π§ Iru Helper Note
Open Korean Helper Widgets and type color words or full color sentences to hear them aloud. Pay special attention to the γ
-irregular forms like [bbal-gae-yo], [pa-rae-yo], and [ha-yae-yo]. π§
π The Big Picture
Korean colors come in a few useful shapes. Some colors are descriptive verbs, so they can describe how something looks. Some colors become modifier forms before nouns. Other colors are simple [saek] nouns.
The main trick is choosing the right shape:
- Predicate: [sa-gwa-neun bbal-gae-yo] (The apple is red.) π
- Modifier: [bbal-gan sa-gwa] (a red apple) π
- Noun: [bo-ra-sae-gi-e-yo] (It is purple.) π
π¨ The Core Color Family
The Big 5 β γ -irregular descriptive verbs
- [bbal-ga-ta] (to be red) π
- [pa-ra-ta] (to be blue) π
- [no-ra-ta] (to be yellow) π
- [gga-ma-ta] (to be black) πββ¬
- [ha-ya-ta] (to be white) βοΈ
Plain -μ nouns
- [cho-rok-saek] (green) πΏ
- [bun-hong-saek] (pink) πΈ
- [bo-ra-saek] (purple) π
- [ju-hwang-saek] (orange) π
- [gal-saek] (brown) πͺ΅
- [hoe-saek] (gray) π«οΈ
- [ha-neul-saek] (sky blue) π€οΈ
- [nam-saek] (navy) π«
π οΈ How They Work in a Sentence
Pattern 1 β Predicate form
- [sa-gwa-neun bbal-gae-yo] (The apple is red.) π
- [ha-neu-ri pa-rae-yo] (The sky is blue.) π
Pattern 2 β Modifier before a noun
- [bbal-gan sa-gwa] (red apple) π
- [ha-yan syeo-cheu] (white shirt) π
Pattern 3 β -μ noun with μ΄μμ
- [i ga-bang-eun bo-ra-sae-gi-e-yo] (This bag is purple.) π
- [geu ja-dong-cha-neun ju-hwang-sae-gi-e-yo] (That car is orange.) π
π¨ Exception Rules
The Big 5 are γ
-irregular. Before a vowel ending, the γ
disappears and the vowel shifts.
- β [bbal-gae-yo] / [bbal-gan]
- β [pa-rae-yo] / [pa-ran]
- β [no-rae-yo] / [no-ran]
- β [gga-mae-yo] / [gga-man]
- β [ha-yae-yo] / [ha-yan]
π Cross-check note
The color words, γ
-irregular predicate forms, modifier forms, and synonym color nouns were checked against Korean-language dictionary and usage guidance from korean.go.kr. β
πͺ Synonym Alert
- Black: [gga-man-saek] (everyday) / [geo-meun-saek] (more formal or written)
- White: [ha-yan-saek] (everyday) / [hin-saek] (more formal or written)
β οΈ Pitfalls to Dodge
- β β β (γ disappears before the vowel ending).
- β β β (use the modifier form before a noun).
- β β β (-μ words are nouns).
- β β β (white synonym uses ν°, not ν).
π You now have the color toolbox: predicate forms, modifier forms, -μ nouns, and the black/white synonym pairs. Korean just got a full palette. π¨π
