TL;DR 🦄
- 🧭 -(으)ㄹ 터이다 [-(eu)l teo-i-da] is a formal / written grammar for intention, expectation, or guess.
- 🗣️ In normal daily speech, people usually do not say -(으)ㄹ 터예요. It sounds stiff, old-fashioned, dramatic, or textbook-like.
- ✅ For real conversation, use -(으)ㄹ 거예요, -(으)ㄹ게요, -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요, -(으)ㄹ 테니까, and -(으)ㄹ 텐데.
🎧 Iru Helper Note Use Korean Helper Widgets to hear the difference between stiff textbook speech and natural daily speech. Try 제가 확인할게요 [je-ga hwa-gin-hal-ge-yo], 오늘 쉴 거예요 [o-neul swil geo-ye-yo], 곧 도착할 것 같아요 [got do-cha-kal geot ga-ta-yo], and 피곤할 텐데 쉬세요 [pi-gon-hal ten-de swi-se-yo].
Reality Check — very important
-(으)ㄹ 터예요 is grammatically connected to -(으)ㄹ 터이다, but it is not a common everyday spoken ending. If you say 제가 전화할 터예요 in normal conversation, it can sound unnatural.
Use these instead:
- 제가 전화할게요. [je-ga jeon-hwa-hal-ge-yo] (I’ll call.) ✅ most natural when offering
- 제가 전화할 거예요. [je-ga jeon-hwa-hal geo-ye-yo] (I’m going to call.) ✅ plain future
- 버스가 곧 도착할 것 같아요. [beo-seu-ga got do-cha-kal geot ga-ta-yo] (I think the bus will arrive soon.) ✅ natural guess
- 길이 막힐 테니까 일찍 출발하세요. [gi-ri ma-kil te-ni-kka il-jjik chul-bal-ha-se-yo] (The road will probably be jammed, so leave early.) ✅ useful contraction
- 피곤할 텐데 쉬세요. [pi-gon-hal ten-de swi-se-yo] (You’re probably tired, so rest.) ✅ useful contraction
🌈 The Big Picture
-(으)ㄹ 터이다 is built from the future-looking modifier -(으)ㄹ plus the dependent noun 터. The noun 터 points to an expected situation, plan, or circumstance. Korean.go.kr explains 터 after -(으)ㄹ as expressing 예정 (schedule/plan), 추측 (guess), or 의지 (will/intention). 🧩
But here is the practical learner truth:
1. Full form: -(으)ㄹ 터이다
- Formal, written, literary, or explanatory.
- You may see it in writing, grammar books, speeches, or formal explanations.
- Example: 그는 곧 떠날 터이다. [geu-neun got tteo-nal teo-i-da] (They are likely/intended to leave soon.) 📜
2. Polite final form: -(으)ㄹ 터예요
- Grammatically possible, but not usually used in daily conversation.
- It sounds stiff or “grammar-book Korean.”
- Instead of 제가 확인할 터예요, say 제가 확인할게요 or 제가 확인할 거예요. ✅
3. Contracted speech forms: -(으)ㄹ 테니까, -(으)ㄹ 텐데
- These are actually useful and common.
- 테니까 comes from 터이니까.
- 텐데 comes from 터인데.
- These are the forms you will hear and use much more often.
🗣️ What People Actually Say
When you mean “I’ll do it”
Use -(으)ㄹ게요 when you are offering, volunteering, or responding to someone.
- Stiff: 제가 확인할 터예요. [je-ga hwa-gin-hal teo-ye-yo]
- Natural: 제가 확인할게요. [je-ga hwa-gin-hal-ge-yo] (I’ll check.) ✅
- Natural: 제가 전화할게요. [je-ga jeon-hwa-hal-ge-yo] (I’ll call.) ✅
- Natural: 제가 보낼게요. [je-ga bo-nael-ge-yo] (I’ll send it.) ✅
When you mean “I’m going to / I will”
Use -(으)ㄹ 거예요 for a plain future plan.
- Stiff: 저는 내일 갈 터예요. [jeo-neun nae-il gal teo-ye-yo]
- Natural: 저는 내일 갈 거예요. [jeo-neun nae-il gal geo-ye-yo] (I’m going tomorrow.) ✅
- Natural: 오늘 집에서 쉴 거예요. [o-neul ji-be-seo swil geo-ye-yo] (I’ll rest at home today.) ✅
When you mean “probably / I think”
Use -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요, -겠어요, or sometimes -(으)ㄹ 거예요, depending on the situation.
- Stiff: 버스가 곧 도착할 터예요. [beo-seu-ga got do-cha-kal teo-ye-yo]
- Natural: 버스가 곧 도착할 것 같아요. [beo-seu-ga got do-cha-kal geot ga-ta-yo] (I think the bus will arrive soon.) ✅
- Natural: 택배가 오후에 올 것 같아요. [taek-bae-ga o-hu-e ol geot ga-ta-yo] (I think the package will come in the afternoon.) ✅
- Natural: 길이 많이 막히겠어요. [gi-ri ma-ni ma-ki-ge-sseo-yo] (The road will probably be really jammed.) ✅
When 터 becomes very useful in speech
Use the contractions:
- -(으)ㄹ 테니까 = since I will / since it will probably…
- -(으)ㄹ 텐데 = it will probably be… so/but…
Daily-life examples:
- 제가 확인할 테니까 기다려 주세요. [je-ga hwa-gin-hal te-ni-kka gi-da-ryeo ju-se-yo] (I’ll check, so please wait.) ⏳
- 비가 올 테니까 우산을 챙기세요. [bi-ga ol te-ni-kka u-sa-neul chaeng-gi-se-yo] (It’ll probably rain, so bring an umbrella.) ☔
- 사람이 많을 텐데 일찍 가요. [sa-ra-mi ma-neul ten-de il-jjik ga-yo] (There will probably be many people, so let’s go early.) 👥
- 피곤할 텐데 오늘은 쉬세요. [pi-gon-hal ten-de o-neu-reun swi-se-yo] (You’re probably tired, so rest today.) 🛋️

📚 Cross-check note
This lesson was checked against korean.go.kr: 터 is a dependent noun used after -(으)ㄹ to express 예정 (schedule/plan), 추측 (guess), or 의지 (will/intention). Korean.go.kr also explains that 테야 is a contraction of 터이야, and 텐데 comes from 터인데. ✅
Practical lesson choice: treat -(으)ㄹ 터이다 as recognition/formal grammar, and use -(으)ㄹ 거예요, -(으)ㄹ게요, -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요, -(으)ㄹ 테니까, and -(으)ㄹ 텐데 for daily speech.
🪞 Synonym & Usage Alert
- -(으)ㄹ 터이다 [-(eu)l teo-i-da] → formal/written “will / intend / is likely” 📜
- -(으)ㄹ 터예요 [-(eu)l teo-ye-yo] → grammatical but stiff; not common daily speech ⚠️
- -(으)ㄹ 거예요 [-(eu)l geo-ye-yo] → common plain future 🔮
- -(으)ㄹ게요 [-(eu)l-ge-yo] → “I’ll do it” when responding/offering ✅
- -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 [-(eu)l geot ga-ta-yo] → “I think it will / probably” 💭
- -(으)ㄹ 테니까 [-(eu)l te-ni-kka] → “since I will / since it will probably…” before advice or requests 🧩
- -(으)ㄹ 텐데 [-(eu)l ten-de] → “it will probably be…, so/but…” 🌦️
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ Using 제가 확인할 터예요 as your default “I’ll check.” → ✅ Say 제가 확인할게요 or 제가 확인할 거예요. 🗣️
- ❌ Using 버스가 도착할 터예요 as your default “The bus will probably arrive.” → ✅ Say 버스가 도착할 것 같아요. 🚌
- ❌ Thinking 테니까 and 텐데 are rare because 터예요 is rare. → ✅ 테니까 and 텐데 are common and useful. ✅
- ❌ 읽ㄹ 텐데 → ✅ 읽을 텐데 (Consonant stem needs 을.) 📖
- ❌ 만들을 테니까 → ✅ 만들 테니까 (ㄹ stem keeps ㄹ; do not add 을.) 🛠️
Bottom line: learn -(으)ㄹ 터이다 so you recognize the grammar, but speak naturally with 갈 거예요, 갈게요, 갈 것 같아요, 갈 테니까, and 갈 텐데. That is the daily-life Korean you actually need. 🧭✨
