TL;DR 🦄
  • 아서 / 어서 connects a reason to a result: because / so.
  • Use 아서 after many 아 / 오 vowel stems, and 어서 after many other stems.
  • Attach it to the stem, not the polite ending: 좋다좋아서, 먹다먹어서.

and listen to 좋아서 마셔요, 먹어서 쉬어요, and 아파서 쉬어요.

🌈 The Big Picture

The connector 아서 / 어서 links two ideas in a cause-and-effect relationship. The first part gives the reason, and the second part gives the result.

Think of it as a bridge:
  • reason → result
  • because → so
  • cause → effect

Examples:
= The food is delicious, so I eat a lot.
= Coffee is expensive, so I do not drink it.
= I am sick, so I rest.

🧩 Core Pattern

Start with the dictionary form, remove , then choose 아서 or 어서.

🛠️ How to Build Reason-Result Sentences

  1. Choose the reason word: 좋다, 먹다, 아프다.
  1. Remove to find the stem.
  1. Add the correct connector:
      • 아서 for many 아 / 오 vowel stems
      • 어서 for many other stems
      • some forms combine naturally, like 비싸다비싸서
  1. Add the result:
= It is good, so I drink it.
= I eat, so I rest.
= I am sick, so I do not go.

🔍 아서 vs 어서

Use the last vowel in the stem as a beginner-friendly guide.

Often use: 아서

Often use:

Useful safe forms

🚫 Beginner Usage Limit

For this beginner lesson, keep 아서 / 어서 for statements that explain a reason and result.

Use it for:
= I am sick, so I rest.
= It is expensive, so I do not buy it.

Avoid using it for commands or suggestions here:
  • ❌ “Because you are sick, rest.”
  • ❌ “Because it is good, let’s buy it.”

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
