🌈 The Big Picture

Use 보다 when you compare two things. It attaches to the comparison standard — the thing you are comparing against. Think of 보다 as the Korean “than” sticker. 🏷️

Compare:
  • 사과가 커요. [sa-gwa-ga keo-yo] = The apple is big. 🍎
  • 사과가 바나나보다 더 커요. [sa-gwa-ga ba-na-na-bo-da deo keo-yo] = The apple is bigger than the banana. 🍎🍌

Tiny map: 바나나보다 [ba-na-na-bo-da] = than the banana, and 더 커요 [deo keo-yo] = is bigger.

🎨 The Core “More Than” Family

Main pattern
  • A이/가 B보다 더 + 형용사 = A is more adjective than B

Very common forms
  • B보다 [B-bo-da] = than B
  • 더 + adjective [deo + adjective] = more adjective
  • A가 B보다 더 커요. [A-ga B-bo-da deo keo-yo] = A is bigger than B.

Useful comparison adjectives
  • 크다 [keu-da] = to be big 📏 → 더 커요 [deo keo-yo] = is bigger
  • 작다 [jak-tta] = to be small 🤏 → 더 작아요 [deo ja-ga-yo] = is smaller
  • 빠르다 [ppa-reu-da] = to be fast ⚡ → 더 빨라요 [deo ppal-la-yo] = is faster
  • 느리다 [neu-ri-da] = to be slow 🐢 → 더 느려요 [deo neu-ryeo-yo] = is slower
  • 비싸다 [bi-ssa-da] = to be expensive 💸 → 더 비싸요 [deo bi-ssa-yo] = is more expensive
  • 싸다 [ssa-da] = to be cheap 🪙 → 더 싸요 [deo ssa-yo] = is cheaper
  • 쉽다 [swip-tta] = to be easy 🙂 → 더 쉬워요 [deo swi-wo-yo] = is easier
  • 어렵다 [eo-ryeop-tta] = to be difficult 🧠 → 더 어려워요 [deo eo-ryeo-wo-yo] = is more difficult
  • 많다 [man-ta] = to be many / much 👥 → 더 많아요 [deo ma-na-yo] = are more

  • 버스 + 보다 → 버스보다 [beo-seu + bo-da → beo-seu-bo-da] = than a bus ✅
  • 어제 + 보다 → 어제보다 [eo-je + bo-da → eo-je-bo-da] = than yesterday ✅
  • 물 + 보다 → 물보다 [mul + bo-da → mul-bo-da] = than water ✅

Sentence map
  • A가 B보다 더 커요. = A is bigger than B.
  • A가 B보다 더 빨라요. = A is faster than B.
  • A가 B보다 더 비싸요. = A is more expensive than B.

🚨 Small Exception / Shape Notes

  • 보다 is attached directly to the comparison standard: 바나나보다, not 바나나 보다 for this grammar.
  • is common and clear, especially for beginners. In many natural sentences, can be omitted if the comparison is already obvious.
  • The described thing usually uses 이/가: 사과가, 기차가, 오늘이.
  • The comparison standard takes 보다: 바나나보다, 버스보다, 어제보다.

📚 Cross-check note

This lesson’s -보다 comparison pattern was cross-checked with 국립국어원 / korean.go.kr. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -보다 = than. Marks the comparison standard. ⚖️
  • = more. Makes the comparison clearer. ✨
  • 제일 / 가장 = the most. These are for superlatives, not simple “more than” comparisons. 🏆

Compare:
  • 사과가 바나나보다 더 커요. [sa-gwa-ga ba-na-na-bo-da deo keo-yo] = The apple is bigger than the banana. ⚖️
  • 사과가 제일 커요. [sa-gwa-ga je-il keo-yo] = The apple is the biggest. 🏆

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 사과보다 바나나가 더 커요 when you mean “the apple is bigger” → ✅ 사과가 바나나보다 더 커요 — put 보다 after the standard.
  • 기차가 버스 더 빨라요 → ✅ 기차가 버스보다 더 빨라요 — don’t forget 보다.
  • 오늘이 더 어제보다 추워요 → ✅ 오늘이 어제보다 더 추워요 — keep B보다 더 adjective together.
  • 바나나보다 사과가 더 커요 is not wrong, but for beginners, use the clearer order: ✅ 사과가 바나나보다 더 커요.

🎉 With -보다 and , you can compare sizes, prices, speed, difficulty, people, places, and even yesterday’s weather. Korean comparison see-saw unlocked. ⚖️✨
