TL;DR 🦄
- 🎯 (으)러 가다 / 오다 means go / come in order to do something.
- 🧱 Use 으러 after consonant-ending action stems: 먹다 → 먹으러.
- ☀️ Use 러 after vowel-ending action stems: 보다 → 보러.
- 🚶 This pattern needs movement: usually 가다 or 오다.
🎧 Iru Helper Note — Open Korean Helper Widgets and listen to 먹으러 가요, 보러 와요, and 공부하러 가요. The sentence should feel like: “do-purpose + go/come.” 👟
🌈 The Big Picture
The grammar (으)러 가다 / 오다 explains the purpose of going or coming.
The first verb tells the purpose:
- 먹으러 = in order to eat
- 보러 = in order to see/watch
- 공부하러 = in order to study
Then 가다 or 오다 tells the movement:
- 밥을 먹으러 가요. = I go to eat rice. 🍚
- 친구를 보러 와요. = I come to see a friend. 🧑🤝🧑
- 학교에 공부하러 가요. = I go to school to study. 🏫
🧩 Core Pattern
Start with the dictionary form, remove 다, then choose 으러 or 러.
- 먹다 = to eat → 먹 + 으러 → 먹으러 = in order to eat
- 읽다 = to read → 읽 + 으러 → 읽으러 = in order to read
- 듣다 = to listen → 들 + 으러 → 들으러 = in order to listen
- 걷다 = to walk → 걸 + 으러 → 걸으러 = in order to walk
- 묻다 = to ask → 물 + 으러 → 물으러 = in order to ask
- 싣다 = to load/carry → 실 + 으러 → 실으러 = in order to load/carry
- 보다 = to see/watch → 보 + 러 → 보러 = in order to see/watch
- 마시다 = to drink → 마시 + 러 → 마시러 = in order to drink
- 공부하다 = to study → 공부하 + 러 → 공부하러 = in order to study
- 일하다 = to work → 일하 + 러 → 일하러 = in order to work
- 쉬다 = to rest → 쉬 + 러 → 쉬러 = in order to rest
- 만나다 = to meet → 만나 + 러 → 만나러 = in order to meet
🛠️ How to Build Purpose Sentences
Use this sentence shape:
학교에 공부하러 가요. / 집에 쉬러 와요.
Examples:
- 학교에 공부하러 가요. = I go to school to study. 🏫
- 집에 쉬러 와요. = I come home to rest. 🏠
- 카페에 커피를 마시러 가요. = I go to a cafe to drink coffee. ☕
- 친구를 만나러 와요. = I come to meet a friend. 👋
🔍 으러 vs 러
Use the final sound of the action stem as your guide.
Often use 으러 after consonant stems:
- 먹다 = to eat → 먹으러 = in order to eat
- 읽다 = to read → 읽으러 = in order to read
- 듣다 = to listen → 들으러 = in order to listen
Often use 러 after vowel stems:
- 보다 = to see/watch → 보러 = in order to see/watch
- 마시다 = to drink → 마시러 = in order to drink
- 공부하다 = to study → 공부하러 = in order to study
- 일하다 = to work → 일하러 = in order to work
- 쉬다 = to rest → 쉬러 = in order to rest
- 만나다 = to meet → 만나러 = in order to meet
🧭 Useful Extra: Place + 에
This pattern often uses a place with 에, because someone is moving to that place for a purpose.
- 학교에 공부하러 가요. = I go to school to study.
- 집에 쉬러 와요. = I come home to rest.
- 카페에 커피를 마시러 가요. = I go to a cafe to drink coffee.
The place answers where the movement is going, and (으)러 answers why.
🚫 Remember!
Use (으)러 가다 / 오다 with action verbs only.
Use it for actions:
- 먹으러 가요. = I go to eat.
- 공부하러 가요. = I go to study.
- 친구를 만나러 와요. = I come to meet a friend.
Avoid using it with adjectives:
- ❌ 좋으러 가요. = awkward attempt at “go in order to be good”
- ❌ 작으러 와요. = awkward attempt at “come in order to be small”
Also remember: this pattern needs movement. The ending should usually be 가요 or 와요 here.
🚨 ㄷ-Irregular Note: 듣다 is not alone
듣다 is not special because of (으)러 itself. It is special because it is a ㄷ-irregular verb: before a vowel-starting ending like 으러, the final ㄷ changes to ㄹ.
Common ㄷ-irregular verbs to know:
- 듣다 → 들으러 = to listen → in order to listen 🎧
- 걷다 → 걸으러 = to walk → in order to walk 🚶
- 묻다 (to ask) → 물으러 = to ask → in order to ask ❓
- 싣다 → 실으러 = to load/carry → in order to load/carry 📦
Less common or more advanced ㄷ-irregular verbs follow the same ㄷ → ㄹ pattern before vowel-starting endings:
- 깨닫다 = to realize → 깨달으러 = in order to realize
- 붇다 = to swell/soak up liquid → 불으러 = in order to swell/soak up liquid
- 긷다 = to draw water → 길으러 = in order to draw water
But not every verb ending in ㄷ is irregular. Use regular examples only when they make natural purpose sentences:
- 닫다 = to close → 문을 닫으러 가요. = I go to close the door.
- 받다 = to receive → 선물을 받으러 가요. = I go to receive a gift.
Some regular ㄷ verbs may be grammatically formable but awkward as purpose sentences. Avoid unnatural practice sentences like “I go to believe.” Use examples that make real-world sense.
For this lesson’s practice, focus on natural purpose-and-movement sentences like 음악을 들으러 가요 = I go to listen to music, 걸으러 가요 = I go to walk, and 물으러 가요 = I go to ask.
📚 Cross-check note
The purpose pattern (으)러 가다 / 오다 and the beginner forms in this lesson were checked against Korean grammar references from korean.go.kr. ✅
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ 먹러 가요 → ✅ 먹으러 가요 = I go to eat. — Consonant stem needs 으러.
- ❌ 보으러 가요 → ✅ 보러 가요 = I go to watch/see. — Vowel stem uses 러.
- ❌ 먹어요러 가요 → ✅ 먹으러 가요 = I go to eat. — Attach to the stem, not 요.
- ❌ 먹으러 먹어요 → ✅ 먹으러 가요 / 와요 = I go/come to eat. — This pattern needs movement.
- ❌ 듣으러 가요 → ✅ 들으러 가요 = I go to listen. — 듣다 is ㄷ-irregular.
- ❌ 걷으러 가요 → ✅ 걸으러 가요 = I go to walk. — 걷다 is also ㄷ-irregular.
- ❌ 문을 닫러 가요 → ✅ 문을 닫으러 가요 = I go to close the door. — 닫다 is regular, so the ㄷ stays and the stem takes 으러.
