🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)려고 하다 is the “I’m planning to…” grammar. It shows that the speaker has an intention or plan before doing an action. 🗓️
It often feels a little more planned than -고 싶다 (want to do). Compare:
  • 한국어를 공부하고 싶어요. [han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-ha-go si-peo-yo] (I want to study Korean.) 💭
  • 한국어를 공부하려고 해요. [han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-ha-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to study Korean.) 📚
Use it with action verbs: going, eating, reading, meeting, studying, calling, and so on. Do not use it directly with adjectives like 좋다 (to be good) or 춥다 (to be cold).

🎨 The Core Intentional Plan Family

Vowel stem + 려고 해요
  • 가다 [ga-da] (to go) → 가려고 해요 [ga-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to go)
  • 보다 [bo-da] (to see/watch) → 보려고 해요 [bo-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to see/watch)
  • 마시다 [ma-si-da] (to drink) → 마시려고 해요 [ma-si-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to drink)
Consonant stem + 으려고 해요
  • 먹다 [meok-da] (to eat) → 먹으려고 해요 [meo-geu-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to eat)
  • 읽다 [ik-da] (to read) → 읽으려고 해요 [il-geu-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to read)
  • 찾다 [chat-da] (to look for/find) → 찾으려고 해요 [cha-jeu-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to look for/find)
ㄹ stem + 려고 해요
  • 만들다 [man-deul-da] (to make) → 만들려고 해요 [man-deul-lyeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to make)
  • 놀다 [nol-da] (to play) → 놀려고 해요 [nol-lyeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to play)
  • 살다 [sal-da] (to live) → 살려고 해요 [sal-lyeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to live)
Special common form
  • 하다 [ha-da] (to do) → 하려고 해요 [ha-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to do)
  • ❌ 할려고 해요 → ✅ 하려고 해요

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

  • 저는 오늘 집에서 쉬려고 해요. [jeo-neun o-neul ji-be-seo swi-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to rest at home today.) 🛋️
    • 저 = I/me, 오늘 = today, 집 = home/house, 에서 = at/in.
  • 저는 저녁에 친구를 만나려고 해요. [jeo-neun jeo-nyeo-ge chin-gu-reul man-na-ryeo-go hae-yo] (I’m planning to meet a friend in the evening.) 🤝
    • 저녁 = evening, 친구 = friend, 만나다 = to meet.
  • 동생이 주말에 케이크를 만들려고 해요. [dong-saeng-i ju-ma-re ke-i-keu-reul man-deul-lyeo-go hae-yo] (My younger sibling is planning to make a cake on the weekend.) 🍰
    • 동생 = younger sibling, 주말 = weekend, 케이크 = cake, 만들다 = to make.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Vowel stem
  • Remove 다 → add 려고 해요
    • 가다 → 가려고 해요
    • 보다 → 보려고 해요
    • 마시다 → 마시려고 해요
    • 쉬다 → 쉬려고 해요
Consonant stem
  • Remove 다 → add 으려고 해요
    • 먹다 → 먹으려고 해요
    • 읽다 → 읽으려고 해요
    • 찾다 → 찾으려고 해요
    • 입다 → 입으려고 해요
ㄹ stem
  • Keep ㄹ → add 려고 해요
    • 만들다 → 만들려고 해요
    • 놀다 → 놀려고 해요
    • 살다 → 살려고 해요
Usage note
  • -(으)려고 하다 works with a subject that can have intention: 저는 (I), 친구가 (a friend), 동생이 (younger sibling).
  • It does not naturally go with weather or things that cannot intend: ❌ 비가 오려고 해요 for “It is going to rain” in this beginner plan meaning. Use other patterns for signs or forecasts later.

📚 Cross-check note

The meaning of -(으)려고 하다 as intention/plan, the standard spelling 하려고 rather than 할려고, and the 만들다 → 만들려고 form were cross-checked against korean.go.kr. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -(으)려고 하다 [-(eu)ryeo-go ha-da] → to plan/intend to do; everyday plan 🗓️
  • -고 싶다 [-go sip-da] → to want to do; desire, not necessarily a plan 💭
  • -(으)ㄹ 거예요 [-(eu)l geo-ye-yo] → will / going to; future statement, not always intentional 🚗

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ 할려고 해요 → ✅ 하려고 해요 (Standard form is 하려고.) ✍️
  • ❌ 먹려고 해요 → ✅ 먹으려고 해요 (Most consonant stems need 으려고.) 🍚
  • ❌ 만드려고 해요 → ✅ 만들려고 해요 (ㄹ stem keeps ㄹ here.) 🛠️
  • ❌ 좋으려고 해요 → ✅ 좋아지려고 해요 (Use an action/change verb, not a plain adjective.) 🌱
  • ❌ 비가 오려고 해요 → ✅ save weather “looks like it will…” for a later pattern; this lesson is for intentional plans. 🌧️

Now you can say the plan before the action: 가려고 해요, 먹으려고 해요, 만들려고 해요. Tiny planner, big Korean energy. 🗓️✨
