TL;DR 🦄
- 🧨 -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에 means because of / due to, with a blame, fault, or negative-result feeling.
- 😬 It often sounds like “because of that bad cause…”: 비가 많이 온 탓에 길이 막혔어요. — Because it rained a lot, the roads were jammed.
- 🌗 Pair it mentally with 덕분에 (thanks to): 덕분에 is usually positive, while 탓에 is usually negative.
🎧 Iru Helper Note — Use Korean Helper Widgets to compare 선생님 덕분에 합격했어요 and 준비를 못 한 탓에 떨어졌어요. One gives credit; the other assigns blame. ⚖️
🌈 The Big Picture
탓 means fault, blame, or cause of something bad. So -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에 is used when a cause leads to a negative result and the speaker is pointing to that cause as the reason things went wrong.
Think:
- “because of…”
- “due to…”
- “as a result of…”
- “thanks to… but in the bad way” 😅
Examples:
- 날씨가 나쁜 탓에 여행을 취소했어요.
[nal-ssi-ga na-ppeun ta-se yeo-haeng-eul chwi-so-hae-sseo-yo] — Because the weather was bad, we canceled the trip. 🌧️
- 준비를 못 한 탓에 시험을 망쳤어요.
[jun-bi-reul mot han ta-se si-heo-meul mang-chyeo-sseo-yo] — Because I didn’t prepare, I messed up the exam. 📝
- 소음이 큰 탓에 잠을 못 잤어요.
[so-eu-mi keun ta-se ja-meul mot ja-sseo-yo] — Because the noise was loud, I couldn’t sleep. 🔊
🎨 The Core Pattern
1. Action verbs: -는 탓에 / -(으)ㄴ 탓에
Use -는 탓에 for ongoing/present-style causes and -(으)ㄴ 탓에 for completed/past causes.
- 비가 오다 → 비가 오는 탓에 — because it rains / is raining
- 준비를 못 하다 → 준비를 못 한 탓에 — because someone did not prepare
- 버스를 놓치다 → 버스를 놓친 탓에 — because someone missed the bus
2. Descriptive verbs/adjectives: -(으)ㄴ 탓에
- 춥다 → 추운 탓에 — because it is cold
- 바쁘다 → 바쁜 탓에 — because someone is busy
- 길이 좁다 → 길이 좁은 탓에 — because the road is narrow
3. Nouns: N 탓에
- 비 탓에 — because of the rain
- 실수 탓에 — because of a mistake
- 교통 체증 탓에 — because of traffic congestion
🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence
- 비가 많이 온 탓에 길이 막혔어요.
[bi-ga ma-ni on ta-se gi-ri ma-kyeo-sseo-yo] — Because it rained a lot, the roads were jammed. 🌧️
온 탓에 points to the rain as the cause of the problem.
- 제가 늦게 일어난 탓에 약속에 늦었어요.
[je-ga neut-ge i-reo-nan ta-se yak-so-ge neu-jeo-sseo-yo] — Because I woke up late, I was late to the appointment. 😴
The speaker blames their late wake-up.
- 소리가 너무 큰 탓에 집중을 못 했어요.
[so-ri-ga neo-mu keun ta-se jip-jung-eul mot hae-sseo-yo] — Because the sound was too loud, I couldn’t focus. 🔊
큰 탓에 describes a negative cause.
- 실수 탓에 파일이 삭제됐어요.
[sil-su ta-se pa-i-ri sak-je-dwae-sseo-yo] — Because of a mistake, the file was deleted. 💻
🧩 Formation Rule
Action verb — present/general cause: stem +
Noun: N 탓에
- 날씨 탓에 — because of the weather
- 소음 탓에 — because of the noise
- 제 실수 탓에 — because of my mistake
🔍 탓에 vs 덕분에
These are opposites in emotional direction.
덕분에 — thanks to, positive credit 🌟
- 선생님 덕분에 한국어가 늘었어요.
[seon-saeng-nim deok-bu-ne han-gu-geo-ga neu-reo-sseo-yo] — Thanks to the teacher, my Korean improved.
탓에 — because of, negative blame 🧨
- 제 실수 탓에 문제가 생겼어요.
[je sil-su ta-se mun-je-ga saeng-gyeo-sseo-yo] — Because of my mistake, a problem happened.
Awkward:
- ❌ 선생님 탓에 한국어가 늘었어요.
This sounds like the teacher is being blamed for your Korean improving — strange unless joking.
Natural:
- ✅ 선생님 덕분에 한국어가 늘었어요.
🔍 탓에 vs Other Negative Cause Grammar
-(으)ㄴ/는 탓에
Blames or identifies a negative cause.
- 준비를 못 한 탓에 떨어졌어요. — I failed because I didn’t prepare.
-는 바람에
Unexpected event causes a bad result.
- 비가 오는 바람에 늦었어요. — Because it suddenly/unfortunately rained, I was late.
-느라고
Someone was occupied doing an action, so something was missed or sacrificed.
- 공부하느라고 전화를 못 받았어요. — I couldn’t answer because I was studying.
-기 때문에
General strong reason, neutral.
- 비가 오기 때문에 늦을 것 같아요. — Because it is raining, I think I’ll be late.
🚫 Usage Limits
Use -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에 mostly when:
- the result is negative
- someone/something is being blamed
- the sentence has a regretful or critical feeling
- the cause is something that made the situation worse
Avoid it when:
- the result is clearly positive
- you want to thank someone
- you need a completely neutral reason
- the sentence is a request or command where -(으)니까 would sound more natural
Awkward:
- ❌ 친구 탓에 즐거웠어요. — Because of my friend, I had fun. (sounds like blaming the friend for fun)
Natural:
- ✅ 친구 덕분에 즐거웠어요.
- ✅ 친구를 만나서 즐거웠어요.
📚 Cross-check note
This lesson’s explanation of -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에 as a negative-cause or blame-oriented expression aligns with standard Korean grammar descriptions. It also connects with related lessons like Unintended Negative Result: -는 바람에, Sacrificing Time/Effort: -느라고, Because of / Due to: -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에, and The Strong Reason: -기 때문에. ✅
🪞 Synonym Alert
These all explain causes, but their emotional direction differs:
- -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에 — because of / due to; blame or negative cause 🧨
- 탓이다 — it is someone/something’s fault
- 덕분에 — thanks to; positive cause 🌟
- -기 때문에 — because; neutral/strong reason
- -는 바람에 — because of an unexpected event; negative result 🌪️
- -느라고 — because someone was occupied doing something; usually inconvenient result 🏃
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ Using 탓에 for positive results → ✅ Use 덕분에 or -아서/어서.
- ❌ 비가 와요 탓에 → ✅ 비가 오는 탓에 / 비가 온 탓에.
- ❌ 좋은 탓에 합격했어요 → ✅ 좋은 덕분에 or 좋아서, depending on the sentence.
- ❌ Forgetting the negative nuance → ✅ 탓 usually points blame.
- ❌ Mixing 탓에 and 덕분에 randomly → ✅ Check whether the result is bad or good.
🎉 탓에 is your “because of that problem/fault…” grammar. Use it when you want Korean to sound like it is pointing at the cause and saying, “Yep, that’s why this went badly.” 🕵️♀️

- Don’t attach after 요.
- Don’t use 탓에 for happy results.
- Descriptive verbs use -(으)ㄴ 탓에.
- Completed actions often use -(으)ㄴ 탓에.
