Action verb stem + -는 길에

• 가다 [ga-da] → 가는 길에 [ga-neun gi-re] — on the way going

• 오다 [o-da] → 오는 길에 [o-neun gi-re] — on the way coming

• 돌아오다 [do-ra-o-da] → 돌아오는 길에 [do-ra-o-neun gi-re] — on the way back

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

• ❌ Using -는 길에 for any random “while” → ✅ it usually needs a route/process, often physical movement.

• ❌ Confusing 가는 길에 and 오는 길에 → ✅ choose based on direction toward/away from the speaker’s viewpoint.

• ❌ Forgetting that 길 is a noun → ✅ write it spaced: 가는 길에, not 가는길에.

• ❌ Overusing it when no route is involved → ✅ use -는 동안, -면서, or 중에 for general “during/while.”

• ❌ Confusing -는 길에 with -는 김에 → ✅ 길에 = on the way; 김에 = since the chance came up.

Tip 💡 Direction depends on the speaker’s viewpoint, so both 집에 가는 길 and 집에 오는 길 can be natural in different contexts.
