TL;DR 🦄
  • 📰 Editorial reading means finding the writer’s main claim, not just translating every sentence.
  • 🧭 Look for a map: 문제 (problem) → 근거 (evidence/grounds) → 반론 (counterargument) → 결론 (conclusion).
  • 🔍 Connector words like 그러나 (however), 따라서 (therefore), and (in other words) show how the argument moves.

🌈 The Big Picture

Reading a Korean editorial is less like “decode every word” and more like “follow the writer’s trail of breadcrumbs.” 🍞 A 사설 [sa-seol] means an editorial, and a 논설문 [non-seol-mun] means an argumentative/editorial-style essay.
Your goal is to identify what the writer wants you to think, why they think it, and how they guide you there. The magic words are 주장 [ju-jang] (claim), 근거 [geun-geo] (evidence/grounds), 반론 [bal-lon] (counterargument), and 결론 [gyeol-lon] (conclusion). 🧠
Advanced reading is not about speed first. It is about structure first: find the main claim, mark the evidence, notice any contrast, and then judge the conclusion. Fast reading comes later; today we give the argument an X-ray. 🩻

🎨 The Core Editorial Analysis Family

  • 주장 [ju-jang] → claim / argument. This is the writer’s main point.
  • 논지 [non-ji] → line of argument / thesis direction. Slightly more formal and useful for analysis.
  • 근거 [geun-geo] → evidence / grounds. This supports the claim.
  • 예시 [ye-si] → example. This makes a claim easier to understand.
  • 반론 [bal-lon] → counterargument. This is the opposing view.
  • 결론 [gyeol-lon] → conclusion. This is where the writer lands.
  • 필자 [pil-ja] → writer/author. Used when analyzing intent.
  • 의도 [ui-do] → intent/purpose. What the writer is trying to do.
  • 어조 [eo-jo] → tone. Critical, cautious, supportive, skeptical, etc.
  • 접속 표현 [jeop-sok pyo-hyeon] → connective expression. Words that show contrast, cause, result, or summary.
Helpful connectors:
  • 그러나 [geu-reo-na] → however / but ⚖️
  • 따라서 [tta-ra-seo] → therefore / accordingly 🧭
  • [jeuk] → in other words / that is 🪄
  • 예를 들어 [ye-reul deu-reo] → for example 🧪
  • 반면에 [ban-myeo-ne] → on the other hand 🔁
  • 결국 [gyeol-guk] → in the end / ultimately 🏁

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

  • 필자의 주장은 분명해요. [pil-ja-ui ju-jang-eun bun-myeong-hae-yo] — The writer’s claim is clear. 📰
    • 필자 = writer, 주장 = claim, 분명하다 = to be clear.
  • 이 근거는 주장을 뒷받침해요. [i geun-geo-neun ju-jang-eul dwit-bat-chim-hae-yo] — This evidence supports the claim. 🧱
    • 근거 = evidence/grounds, 뒷받침하다 = to support/back up.
  • 그러나 반론도 중요해요. [geu-reo-na bal-lon-do jung-yo-hae-yo] — However, the counterargument is also important. ⚖️
    • 그러나 = however, 반론 = counterargument, 중요하다 = to be important.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Use a four-step reading frame:
  1. Find the claim: 주장은 무엇인가요? [ju-jang-eun mu-eot-in-ga-yo] — What is the claim?
  1. Check the grounds: 근거는 충분한가요? [geun-geo-neun chung-bun-han-ga-yo] — Is the evidence sufficient?
  1. Notice contrast: 반론은 무엇인가요? [bal-lon-eun mu-eot-in-ga-yo] — What is the counterargument?
  1. Judge the landing: 결론은 타당한가요? [gyeol-lon-eun ta-dang-han-ga-yo] — Is the conclusion valid/reasonable?

📚 Cross-check note

The vocabulary and analysis terms in this lesson were checked against National Institute of Korean Language resources at korean.go.kr, including standard Korean usage for 주장 (claim), 근거 (grounds), 반론 (counterargument), 결론 (conclusion), and formal connective expressions. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • 사설 [sa-seol] → editorial; commonly used for newspaper/editorial writing.
  • 논설문 [non-seol-mun] → argumentative essay/editorial-style writing; broader school/academic term.
  • 주장 [ju-jang] → claim; everyday and academic.
  • 논지 [non-ji] → line of argument; more formal/analytical.
  • 근거 [geun-geo] → evidence/grounds; core analysis word.
  • 이유 [i-yu] → reason; more general and simpler than 근거.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 주장 = “topic” → ✅ 주장 = claim/argument. A topic is what the text is about; a claim is what the writer argues.
  • ❌ Every example is a 근거 → ✅ 예시 explains; 근거 supports. Sometimes an example is evidence, but not always.
  • ❌ Ignoring 그러나 → ✅ contrast words often signal the real turning point. ⚖️
  • ❌ Treating 반론 as the writer’s opinion → ✅ 반론 is usually an opposing view that the writer may reject or answer.
  • ❌ Translating first, analyzing later → ✅ skim the structure first, then translate the tricky sentence.
🎉 Once you can spot 주장, 근거, 반론, and 결론, editorials stop being foggy walls of text and start looking like argument maps. 🗺️
