🌈 The Big Picture

비하다 means to compare or to judge something in comparison to another thing.
 
So -에 비하여 means:
  • compared to...
  • in comparison with...
  • relative to...
  • considering...
  • against the standard of...
 
Examples:
  • 작년에 비하여 올해는 매출이 늘었어요.
      • [jang-nyeo-ne bi-ha-yeo ol-hae-neun mae-chu-ri neu-reo-sseo-yo] — Compared to last year, sales increased this year. 📈
      작년 = last year; 올해 = this year; 매출 = sales; 늘다 = to increase.
  • 가격에 비해 품질이 좋아요.
      • [ga-gyeo-ge bi-hae pum-ji-ri jo-a-yo] — The quality is good compared to the price. 💎
      가격 = price; 품질 = quality.
  • 예상에 비하여 결과가 좋았어요.
      • [ye-sang-e bi-ha-yeo gyeol-gwa-ga jo-a-sseo-yo] — Compared to expectations, the result was good. ✅
      예상 = expectation; 결과 = result.

🎨 The Core Pattern

1. Noun + 에 비하여

Use this when your comparison anchor is a noun.
  • 작년 → 작년에 비하여 — compared to last year
  • 가격 → 가격에 비하여 — compared to the price
  • 예상 → 예상에 비하여 — compared to expectations
  • 다른 나라 → 다른 나라에 비하여 — compared to other countries
 

2. Noun + 에 비해

This is the shorter and very common form.
  • 작년에 비해 — compared to last year
  • 가격에 비해 — compared to the price
  • 예상에 비해 — compared to expectations
 
Examples:
  • 작년에 비해 한국어가 많이 늘었어요.
      • [jang-nyeo-ne bi-hae han-gu-geo-ga ma-ni neu-reo-sseo-yo] — Compared to last year, my Korean improved a lot. 🇰🇷
  • 이 가방은 가격에 비해 튼튼해요.
      • [i ga-bang-eun ga-gyeo-ge bi-hae teun-teun-hae-yo] — This bag is sturdy compared to the price. 🎒
 

3. -에 비하면

This means if you compare it to... / compared with... and often sets up a judgment.
  • 예전에 비하면 훨씬 좋아졌어요.
      • [ye-jeo-ne bi-ha-myeon hwol-ssin jo-a-jyeo-sseo-yo] — Compared to before, it has gotten much better.
  • 서울에 비하면 조용한 편이에요.
      • [seo-u-re bi-ha-myeon jo-yong-han pyeo-ni-e-yo] — Compared to Seoul, it is on the quiet side.
 

4. -와/과 비교하면

This is a more direct “if you compare with...” expression.
  • 작년과 비교하면 올해는 더 바빠요.
      • [jang-nyeon-gwa bi-gyo-ha-myeon ol-hae-neun deo ba-ppa-yo] — If we compare with last year, this year is busier.

Pattern A: A에 비하여 B가 더/덜 ...

Use this for clear comparison.
 
  • 작년에 비하여 올해는 날씨가 더 더워요.
      • [jang-nyeo-ne bi-ha-yeo ol-hae-neun nal-ssi-ga deo deo-wo-yo] — Compared to last year, the weather is hotter this year. ☀️
  • 예상에 비하여 일이 빨리 끝났어요.
      • [ye-sang-e bi-ha-yeo i-ri ppal-li kkeut-na-sseo-yo] — Compared to expectations, the work ended quickly. ⏱️
  • 다른 제품에 비해 이 제품은 가벼워요.
      • [da-reun je-pu-me bi-hae i je-pu-meun ga-byeo-wo-yo] — Compared to other products, this product is light. 📦
 

Pattern B: A에 비해 B는 ... 편이다

Use 편이다 when you want a softer judgment: on the ... side.
 
  • 서울에 비해 부산은 따뜻한 편이에요.
      • [seo-u-re bi-hae bu-sa-neun tta-tteu-tan pyeo-ni-e-yo] — Compared to Seoul, Busan is on the warm side.
  • 가격에 비해 양이 많은 편이에요.
      • [ga-gyeo-ge bi-hae yang-i ma-neun pyeo-ni-e-yo] — Compared to the price, the portion is on the large side. 🍜
 

Pattern C: A에 비하면 B는 아무것도 아니다

Use this when one thing feels small/weak in comparison.
 
  • 그때의 어려움에 비하면 지금 문제는 아무것도 아니에요.
      • [geu-ttae-ui eo-ryeo-u-me bi-ha-myeon ji-geum mun-je-neun a-mu-geot-do a-ni-e-yo] — Compared to the difficulties back then, today’s problem is nothing.

Unlike / differently from. Focuses on difference, not just comparison.

이와 반대로

In contrast to this / conversely. Used between larger statements.
  • 이와 반대로 올해는 매출이 늘었어요. — In contrast, sales increased this year.
 

-와/과 대조적이다

To be contrasting with / contrastive against. More analytical.
  • 도시의 분위기와 대조적이에요. — It contrasts with the city’s atmosphere.

Possible English translations:
  • “compared to...” → 작년에 비해 — compared to last year
  • “in comparison with...” → 다른 제품에 비하여 — in comparison with other products
  • “relative to...” → 가격에 비해 — relative to the price
  • “considering...” → 나이에 비해 — considering one’s age

  • ❌ Using -에 비하여 for simple “than” every time → ✅ Use 보다 for simpler comparisons.

  • 비해 already comes from 비하다; do not add 요 in the middle.
  • Use 에 비해, not usually 과 비해.
  • Use 과 비교하면 for explicit “compare with.”
  • 대비하다 can mean prepare for, so watch the meaning.
