TL;DR 🦄
  • 🤔 -(으)ㄴ/는다면 [-(eu)n/neun-da-myeon] means if / assuming that / suppose that...
  • 🧠 Compared with plain -(으)면, it sounds more hypothetical, imagined, thoughtful, or assumption-based.
  • ✨ Use it for dreams, “what if” questions, careful advice, imagined situations, and conditional reasoning: 시간이 있다면 여행을 가고 싶어요. — If I had time, I’d like to travel.

🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)ㄴ/는다면 is the “imagine this situation” version of “if.” It asks the listener to step into an assumption first, then think about the result.

Think of it like:
  • “If we assume A, then B.”
  • “Supposing that A is true, B.”
  • “If A were to happen, B.”
  • “If it were the case that A, B.”

Plain -(으)면 is more everyday and direct. -(으)ㄴ/는다면 is more reflective, hypothetical, or scenario-based.

Examples:
  • 한국에 간다면 어디에 가고 싶어요?
    • [han-gu-ge gan-da-myeon eo-di-e ga-go si-peo-yo] — If you went / were to go to Korea, where would you want to go? ✈️
한국 = Korea; 가다 = to go; 어디 = where.
  • 돈이 많다면 세계 여행을 하고 싶어요.
    • [do-ni man-ta-myeon se-gye yeo-haeng-eul ha-go si-peo-yo] — If I had a lot of money, I’d like to travel the world. 🌍
= money; 많다 = to be many/much; 세계 여행 = world travel.
  • 제가 선생님이라면 이렇게 설명할 거예요.
    • [je-ga seon-saeng-ni-mi-ra-myeon i-reo-ke seol-myeong-hal geo-ye-yo] — If I were the teacher, I would explain it this way. 🧑‍🏫
선생님 = teacher; 설명하다 = to explain.

The core feeling is not just “condition.” It is assumption. You are inviting someone into a possible world. 🧭

🎨 The Core -(으)ㄴ/는다면 Family

1. Action verb, vowel stem + ㄴ다면

Use this for present/future hypothetical actions when the verb stem ends in a vowel.
  • 가다 [ga-da] — to go → 간다면 [gan-da-myeon] — if someone goes / were to go
  • 보다 [bo-da] — to see/watch → 본다면 [bon-da-myeon] — if someone sees/watches
  • 만나다 [man-na-da] — to meet → 만난다면 [man-nan-da-myeon] — if someone meets
  • 공부하다 [gong-bu-ha-da] — to study → 공부한다면 [gong-bu-han-da-myeon] — if someone studies

2. Action verb, consonant stem + 는다면

Use this when the action verb stem ends in a consonant.
  • 먹다 [meok-da] — to eat → 먹는다면 [meong-neun-da-myeon] — if someone eats
  • 읽다 [ik-da] — to read → 읽는다면 [ing-neun-da-myeon] — if someone reads
  • 받다 [bat-da] — to receive → 받는다면 [ban-neun-da-myeon] — if someone receives

3. ㄹ-ending action verbs: drop ㄹ + ㄴ다면

  • 살다 [sal-da] — to live → 산다면 [san-da-myeon] — if someone lives
  • 만들다 [man-deul-da] — to make → 만든다면 [man-deun-da-myeon] — if someone makes
  • 열다 [yeol-da] — to open → 연다면 [yeon-da-myeon] — if someone opens

4. Descriptive verbs/adjectives + 다면

Do not use 는다면 with normal adjectives.
  • 좋다 [jo-ta] — to be good → 좋다면 [jo-ta-myeon] — if it is good
  • 바쁘다 [ba-ppeu-da] — to be busy → 바쁘다면 [ba-ppeu-da-myeon] — if someone is busy
  • 필요하다 [pi-ryo-ha-da] — to be necessary → 필요하다면 [pi-ryo-ha-da-myeon] — if necessary

5. 있다/없다 + 다면

For learner Korean, treat 있다 and 없다 like descriptive verbs here.
  • 시간이 있다면 — if there is time / if I have time
  • 돈이 없다면 — if there is no money / if someone has no money
  • 문제가 있다면 — if there is a problem

6. Noun + (이)라면

Use this for “if it is N / if someone is N.”
  • 학생 [hak-saeng] — student → 학생이라면 — if someone is a student
  • 친구 [chin-gu] — friend → 친구라면 — if someone is a friend
  • [na] — me → 나라면 — if it were me
  • [jeo] — me, humble → 저라면 — if it were me

🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence

  • 다시 태어난다면 음악가가 되고 싶어요.
    • [da-si tae-eo-nan-da-myeon eu-mak-ga-ga doe-go si-peo-yo] — If I were born again, I’d like to become a musician. 🎵
다시 = again; 태어나다 = to be born; 음악가 = musician.
  • 정말 힘들다면 잠깐 쉬어도 괜찮아요.
    • [jeong-mal him-deul-da-myeon jam-kkan swi-eo-do gwaen-cha-na-yo] — If it is really hard, it is okay to rest for a moment. 🌱
정말 = really; 힘들다 = to be hard/tiring; 잠깐 = for a moment.
  • 제가 당신이라면 조금 더 기다릴 거예요.
    • [je-ga dang-si-ni-ra-myeon jo-geum deo gi-da-ril geo-ye-yo] — If I were you, I would wait a little longer. ⏳
당신 = you; 기다리다 = to wait.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Present action verbs

  • vowel stem → ㄴ다면
    • 가다간다면
    • 오다온다면
    • 공부하다공부한다면
  • consonant stem → 는다면
    • 먹다먹는다면
    • 읽다읽는다면
    • 찾다찾는다면
  • ㄹ stem → drop ㄹ + ㄴ다면
    • 살다산다면
    • 만들다만든다면

Descriptive verbs/adjectives

Use stem + 다면.
  • 좋다좋다면
  • 바쁘다바쁘다면
  • 춥다춥다면
  • 가능하다가능하다면

Past assumptions

Use -았/었다면.
  • 갔다갔다면 — if someone went / had gone
  • 먹었다먹었다면 — if someone ate / had eaten
  • 알았다알았다면 — if someone knew / had known

Examples:
  • 그때 알았다면 다르게 행동했을 거예요.
    • [geu-ttae a-ra-tta-myeon da-reu-ge haeng-dong-hae-sseul geo-ye-yo] — If I had known then, I would have acted differently.
  • 비가 올 줄 알았다면 우산을 가져왔을 거예요.
    • [bi-ga ol jul a-ra-tta-myeon u-sa-neul ga-jyeo-wa-sseul geo-ye-yo] — If I had known it would rain, I would have brought an umbrella.

Nouns

Use N(이)라면.
  • consonant-ending noun → 이라면: 학생이라면
  • vowel-ending noun → 라면: 친구라면
  • negative noun identity → 아니라면: 사실이 아니라면 — if it is not true

🚨 Useful Chunks

만약 ... -다면 — if / suppose

만약 makes the hypothetical feeling clearer.
  • 만약 복권에 당첨된다면 뭘 할 거예요?
    • [ma-nyak bok-kkwo-ne dang-cheom-doen-da-myeon mwol hal geo-ye-yo] — If you won the lottery, what would you do? 🎟️
  • 만약 하루를 쉴 수 있다면 어디에 가고 싶어요?
    • [ma-nyak ha-ru-reul swil su it-da-myeon eo-di-e ga-go si-peo-yo] — If you could rest for one day, where would you want to go?

가능하다면 / 괜찮다면 / 필요하다면

These are practical, polite chunks.
  • 가능하다면 오늘 보내 주세요. — If possible, please send it today.
  • 괜찮다면 제가 먼저 말할게요. — If it is okay, I’ll speak first.
  • 필요하다면 다시 설명할게요. — If necessary, I’ll explain again.

나라면 / 저라면 — if it were me

  • 나라면 그렇게 안 할 거예요. — If it were me, I wouldn’t do that.
  • 저라면 조금 더 기다릴 것 같아요. — If it were me, I think I would wait a little longer.

...다고 한다면 — if someone says/claims that...

This fuller form makes the “if someone says/assumes that...” feeling explicit.
  • 친구가 온다고 한다면 음식을 더 준비해야 해요.
    • [chin-gu-ga on-da-go han-da-myeon eum-si-geul deo jun-bi-hae-ya hae-yo] — If my friend says they are coming, we need to prepare more food.

In many everyday sentences, this shortens naturally:
  • 친구가 온다면 음식을 더 준비해야 해요.
    • [chin-gu-ga on-da-myeon eum-si-geul deo jun-bi-hae-ya hae-yo] — If my friend is coming / says they’re coming, we need to prepare more food.

🔍 Intermediate Nuance: Assumption vs Simple Condition

Plain -(으)면 is often best for direct, likely, practical conditions.
  • 시간이 있으면 전화하세요.
    • [si-ga-ni i-sseu-myeon jeon-hwa-ha-se-yo] — If you have time, call me. 📞

-다면 sounds more like you are setting up an assumption or imagined case.
  • 시간이 있다면 여행을 가고 싶어요.
    • [si-ga-ni it-da-myeon yeo-haeng-eul ga-go si-peo-yo] — If I had time, I’d like to travel. 🌴

Compare:
  • 내일 비가 오면 우산을 가져가세요.
    • [nae-il bi-ga o-myeon u-sa-neul ga-jyeo-ga-se-yo] — If it rains tomorrow, take an umbrella. Practical advice.
  • 내일 비가 온다면 계획을 바꿔야 해요.
    • [nae-il bi-ga on-da-myeon gye-hoe-geul ba-kkwo-ya hae-yo] — If we assume it rains tomorrow, we need to change the plan. Scenario planning.

Both can sometimes be grammatically possible, but the tone changes. -(으)면 feels direct. -다면 feels more hypothetical or thoughtful. 🧠

🔍 -(으)ㄴ/는다면 vs Related Condition Grammar

  • 한국어를 잘하려면 매일 연습해야 해요. — If you want to be good at Korean, you need to practice every day.

-(으)ㄹ지라도

“Even if,” formal.
  • 어렵더라도 / 어려울지라도 포기하지 마세요. — Even if it is difficult, don’t give up.

아무리 -아/어도

“No matter how...”
  • 아무리 바빠도 밥은 먹어야 해요. — No matter how busy you are, you should eat.
