TOPIK Listening
TL;DR
  • Efficient listening memos are not full sentences; they are quick notes for who / what / when / where / why / result.
  • In TOPIK listening, write only keywords, numbers, contrast words, and final decisions.
  • Use the 2-pass method: answer first, then confirm with keywords and discourse markers.
🎧
🎧 Audio Practice
Use the scripts in the Practice Hub as TTS audio. First, listen without looking and take short memos. Second, listen again while checking whether your memos captured names, numbers, reasons, and final actions. Optional: shadow one short sentence from each track to improve speed and chunk recognition.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK listening passages move quickly. If you try to write every sentence, you will miss the next clue. Efficient memos help you keep only the information that usually becomes an answer choice: topic, purpose, problem, reason, speaker attitude, date/time, place, price, and final decision.
A good memo is short, messy, and useful. It should help you choose an answer, not become a perfect transcript.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Memo by question type

  • Main idea: write the repeated topic and final summary.
  • Detail: write numbers, time, place, people, and objects.
  • Reason / cause: catch markers like 왜냐하면, -기 때문에, 그래서, 그래서요, 바람에.
  • Contrast / correction: catch 그런데, 하지만, 아니요, 사실은, 대신, 말고.
  • Final decision: catch 그러면, 그럼, 결국, 그래서 저는, -기로 했어요.

2. Use symbols instead of full Korean sentences

Meaning
Fast memo symbol
Example
Reason
→ / because
비 → 연기
Contrast
but / X
토 X, 일 가능
Important number
circle or underline
3시, 15,000원
Final action
결론 / do
결론: 환불 신청

3. Make your memo answer-choice friendly

Instead of:
  • The woman says that the library card can be made on the first floor after showing a student ID.
Write:
  • 도서관 카드 / 1층 / 학생증 필요
This is enough to answer most TOPIK-style detail questions.

✅ Exam Strategy

The 2-pass method

  1. First pass: answer without pausing. Write only keywords. Do not panic if you miss one sentence.
  1. Second pass: confirm. Listen for discourse markers, changed details, and final decisions.
  1. Optional dictation/shadowing: replay one confusing line and repeat it aloud. This fixes speed problems and helps you recognize chunks next time.

What to write first

  • Nouns: 장소, 사람, 물건, 문제
  • Numbers: dates, times, prices, percentages, room numbers
  • Connectors: 그런데, 그래서, 대신, 결국
  • Verbs of action: 신청하다, 취소하다, 예약하다, 바꾸다, 제출하다

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Writing too much: full sentences steal attention from the next clue.
  • Ignoring correction words: answer choices often test a changed detail after 아니요 or 그런데.
  • Trusting the first number: the final number may change.
  • Missing the last sentence: many TOPIK dialogues reveal the final decision at the end.
  • Writing only Korean when speed is low: abbreviations, symbols, and your first language are fine if they help you answer.

🧪 Memo Template

Use this quick template while listening:
Topic: Who: Problem: Key details: Reason/contrast: Final action:
For very short questions, reduce it to:
topic / number / reason / final

✅ Final Review Checklist

  • Can you take notes in keywords rather than full sentences?
  • Did you catch changed details after 그런데 / 하지만 / 다만?
  • Did you record numbers with labels, such as 6만 수강료 and 4만 재료비?
  • Did your final memo help you choose the answer without replaying the whole track?
💡
TL;DR
  • Good listening memos are short: write keywords, numbers, arrows, and symbols, not full sentences.
  • Memo only what helps answer: topic, change, reason, next action, number, speaker attitude.
  • Use a fixed shorthand system so memo-taking does not steal attention from listening.
🎧
🎧 Audio Practice
Use the 2-pass method. First pass: listen and write only 3–5 keywords. Second pass: replay and improve the memo with one number, reason, or next action. Optional: compare your memo to the model answers and remove unnecessary words.

🔑 The Big Picture

In TOPIK listening, especially longer dialogues and lectures, you may forget details if you try to hold everything in memory. Efficient memos help you catch structure without writing too much.
Bad memo:
  • “The woman called the man because she cannot meet at three o’clock tomorrow and wants to meet at five.”
Good memo:
  • 약속 3→5 / 여자 일 있음 / 내일

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

Memo symbols

  • change or result
  • X no / cannot / canceled
  • ? question or uncertainty
  • + add / include
  • confirmed / correct
  • ! important

What to memo

  • Topic: 회의, 시험, 여행, 약속
  • Number: 3시, 2층, 15분, 2만 원
  • Change: 3→4, 월→화
  • Reason: 비, 아픔, 일 있음
  • Next action: 전화, 제출, 확인, 방문

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Before audio, read answer choices and predict memo slots.
  1. During audio, write nouns and numbers only.
  1. Use arrows for changes.
  1. Circle the final decision.
  1. After audio, choose the answer from the memo, not from vague memory.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Do not write full Korean sentences.
  • Do not memo every word.
  • Do not stop listening while writing.
  • Do not forget corrections; final corrected info is usually the answer.

✅ Final Review

Efficient memos should make the answer easier, not distract you. Write short chunks, numbers, and arrows. Your goal is to capture the structure of the audio, not to transcribe it.
