TL;DR 🦄
  • 📦 Use -는 것 [-neun geot] to turn an action into a noun-like “thing/fact”: 공부하는 것 [gong-bu-ha-neun geot] = “studying / the fact of studying.”
  • 🧩 Attach -는 to an action verb stem, then add : 먹다 [meok-da] “to eat” → 먹는 것 [meong-neun geot] “eating.”
  • 🗣️ In everyday speech, often becomes : 먹는 것먹는 거 [meong-neun geo].

🌈 The Big Picture

Korean often turns an action into a “thing” so the whole action can become the subject, object, or topic of a sentence. English often uses “-ing” or “the fact that…” for this.
  • “studying Korean”
  • “the fact that I study Korean”
  • “watching movies”
  • “what I’m doing”
In Korean, one very common conversational way to do this is -는 것. 📦
  • 한국어를 공부해요. [han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-hae-yo] — I study Korean. 🇰🇷
  • 한국어를 공부하는 것 [han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-ha-neun geot] — studying Korean / the fact of studying Korean. 🇰🇷
  • 한국어를 공부하는 것은 중요해요. [han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-ha-neun geo-seun jung-yo-hae-yo] — Studying Korean is important. 📝
The word means “thing,” but in grammar it often acts like a placeholder noun: “the thing/action/fact that…” 🧺

🎨 The Core -는 것 Family

The core pattern for action verbs is:
  • 동사 어간 + 는 것 — action verb stem + 는 것 = “doing…” / “the fact that someone does…”
Examples:
  • 가다 [ga-da] “to go” → 가는 것 [ga-neun geot] — going 🚶
  • 먹다 [meok-da] “to eat” → 먹는 것 [meong-neun geot] — eating 🍚
  • 읽다 [ik-da] “to read” → 읽는 것 [ing-neun geot] — reading 📖
  • 공부하다 [gong-bu-ha-da] “to study” → 공부하는 것 [gong-bu-ha-neun geot] — studying 📝
Common frames:
  • -는 것이 좋아요 [-neun geo-shi jo-a-yo] — doing it is good.
  • -는 것은 중요해요 [-neun geo-seun jung-yo-hae-yo] — doing it is important.
  • -는 것을 좋아해요 [-neun geo-seul jo-a-hae-yo] — I like doing it.
  • -는 것을 알아요 [-neun geo-seul a-ra-yo] — I know that someone does it.
Spoken shortcut:
  • often becomes : 공부하는 것공부하는 거 [gong-bu-ha-neun geo].

🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence

  1. 매일 걷는 것은 좋아요. [mae-il geon-neun geo-seun jo-a-yo] — Walking every day is good. 🚶
      • 매일 = every day, 걷다 = to walk, = thing/fact, 좋다 = to be good.
  1. 저는 책 읽는 것을 좋아해요. [jeo-neun chaek ing-neun geo-seul jo-a-hae-yo] — I like reading books. 📚
      • = I/me, = book, 읽다 = to read, 좋아하다 = to like.
  1. 민수가 한국어를 공부하는 것을 알아요. [min-su-ga han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-ha-neun geo-seul a-ra-yo] — I know that Minsu studies Korean. 🇰🇷
      • 민수 = Minsu, 한국어 = Korean language, 공부하다 = to study, 알다 = to know.

🧩 General Formation Rule

For action verbs, remove from the dictionary form, then add 는 것.
  • 보다 [bo-da] “to watch/see” → 보는 것 [bo-neun geot] — watching/seeing 🎬
  • 마시다 [ma-shi-da] “to drink” → 마시는 것 [ma-shi-neun geot] — drinking 🥤
  • 만나다 [man-na-da] “to meet” → 만나는 것 [man-na-neun geot] — meeting 👋
  • 기다리다 [gi-da-ri-da] “to wait” → 기다리는 것 [gi-da-ri-neun geot] — waiting ⏳
  • 요리하다 [yo-ri-ha-da] “to cook” → 요리하는 것 [yo-ri-ha-neun geot] — cooking 🍳
A few stem notes:
  • ㄹ stems drop ㄹ before : 만들다만드는 것, not 만들는 것. 🧱
  • Some ㄷ-irregular verbs change before vowel-starting endings, but starts with ㄴ, so keep the stem: 듣다듣는 것, 걷다걷는 것. 🎧🚶

📚 Cross-check note

The -는 것 structure was checked against korean.go.kr: is a dependent noun that is modified by a preceding adnominal form such as -는. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -는 것 [-neun geot] — conversational and flexible; often means “doing…” or “the fact that…”
  • -는 거 [-neun geo] — spoken version of -는 것; very common in daily speech.
  • -기 [-gi] — another action-noun form; often more compact, abstract, or set-expression-like.
Quick contrast:
  • 책 읽기 [chaek il-gi] — reading books, as an activity 📚
  • 책 읽는 것 [chaek ing-neun geot] — the act/fact of reading books 📚
Both can be correct; -는 것 often feels more conversational and “whole-action” focused.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 먹다 것 → ✅ 먹는 것. Use the modifier before . 🍚
  • 만들는 것 → ✅ 만드는 것. ㄹ drops before . 🧱
  • 읽은 것 for “reading” → ✅ 읽는 것. 읽은 것 means “the thing that was read / what someone read.” 📖
  • ❌ Treating as a different grammar pattern → ✅ is the common spoken form of . 🗣️
  • ❌ Forgetting particles after → ✅ Add what the sentence needs: 것이, 것은, 것을. 🎒

🎉 You can now turn an action into a “fact/thing” and move it around the sentence like a noun. Grammar basket acquired. 🧺✨
