-(으)ㅁ에도 불구하고 is a formal “despite the fact that…” pattern. It turns the first clause into a formal written fact, then says the second clause happens in spite of that fact.
 
Structure:

  • 하다 [ha-da] — to do → 함에도 불구하고 [ha-me-do bul-gu-ha-go] — despite doing

3. Past fact + 았/었음에도 불구하고

Past facts use -았/었음에도 불구하고.

  • 완료되었다 → 완료되었음에도 불구하고 — despite the fact that it was completed
 

4. Noun + 임에도 불구하고

When the first part is a noun identity, use N임에도 불구하고.
  • 학생 [hak-saeng] — student → 학생임에도 불구하고 — despite being a student
  • 초보자 [cho-bo-ja] — beginner → 초보자임에도 불구하고 — despite being a beginner
  • 전문가 [jeon-mun-ga] — expert → 전문가임에도 불구하고 — despite being an expert
 

5. Plain noun + 에도 불구하고

If the first part is already a noun phrase like “weather,” “situation,” “warning,” or “difficulty,” use N에도 불구하고.
  • 추운 날씨에도 불구하고 — despite the cold weather
  • 어려운 상황에도 불구하고 — despite the difficult situation
  • 경고에도 불구하고 — despite the warning

Common practical shortcut

In many real sentences, a natural noun phrase is smoother than forcing a verb/adjective into -(으)ㅁ.
  • 날씨가 추움에도 불구하고 = grammatically possible/formal
  • 추운 날씨에도 불구하고 = often smoother: despite the cold weather
 
Both are useful. Use the -(으)ㅁ version when you want the first clause to sound like a formal “fact.”

🔍 Intermediate Nuance: Why This Sounds Formal

-(으)ㅁ에도 불구하고 contains -(으)ㅁ, which turns actions/states into formal written facts. That makes the whole expression sound objective and report-like.
 
Compare:
  • 비가 왔지만 행사는 계속됐어요.
      • [bi-ga wat-ji-man haeng-sa-neun gye-sok-dwae-sseo-yo] — It rained, but the event continued.
  • 비가 왔는데도 행사는 계속됐어요.
