🌈 The Big Picture

At Level 6, connectors are not just “glue.” They are logic labels. A connector tells the reader how the first idea relates to the second: cause, result, contrast, addition, categorization, or limitation. If the label is wrong, the whole sentence wobbles like a chair with one suspicious leg. 🪑
 
비문 [bi-mun] means an ungrammatical sentence, and 수정 [su-jeong] means correction/revision. In advanced Korean writing, you often need to fix sentences that are technically close but still unnatural, over-formal, wrongly spaced, or logically mismatched.

🎨 The Core Connector-Misuse Family

1. Meaning mismatch: the connector claims the wrong relationship

If the second clause adds another benefit, use an addition connector. If it opposes expectation, use a contrast connector. If it explains a cause, use a reason connector.

2. Form mismatch: the word before the connector has the wrong shape

Advanced connectors are picky. Verbs, adjectives, nouns, and completed actions do not all take the same form.
 
  • 정확하다 → 정확할 뿐만 아니라 [jeong-hwak-ha-da → jeong-hwa-kal ppun-man a-ni-ra] = not only accurate but also
  • 문제 → 문제일 뿐만 아니라 [mun-je → mun-je-il ppun-man a-ni-ra] = not only an issue but also
  • 조사하다 → 조사한바 [jo-sa-ha-da → jo-sa-han-ba] = upon investigating / as it was investigated
 

3. Spacing mismatch: attached ending vs spaced noun phrase

Some forms look dangerously similar. The connective ending -는바 attaches with no space, while the dependent noun 바 in phrases like 검토한 바에 따라 is spaced.

4. Register mismatch: formal connector in the wrong room

A polished report connector can sound strange in casual talk. -(으)ㄴ/는바, -건만, and -(으)ㄹ 따름이다 belong to formal or literary writing more than everyday chat. Don’t wear a courtroom robe to order coffee. ☕⚖️

🧩 General Formation Rule

Formal background: -(으)ㄴ/는바

  • Completed action: 검토하다 → 검토한바, 조사하다 → 조사한바
  • Present/passive situation: 확인되다 → 확인되는바, 요구되다 → 요구되는바
  • State: 중요하다 → 중요한바, 사실이다 → 사실인바
 

Addition: -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라

  • Verb/adjective stem + -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라: 줄이다 → 줄일 뿐만 아니라, 높다 → 높을 뿐만 아니라
  • Noun identity + 일 뿐만 아니라: 문제일 뿐만 아니라
  • Direct noun addition + N뿐만 아니라 N도: 정부뿐만 아니라 기업도
 

Categorization: -(으)ㄴ/는 축에 들다

  • Descriptive verb/adjective: 쉬운 축에 들어요, 비싼 축에 들어요
  • Action habit: 읽는 축에 들어요, 발표를 잘하는 축에 들어요
  • Completed action: 일찍 온 축에 들어요, 빨리 끝낸 축에 들어요
 

Result, contrast, and limitation

  • Result: 분석한 결과 = as a result of analyzing
  • Formal reason: 중요한 까닭에 = because it is important
  • Contrast: 줄었건만 = decreased, and yet
  • Limitation: 형식이 다를 뿐이지 = it is only that the format is different
