These vowels are called complex vowels because each one combines a familiar vowel shape with . Visually, they look like a basic vowel with an extra vertical line added on the right.
All four are vertical vowels, so when they combine with a consonant, they sit to the right of that consonant. When they begin a syllable by themselves, they still need the silent placeholder.
