🎯
TL;DR β€” Color Vocabulary
  • 🎨 Korean colors can appear as descriptive verbs, modifiers before nouns, or -색 color nouns.
  • 🌈 The Big 5 color verbs β€” λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€}}, νŒŒλž—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{νŒŒλž—λ‹€}}, λ…Έλž—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{λ…Έλž—λ‹€}}, κΉŒλ§£λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{κΉŒλ§£λ‹€}}, ν•˜μ–—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜μ–—λ‹€}} β€” are γ…Ž-irregular.
  • 🧺 Plain color nouns like 보라색\color{purple}{\text{보라색}}, μ΄ˆλ‘μƒ‰\color{purple}{\text{μ΄ˆλ‘μƒ‰}}, and κ°ˆμƒ‰\color{purple}{\text{κ°ˆμƒ‰}} behave like nouns, not verbs.

and type color words or full color sentences to hear them aloud. Pay special attention to the γ…Ž-irregular forms like λΉ¨κ°œμš”\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°œμš”}} [bbal-gae-yo], νŒŒλž˜μš”\color{purple}{\text{νŒŒλž˜μš”}} [pa-rae-yo], and ν•˜μ–˜μš”\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜μ–˜μš”}} [ha-yae-yo]. 🎧

🌈 The Big Picture

Korean colors come in a few useful shapes. Some colors are descriptive verbs, so they can describe how something looks. Some colors become modifier forms before nouns. Other colors are simple -색\color{purple}{\text{-색}} [saek] nouns.
The main trick is choosing the right shape:
  • Predicate: μ‚¬κ³ΌλŠ”Β λΉ¨κ°œμš”.\color{purple}{\text{μ‚¬κ³ΌλŠ” λΉ¨κ°œμš”.}} [sa-gwa-neun bbal-gae-yo] (The apple is red.) 🍎
  • Modifier: 빨간 사과\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°„ 사과}} [bbal-gan sa-gwa] (a red apple) 🍎
  • Noun: λ³΄λΌμƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.\color{purple}{\text{λ³΄λΌμƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.}} [bo-ra-sae-gi-e-yo] (It is purple.) πŸ‡

🎨 The Core Color Family

The Big 5 β€” γ…Ž-irregular descriptive verbs

  • λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€}} [bbal-ga-ta] (to be red) 🍎
  • νŒŒλž—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{νŒŒλž—λ‹€}} [pa-ra-ta] (to be blue) 🌊
  • λ…Έλž—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{λ…Έλž—λ‹€}} [no-ra-ta] (to be yellow) 🍌
  • κΉŒλ§£λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{κΉŒλ§£λ‹€}} [gga-ma-ta] (to be black) πŸˆβ€β¬›
  • ν•˜μ–—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜μ–—λ‹€}} [ha-ya-ta] (to be white) ❄️

Plain -색 nouns

  • μ΄ˆλ‘μƒ‰\color{purple}{\text{μ΄ˆλ‘μƒ‰}} [cho-rok-saek] (green) 🌿
  • 뢄홍색\color{purple}{\text{뢄홍색}} [bun-hong-saek] (pink) 🌸
  • 보라색\color{purple}{\text{보라색}} [bo-ra-saek] (purple) πŸ‡
  • 주황색\color{purple}{\text{주황색}} [ju-hwang-saek] (orange) 🍊
  • κ°ˆμƒ‰\color{purple}{\text{κ°ˆμƒ‰}} [gal-saek] (brown) πŸͺ΅
  • νšŒμƒ‰\color{purple}{\text{νšŒμƒ‰}} [hoe-saek] (gray) 🌫️
  • ν•˜λŠ˜μƒ‰\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜λŠ˜μƒ‰}} [ha-neul-saek] (sky blue) 🌀️
  • 남색\color{purple}{\text{남색}} [nam-saek] (navy) 🫐

πŸ› οΈ How They Work in a Sentence

Pattern 1 β€” Predicate form

  • μ‚¬κ³ΌλŠ”Β λΉ¨κ°œμš”.\color{purple}{\text{μ‚¬κ³ΌλŠ” λΉ¨κ°œμš”.}} [sa-gwa-neun bbal-gae-yo] (The apple is red.) 🍎
  • ν•˜λŠ˜μ΄Β νŒŒλž˜μš”.\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜λŠ˜μ΄ νŒŒλž˜μš”.}} [ha-neu-ri pa-rae-yo] (The sky is blue.) 🌌

Pattern 2 β€” Modifier before a noun

  • 빨간 사과\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°„ 사과}} [bbal-gan sa-gwa] (red apple) 🍎
  • ν•˜μ–€Β μ…”μΈ \color{purple}{\text{ν•˜μ–€ μ…”μΈ }} [ha-yan syeo-cheu] (white shirt) πŸ‘•

Pattern 3 β€” -색 noun with μ΄μ—μš”

  • μ΄Β κ°€λ°©μ€Β λ³΄λΌμƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.\color{purple}{\text{이 가방은 λ³΄λΌμƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.}} [i ga-bang-eun bo-ra-sae-gi-e-yo] (This bag is purple.) πŸ‘œ
  • κ·ΈΒ μžλ™μ°¨λŠ”Β μ£Όν™©μƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.\color{purple}{\text{κ·Έ μžλ™μ°¨λŠ” μ£Όν™©μƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”.}} [geu ja-dong-cha-neun ju-hwang-sae-gi-e-yo] (That car is orange.) πŸš—

🚨 Exception Rules

The Big 5 are γ…Ž-irregular. Before a vowel ending, the γ…Ž disappears and the vowel shifts.
  • λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°›λ‹€}} β†’ λΉ¨κ°œμš”\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°œμš”}} [bbal-gae-yo] / λΉ¨κ°„\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°„}} [bbal-gan]
  • νŒŒλž—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{νŒŒλž—λ‹€}} β†’ νŒŒλž˜μš”\color{purple}{\text{νŒŒλž˜μš”}} [pa-rae-yo] / νŒŒλž€\color{purple}{\text{νŒŒλž€}} [pa-ran]
  • λ…Έλž—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{λ…Έλž—λ‹€}} β†’ λ…Έλž˜μš”\color{purple}{\text{λ…Έλž˜μš”}} [no-rae-yo] / λ…Έλž€\color{purple}{\text{λ…Έλž€}} [no-ran]
  • κΉŒλ§£λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{κΉŒλ§£λ‹€}} β†’ κΉŒλ§€μš”\color{purple}{\text{κΉŒλ§€μš”}} [gga-mae-yo] / 까만\color{purple}{\text{까만}} [gga-man]
  • ν•˜μ–—λ‹€\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜μ–—λ‹€}} β†’ ν•˜μ–˜μš”\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜μ–˜μš”}} [ha-yae-yo] / ν•˜μ–€\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜μ–€}} [ha-yan]

πŸ“š Cross-check note

The color words, γ…Ž-irregular predicate forms, modifier forms, and synonym color nouns were checked against Korean-language dictionary and usage guidance from korean.go.kr. βœ…

πŸͺž Synonym Alert

  • Black: κΉŒλ§Œμƒ‰\color{purple}{\text{κΉŒλ§Œμƒ‰}} [gga-man-saek] (everyday) / 검은색\color{purple}{\text{검은색}} [geo-meun-saek] (more formal or written)
  • White: ν•˜μ–€μƒ‰\color{purple}{\text{ν•˜μ–€μƒ‰}} [ha-yan-saek] (everyday) / 흰색\color{purple}{\text{흰색}} [hin-saek] (more formal or written)

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ λΉ¨κ°›μ•„μš”\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°›μ•„μš”}} β†’ βœ… λΉ¨κ°œμš”\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°œμš”}} (γ…Ž disappears before the vowel ending).
  • ❌ 빨갛 사과\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°› 사과}} β†’ βœ… 빨간 사과\color{purple}{\text{λΉ¨κ°„ 사과}} (use the modifier form before a noun).
  • ❌ λ³΄λΌν•΄μš”\color{purple}{\text{λ³΄λΌν•΄μš”}} β†’ βœ… λ³΄λΌμƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”\color{purple}{\text{λ³΄λΌμƒ‰μ΄μ—μš”}} (-색 words are nouns).
  • ❌ 흔색\color{purple}{\text{흔색}} β†’ βœ… 흰색\color{purple}{\text{흰색}} (white synonym uses 흰, not 흔).
