Iru's Note: Talking about quality and price is one of the most useful skills for everyday life in Korea โ€” whether you're shopping at a ๋ฐฑํ™”์ , haggling at a ์‹œ์žฅ, or just chatting about a friend's new bag. This lesson pairs perfectly with what you already know about stores and money!

๐ŸŽฏ Big Picture

Every time you shop, compliment someone's outfit, or compare products, you'll reach for words that describe quality and price. These five words let you talk about whether something looks expensive or cheap, whether it's actually worth the money, and how to describe that "fancy" feeling some things have. In Korean, price and quality are described with descriptive verbs (ํ˜•์šฉ์‚ฌ) โ€” except for ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„, which is a noun you pair with ์ข‹๋‹ค/๋‚˜์˜๋‹ค/๋†’๋‹ค.

๐Ÿ“– Core Vocabulary Family

1. ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค (high-end / luxurious / classy)

Describes something that looks or feels expensive, elegant, or premium โ€” even if it isn't literally costly.
  • ์ด ํ˜ธํ…”์€ ์ •๋ง ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฌ์›Œ์š”. (This hotel is really luxurious.)
  • ๊ทธ ์‹œ๊ณ„๋Š” ๋””์ž์ธ์ด ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฌ์›Œ ๋ณด์—ฌ์š”. (That watch looks high-end in design.)
Grammar note: ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค is a ใ…‚-irregular adjective. The ๋ฐ›์นจ ใ…‚ becomes ์šฐ before -์–ด์š”: ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ + ์–ด์š” โ†’ ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฌ์›Œ์š”.

2. ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค (expensive)

Describes something that costs a lot of money.
  • ์ด ๊ฐ€๋ฐฉ์€ ๋„ˆ๋ฌด ๋น„์‹ธ์š”. (This bag is too expensive.)
  • ์„œ์šธ์€ ์ง‘๊ฐ’์ด ๋น„์‹ธ์š”. (Housing prices are expensive in Seoul.)
Grammar note: ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค ends in ใ…, so -์•„์š” attaches and merges: ๋น„์‹ธ + ์•„์š” โ†’ ๋น„์‹ธ์š” (no visible change since ์‹ธ already ends in ใ…).

3. ์‹ธ๋‹ค (cheap / inexpensive)

Describes something that costs little money. Can sometimes sound a bit blunt or imply lower quality.
  • ์ด ์‹๋‹น์€ ์Œ์‹์ด ์‹ธ๊ณ  ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š”. (This restaurant's food is cheap and delicious.)
  • ์‹œ์žฅ์—์„œ๋Š” ๋ฌผ๊ฑด์ด ๋” ์‹ธ์š”. (Things are cheaper at the market.)
Grammar note: Same pattern as ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค โ€” ์‹ธ + ์•„์š” โ†’ ์‹ธ์š”.

4. ์ €๋ ดํ•˜๋‹ค (affordable / budget-friendly)

A softer, more neutral way of saying something is inexpensive โ€” often used in advertising or polite contexts where ์‹ธ๋‹ค might sound too blunt.
  • ์ด ์˜ท์€ ํ’ˆ์งˆ๋„ ์ข‹๊ณ  ๊ฐ€๊ฒฉ๋„ ์ €๋ ดํ•ด์š”. (These clothes have good quality and an affordable price.)
  • ์ €๋ ดํ•œ ํ•ญ๊ณต๊ถŒ์„ ์ฐพ๊ณ  ์žˆ์–ด์š”. (I'm looking for an affordable plane ticket.)
Grammar note: ์ €๋ ดํ•˜๋‹ค is a regular ํ•˜๋‹ค adjective: ์ €๋ ดํ•˜ + ์—ฌ์š” โ†’ ์ €๋ ดํ•ด์š”.

5. ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ (cost-effectiveness / value for money)

A noun (short for ๊ฐ€๊ฒฉ ๋Œ€๋น„ ์„ฑ๋Šฅ โ€” "performance relative to price"). Almost always paired with ์ข‹๋‹ค, ๋‚˜์˜๋‹ค, ๋†’๋‹ค, or ๋›ฐ์–ด๋‚˜๋‹ค.
  • ์ด ๋…ธํŠธ๋ถ์€ ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„๊ฐ€ ์ •๋ง ์ข‹์•„์š”. (This laptop has really good value for money.)
  • ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ ์ตœ๊ณ ์˜ ์‹๋‹น์„ ์ถ”์ฒœํ•ด ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. (Please recommend a restaurant with the best value for money.)
Grammar note: Since ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ is a noun, use ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„๊ฐ€ + adjective (์ข‹๋‹ค/๋‚˜์˜๋‹ค/๋†’๋‹ค/๋›ฐ์–ด๋‚˜๋‹ค), not ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ํ•˜๋‹ค.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ How They Work in a Sentence

  1. ์ด ์นดํŽ˜๋Š” ์ธํ…Œ๋ฆฌ์–ด๊ฐ€ ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ์ง€๋งŒ, ์ปคํ”ผ ๊ฐ’์€ ์ƒ๊ฐ๋ณด๋‹ค ๋น„์‹ธ์ง€ ์•Š์•„์š”. (This cafe's interior is luxurious, but the coffee isn't as expensive as you'd think.)
  1. ์‹ผ ๋ฌผ๊ฑด์ด๋ผ๊ณ  ๋‹ค ๋‚˜์œ ๊ฑด ์•„๋‹ˆ์—์š”. ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„๊ฐ€ ์ข‹์€ ์ œํ’ˆ๋„ ๋งŽ์•„์š”. (Cheap items aren't all bad โ€” there are many products with good value for money.)
  1. ์นœ๊ตฌ๊ฐ€ ์ถ”์ฒœํ•œ ์‹๋‹น์€ ๊ฐ€๊ฒฉ์ด ์ €๋ ดํ•œ๋ฐ ์Œ์‹์€ ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฌ์šด ๋ง›์ด ๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”. (The restaurant my friend recommended was affordable, but the food tasted high-end.)

๐Ÿงฑ General Formation Rule

  • ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค is ใ…‚-irregular: ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ + ์–ด์š” โ†’ ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฌ์›Œ์š” (ใ…‚ โ†’ ์šฐ + ์–ด์š”).
  • ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค / ์‹ธ๋‹ค are regular ใ…-stem adjectives: stem + ์•„์š” โ†’ ๋น„์‹ธ์š” / ์‹ธ์š” (no change because the stem already ends in ใ…).
  • ์ €๋ ดํ•˜๋‹ค is a regular ํ•˜๋‹ค adjective: ์ €๋ ดํ•˜ + ์—ฌ์š” โ†’ ์ €๋ ดํ•ด์š”.
  • Modifier (noun-describing) forms: ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฌ์šด, ๋น„์‹ผ, ์‹ผ, ์ €๋ ดํ•œ (e.g., ๋น„์‹ผ ๊ฐ€๋ฐฉ = an expensive bag).
  • ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ is a noun โ€” pair it with ๊ฐ€/์ด + ์ข‹๋‹ค/๋‚˜์˜๋‹ค/๋†’๋‹ค/๋›ฐ์–ด๋‚˜๋‹ค to describe value (๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„๊ฐ€ ์ข‹๋‹ค = good value for money).
  • To compare, use ๋ณด๋‹ค (~๋ณด๋‹ค ๋น„์‹ธ์š”/์‹ธ์š” = more expensive/cheaper than ~).
๐Ÿ”Ž
Cross-check: For official definitions and usage examples, search ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค, ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค, ์‹ธ๋‹ค, ์ €๋ ดํ•˜๋‹ค, and ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ on ํ‘œ์ค€๊ตญ์–ด๋Œ€์‚ฌ์ „ (stdict.korean.go.kr) or korean.go.kr.

๐Ÿ” Synonym Alert

  • ์‹ธ๋‹ค vs ์ €๋ ดํ•˜๋‹ค โ€” both mean "cheap/affordable," but ์‹ธ๋‹ค is more casual and can sound blunt or even imply "cheaply made," while ์ €๋ ดํ•˜๋‹ค is softer and more positive, often used in marketing (์ €๋ ดํ•œ ๊ฐ€๊ฒฉ sounds nicer than ์‹ผ ๊ฐ€๊ฒฉ).
  • ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค vs ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค โ€” ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค is purely about price (it costs a lot), while ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค is about the impression of quality or elegance โ€” something can look ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค without being ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค, and vice versa.

โš ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge

  1. Don't say ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ํ•˜๋‹ค โ€” ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ is a noun, so it must be paired with ์ข‹๋‹ค/๋‚˜์˜๋‹ค/๋†’๋‹ค (๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„๊ฐ€ ์ข‹์•„์š”, not ๊ฐ€์„ฑ๋น„ํ•ด์š”).
  1. Don't forget ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค is ใ…‚-irregular โ€” ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ์–ด์š” is incorrect; the correct form is ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฌ์›Œ์š”.
  1. Calling something ์‹ธ๋‹ค to a salesperson or about a gift can sound rude or imply it's low quality โ€” ์ €๋ ดํ•˜๋‹ค is the safer, more polite choice.
  1. Don't confuse ์‹ธ๋‹ค (cheap) with ์‚ฌ๋‹ค (to buy) โ€” they look and sound similar but have completely different meanings!
  1. Remember that ๋น„์‹ธ๋‹ค and ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค aren't always linked โ€” a cheap item can look ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค, and an expensive item isn't automatically ๊ณ ๊ธ‰์Šค๋Ÿฝ๋‹ค.
