🌈 The Big Picture

All three particles add something to a set:
  • 도 = “also / too / even”
  • 조차 = “even,” especially something surprising, extreme, or unexpected
  • 마저 = “even / even the remaining one,” often the final added thing
Think of the emotional scale like this:
  • 도 = simple inclusion
  • 조차 = surprising inclusion
  • 마저 = final or emotionally heavy inclusion
Compare:
  • 친구도 왔어요. [chin-gu-do wa-sseo-yo] — My friend came too.
  • 친구조차 안 왔어요. [chin-gu-jo-cha an wa-sseo-yo] — Even my friend didn’t come.
  • 친구마저 안 왔어요. [chin-gu-ma-jeo an wa-sseo-yo] — Even my friend didn’t come / my friend too, as the final blow, didn’t come.

도 attaches after the word being included.
  • 저도 [jeo-do] — me too
  • 오늘도 [o-neul-do] — today too
  • 커피도 [keo-pi-do] — coffee too
  • 집에도 [ji-be-do] — at home too / also at home
Examples:
  • 저도 학생이에요. [jeo-do hak-saeng-i-e-yo] — I’m a student too.
  • 오늘도 비가 와요. [o-neul-do bi-ga wa-yo] — It’s raining today too.
  • 커피도 마셨어요. [keo-pi-do ma-syeo-sseo-yo] — I drank coffee too.
With negative sentences, 도 can mean “not either / not even”:
  • 저도 몰라요. [jeo-do mol-la-yo] — I don’t know either.
  • 물도 없어요. [mul-do eop-seo-yo] — There isn’t even water / there is no water either.
 

🎨 Core Pattern 2: 조차

조차 means “even,” usually when the included thing is surprising, minimal, or extreme.
Examples:
  • 이름조차 몰라요. [i-reum-jo-cha mol-la-yo] — I don’t even know the name.
  • 물조차 없어요. [mul-jo-cha eop-seo-yo] — There isn’t even water.
  • 생각조차 못 했어요. [saeng-gak-jo-cha mot hae-sseo-yo] — I couldn’t even think of it.
  • 기본 문법조차 어려워요. [gi-bon mun-beop-jo-cha eo-ryeo-wo-yo] — Even basic grammar is hard.
Feeling:
  • “Not even X”
  • “Even X, surprisingly”
  • “X should have been easy/obvious/basic, but even that…”
Because of that, 조차 often appears with negative or difficult situations.

마저 also means “even,” but it often feels like the last remaining thing is included too.
Examples:
  • 비마저 왔어요. [bi-ma-jeo wa-sseo-yo] — Even rain came / on top of everything, it rained.
  • 친구마저 떠났어요. [chin-gu-ma-jeo tteo-na-sseo-yo] — Even my friend left.
  • 희망마저 사라졌어요. [hui-mang-ma-jeo sa-ra-jyeo-sseo-yo] — Even hope disappeared.
  • 마지막 기회마저 놓쳤어요. [ma-ji-mak gi-hoe-ma-jeo no-chyeo-sseo-yo] — I even missed the last chance.
Feeling:
  • “Even X too, as the final one”
  • “On top of everything else, even X”
  • “Not just the others — even X”
It often carries a heavier emotional tone than 도.

  1. 저도 갈 거예요. [jeo-do gal geo-ye-yo] — I will go too. 🚶
      • 도 adds me to the group of people going.
  1. 저도 안 갈 거예요. [jeo-do an gal geo-ye-yo] — I won’t go either. 🚫
      • In a negative sentence, 도 often means “either.”
  1. 이름조차 기억이 안 나요. [i-reum-jo-cha gi-eo-gi an na-yo] — I can’t even remember the name. 🧠
      • 조차 makes “the name” feel like the most basic thing.
