TL;DR — 5 Words for This Lesson
- 시 — o'clock / hour marker (used for telling time)
- 분 — minute
- 초 — second
- 시간 — hour (duration) / time (in general)
- 반 — half (as in "half past")
Time words are some of the most useful vocabulary you'll ever learn — once you can say "두 시 반" (2:30) or "한 시간" (one hour), you can make plans, set alarms, and never be late again. Up next, we head to <mention-page url="https://app.notion.com/p/344be37590c0819670fd5439fa805a8"> to learn school-related vocabulary. Here's all 5 words together: "지금 한 시 반이에요. 회의까지 한 시간 남았으니까, 30분 안에 준비하고 10초도 늦지 마세요!" (It's 1:30 now. There's one hour left until the meeting, so get ready within 30 minutes and don't be even 10 seconds late!)
🎯 Big Picture
Korean time-telling uses two different number systems depending on what you're counting — and this trips up almost every learner at first. The hour (시) uses native Korean numbers (한, 두, 세...), while minutes, seconds, and hour-durations (분, 초, 시간) use Sino-Korean numbers (일, 이, 삼...). Add 반 (half) for the halfway point, and you have everything you need to read a clock, schedule an appointment, or talk about how long something takes.
📖 Core Vocabulary Family
1. 시 (o'clock)
The marker for a specific hour on the clock — always paired with native Korean numbers.
- 지금 몇 시예요? (What time is it now?)
- 세 시에 만나요. (Let's meet at 3 o'clock.)
Grammar note: 시 takes native Korean numbers — 한, 두, 세, 네, 다섯... + 시 (한 시, 두 시, 세 시).
2. 분 (minute)
The unit for minutes — always paired with Sino-Korean numbers.
- 지금 3시 10분이에요. (It's 3:10 now.)
- 5분만 기다려 주세요. (Please wait just 5 minutes.)
Grammar note: 분 takes Sino-Korean numbers — 일, 이, 삼, 사, 오... + 분 (일 분, 이 분, 삼 분).
3. 초 (second)
The smallest standard time unit — also paired with Sino-Korean numbers.
- 30초 안에 끝내세요. (Finish within 30 seconds.)
- 1초도 안 걸려요. (It doesn't even take a second.)
Grammar note: Like 분, 초 uses Sino-Korean numbers (일 초, 이 초, 삼십 초).
4. 시간 (hour / time)
A double-duty word — with a number it means "hours" (duration); without one it means "time" in general.
- 회의는 한 시간 걸려요. (The meeting takes one hour.)
- 시간이 없어요, 빨리 가요! (We don't have time, let's hurry!)
Grammar note: For duration, 시간 takes native Korean numbers + 시간 (한 시간, 두 시간) — note this matches 시's number system, unlike 분/초.
5. 반 (half)
Means "half" — most commonly used right after 시 to mean "thirty minutes past."
- 지금 두 시 반이에요. (It's 2:30 now.)
- 한 시간 반 동안 기다렸어요. (I waited for an hour and a half.)
Grammar note: 시 + 반 = "half past [hour]"; 시간 + 반 = "[duration] and a half."
🗣️ How They Work in a Sentence
- 지금 한 시 반이에요. 약속까지 30분 남았어요. (It's 1:30 now. There are 30 minutes left until the appointment.)
- 회의가 두 시간 걸렸는데, 5분 일찍 끝났어요. (The meeting took two hours, but it ended 5 minutes early.)
- 3시 15분에 출발하면 20분 만에 도착할 거예요. (If we leave at 3:15, we'll arrive in 20 minutes.)
🧱 General Formation Rule
- 시 (o'clock) always uses native Korean numbers: 한 시, 두 시, 세 시, 네 시... 열두 시.
- 분, 초, and 시간 (when counting duration) use Sino-Korean numbers: 일, 이, 삼, 사, 오, 육, 칠, 팔, 구, 십.
- To say a full time: [native number]+시 [Sino-Korean number]+분 — e.g., 3시 25분 = 세 시 이십오 분.
- 반 attaches directly after 시 for "half past": 두 시 반 = 2:30 (same as 두 시 삼십 분).
- For asking time: 지금 몇 시예요? (What time is it?) / 몇 시간 걸려요? (How many hours does it take?)
- For elapsed time: ~시간 후에 (~ hours later/from now), ~시간 전에 (~ hours ago).
Cross-check: 표준국어대사전 (korean.go.kr) defines 시 as a unit marking a point on the clock, 분/초 as subdivisions of an hour, 시간 as both "the unit of 60 minutes" and "time" as an abstract concept, and 반 as "half of something."
🔁 Synonym Alert
- 시간 vs. 시 — 시간 refers to duration or time in general ("how long" or "time" as a concept); 시 refers to a specific point on the clock ("o'clock"). "두 시간" = two hours; "두 시" = 2 o'clock.
- 반 vs. 30분 — Interchangeable after 시: "두 시 반" = "두 시 삼십 분" (both mean 2:30). But 반 can't stand alone as a general time unit the way 분 can.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- 시 uses native Korean numbers (한, 두, 세, 네, 다섯...), NOT Sino-Korean — "3시" is 세 시, never 삼 시.
- 분, 초, and duration-시간 use Sino-Korean numbers (일, 이, 삼, 사...) — "3분" is 삼 분, never 세 분.
- 시간 is a "double word": with a number it means "hours" (한 시간 = one hour); without a number it means "time" in general (시간이 없어요 = I don't have time).
- 반 only means "half past" when it follows 시 — it isn't a standalone clock-reading unit like 분 or 초.
- Don't mix up 시간 combinations: "한 시간 반" = 1.5 hours (duration), but "한 시 반" = 1:30 (clock time) — same 반, totally different meaning depending on what comes before it.
