical vowels sit right

  • μ•„\color{purple}{\text{μ•„}} [a] = γ…‡ + ㅏ ➑️
  • 이\color{purple}{\text{이}} [i] = γ…‡ + γ…£ ➑️

Pattern 3 β€” Horizontal vowels sit below

  • 였\color{purple}{\text{였}} [o] = γ…‡ + γ…— ⬇️
  • 우\color{purple}{\text{우}} [u] = γ…‡ + γ…œ ⬇️

🚨 Exception Rules

The y-twin rule is simple: add one extra short stroke.
  • ㅏ\color{purple}{\text{ㅏ}} β†’ γ…‘\color{purple}{\text{γ…‘}} [a β†’ ya]
  • γ…“\color{purple}{\text{γ…“}} β†’ γ…•\color{purple}{\text{γ…•}} [eo β†’ yeo]
  • γ…—\color{purple}{\text{γ…—}} β†’ γ…›\color{purple}{\text{γ…›}} [o β†’ yo]
  • γ…œ\color{purple}{\text{γ…œ}} β†’ γ… \color{purple}{\text{γ… }} [u β†’ yu]
γ…‘\color{purple}{\text{γ…‘}} and γ…£\color{purple}{\text{γ…£}} have no y-twin in this lesson.

πŸͺž Synonym Alert

No synonym pairs are needed here. Focus on sound, shape, placement, and the silent γ…‡\color{purple}{\text{γ…‡}}.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ Reading γ…“\color{purple}{\text{γ…“}} like β€œeh” β†’ βœ… it is closer to β€œuh.”
  • ❌ Reading γ…‘\color{purple}{\text{γ…‘}} like β€œyou” β†’ βœ… keep lips flat for [eu].
  • ❌ Writing ㅏ\color{purple}{\text{ㅏ}} alone as a full syllable β†’ βœ… write μ•„\color{purple}{\text{μ•„}}.
  • ❌ Putting γ…—\color{purple}{\text{γ…—}} to the right β†’ βœ… horizontal vowels go below.
πŸŽ‰ You now have the basic vowel toolkit: sound, shape, y-twins, silent γ…‡, and your first vowel-only words. Hangul is opening up. πŸ”“βœ¨
