Essential Vocabulary Review (1-25)
"> to review everything you've learned in your first 25 words!
Example: μ €λŠ” 맀일 κ±Έμ–΄μ„œ 학ꡐ에 κ°€μš”. μΉœκ΅¬λŠ” λ²„μŠ€λ‘œ μ™€μ„œ 9μ‹œμ— λ„μ°©ν•΄μš”. μ €λŠ” μˆ˜μ—…μ΄ λλ‚˜λ©΄ λ°”λ‘œ λ– λ‚˜μš”. (I walk to school every day. My friend comes by bus and arrives at 9. I leave right after class ends.)

🎯 Big Picture

Korean has a small set of core movement verbs that show up constantly β€” in directions, travel plans, daily routines, and casual chats about who's where. The trick isn't just learning the words; it's learning which conjugations are "shortcuts." Several of today's words (κ°€λ‹€, μ˜€λ‹€) involve vowel contractions that make the polite form shorter than you'd expect, and κ±·λ‹€ belongs to a whole family of "γ„·-irregular" verbs that change their final consonant before a vowel. Once these patterns click, you'll conjugate dozens of related verbs (λ“€μ–΄κ°€λ‹€, λ‚˜κ°€λ‹€, λŒμ•„μ˜€λ‹€, and more) the exact same way.

πŸ“– Core Vocabulary Family

1. κ°€λ‹€ (to go)

The most basic verb of movement β€” used with the destination particle 에.
  • μ €λŠ” 학ꡐ에 κ°€μš”. (I go to school.)
  • 내일 뢀산에 갈 κ±°μ˜ˆμš”. (I will go to Busan tomorrow.)
Grammar note: κ°€λ‹€'s stem ends in ㅏ, which is the same vowel as the μ•„μš” ending β€” so they merge into one syllable: κ°€ + μ•„μš” β†’ κ°€μš” (NOT κ°€μ•„μš”).

2. μ˜€λ‹€ (to come)

Describes movement toward the speaker or a shared reference point ("here").
  • μΉœκ΅¬κ°€ 우리 집에 μ™€μš”. (My friend comes to my house.)
  • λ²„μŠ€κ°€ 곧 올 κ±°μ˜ˆμš”. (The bus will come soon.)
Grammar note: μ˜€λ‹€ + μ•„μš” contracts: 였 + μ•„ β†’ 와, giving μ™€μš” (NOT μ˜€μ•„μš”).

3. λ„μ°©ν•˜λ‹€ (to arrive)

A ν•˜λ‹€ verb describing the moment of reaching a destination β€” often used with 에 for the place.
  • κΈ°μ°¨κ°€ 역에 λ„μ°©ν•΄μš”. (The train arrives at the station.)
  • μ €λŠ” 9μ‹œμ— νšŒμ‚¬μ— λ„μ°©ν–ˆμ–΄μš”. (I arrived at the office at 9.)
Grammar note: regular ν•˜λ‹€ conjugation β€” ν•˜λ‹€ β†’ ν•΄μš”, ν–ˆμ–΄μš”, ν•  κ±°μ˜ˆμš”.

4. λ– λ‚˜λ‹€ (to leave / to depart)

Emphasizes leaving a place behind β€” often used for trips, departures, and goodbyes.
  • λΉ„ν–‰κΈ°κ°€ 곧 λ– λ‚˜μš”. (The plane is leaving soon.)
  • μ €λŠ” λ‹€μŒ 주에 ν•œκ΅μ„ λ– λ‚˜μš”. (I'm leaving Korea next week.)
Grammar note: λ– λ‚˜λ‹€ also ends in ㅏ, so it behaves like κ°€λ‹€ β€” λ– λ‚˜ + μ•„μš” β†’ λ– λ‚˜μš” (NOT λ– λ‚˜μ•„μš”).

5. κ±·λ‹€ (to walk)

A γ„·-irregular verb β€” the stem-final γ„· changes to γ„Ή before a vowel-starting ending.
  • μ €λŠ” 맀일 30λΆ„μ”© κ±Έμ–΄μš”. (I walk for 30 minutes every day.)
  • κ³΅μ›μ—μ„œ 같이 κ±Έμ„κΉŒμš”? (Shall we walk together in the park?)
Grammar note: γ„·-irregular β€” κ±·λ‹€ β†’ κ±Έμ–΄μš”/κ±Έμ„κΉŒμš” (the γ„· becomes γ„Ή). Not all γ„·-final verbs do this β€” λ°›λ‹€(to receive) and λ‹«λ‹€(to close) stay regular: λ°›μ•„μš”, λ‹«μ•„μš”.

πŸ—£οΈ How They Work in a Sentence

  1. μ €λŠ” 학ꡐ에 κ±Έμ–΄μ„œ κ°€μš”. (I walk to school. / I go to school on foot.)
  1. κΈ°μ°¨κ°€ 9μ‹œμ— λ– λ‚˜μ„œ 11μ‹œμ— λ„μ°©ν•΄μš”. (The train leaves at 9 and arrives at 11.)
  1. μ†λ‹˜μ΄ 곧 올 κ±°μ˜ˆμš”, κ·ΈλŸ¬λ‹ˆκΉŒ 빨리 κ°€μš”! (The guest will come soon, so let's go quickly!)

🧱 General Formation Rule

  • ㅏ-ending verbs (κ°€λ‹€, λ– λ‚˜λ‹€): the stem-final ㅏ absorbs the μ•„μš” ending, so the polite present is just stem + μš” β€” κ°€μš”, λ– λ‚˜μš” (not κ°€μ•„μš”/λ– λ‚˜μ•„μš”).
  • γ…—-ending verbs (μ˜€λ‹€): 였 + μ•„ contracts to 와, giving μ™€μš”.
  • ν•˜λ‹€ verbs (λ„μ°©ν•˜λ‹€): conjugate normally β€” λ„μ°©ν•΄μš”, λ„μ°©ν–ˆμ–΄μš”, 도착할 κ±°μ˜ˆμš”.
  • γ„·-irregular verbs (κ±·λ‹€): γ„· changes to γ„Ή before a vowel-starting ending β€” κ±Έμ–΄μš”, κ±Έμ„κΉŒμš”, 걸으면. (Only some γ„·-final verbs are irregular β€” λ“£λ‹€(to listen)β†’λ“€μ–΄μš” and 묻닀(to ask)β†’λ¬Όμ–΄μš” follow the same pattern, but λ°›λ‹€ and λ‹«λ‹€ do not.)
  • Destination particle 에 marks "to" with κ°€λ‹€/μ˜€λ‹€/λ„μ°©ν•˜λ‹€ (학ꡐ에 κ°€μš”, 집에 μ™€μš”, 역에 λ„μ°©ν•΄μš”); 을/λ₯Ό can mark a path or area traveled through (길을 κ±·λ‹€ β€” to walk a road).

Cross-check these definitions and example usages anytime on korean.go.kr (ꡭ립ꡭ어원 ν‘œμ€€κ΅μ–΄λŒ€μ‚¬μ „) β€” search κ°€λ‹€, μ˜€λ‹€, λ„μ°©ν•˜λ‹€, λ– λ‚˜λ‹€, and κ±·λ‹€ for official definitions and more example sentences.

πŸ” Synonym Alert

  • κ°€λ‹€ vs λ– λ‚˜λ‹€ β€” κ°€λ‹€ is the neutral, general word for "to go" anywhere. λ– λ‚˜λ‹€ specifically emphasizes leaving a place behind, often with a sense of departure or finality (a trip, a flight, moving away).
  • μ˜€λ‹€ vs λ„μ°©ν•˜λ‹€ β€” μ˜€λ‹€ simply describes movement toward the speaker or "here" (μΉœκ΅¬κ°€ μ™€μš” β€” my friend is coming). λ„μ°©ν•˜λ‹€ is more formal and focuses on the exact moment of reaching a destination (κΈ°μ°¨κ°€ λ„μ°©ν•΄μš” β€” the train arrives).

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  1. Don't say κ°€μ•„μš” β€” κ°€λ‹€'s ㅏ-ending stem merges with μ•„μš”, so it's just κ°€μš”.
  1. Don't say μ˜€μ•„μš” β€” 였 + μ•„ contracts to 와, so it's μ™€μš”, not μ˜€μ•„μš”.
  1. Don't say λ„μ°©ν•˜μš” β€” ν•˜λ‹€ verbs conjugate to ν•΄μš”, so it's λ„μ°©ν•΄μš”.
  1. Don't say κ±·μ–΄μš” β€” κ±·λ‹€ is γ„·-irregular, so the γ„· becomes γ„Ή: κ±Έμ–΄μš”. But don't over-apply this β€” λ°›λ‹€(λ°›μ•„μš”) and λ‹«λ‹€(λ‹«μ•„μš”) are regular.
  1. Don't confuse κ°€λ‹€ and λ‹€λ‹ˆλ‹€ β€” κ°€λ‹€ describes a single trip ("I'm going to school"), while λ‹€λ‹ˆλ‹€ means to attend or commute somewhere regularly ("I attend school" = 학ꡐ에 λ‹€λ…€μš”).
이제 κ°€λ‹€, μ˜€λ‹€, λ„μ°©ν•˜λ‹€, λ– λ‚˜λ‹€, κ±·λ‹€λ‘œ 이동과 여행에 λŒ€ν•΄ 자유둭게 말해 λ³΄μ„Έμš”! πŸšΆπŸš—βœˆοΈ
