Basic Grammar
🎯
TL;DR 🦄
  • -(으)니까 [-(eu)-ni-kka] means because / since, especially when giving a reason for a request, command, suggestion, or decision.
  • Use -니까 after vowel stems and -으니까 after consonant stems: 바쁘다 → 바쁘니까, 춥다 → 추우니까, 먹다 → 먹으니까.
  • It is very useful before endings like -세요 (please...), -(으)ㅂ시다 (let’s...), and -(으)ㄹ까요? (shall we...?).

🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)니까 gives a reason, but it has a special beginner-friendly superpower: it works naturally when the second half is a request, command, suggestion, or decision. 🧭
Think:
  • Because X, please Y.
  • Since X, let’s Y.
  • Because X, shall we Y?
Examples:
  • 날씨가 추우니까 창문을 닫으세요. [nal-ssi-ga chu-u-ni-kka chang-mu-neul da-deu-se-yo] (Because the weather is cold, please close the window.) 🪟
  • 시간이 없으니까 택시를 탑시다. [si-ga-ni eop-seu-ni-kka taek-si-reul tap-si-da] (Since we don’t have time, let’s take a taxi.) 🚕
  • 비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요. [bi-ga o-ni-kka u-sa-neul ga-jyeo-ga-se-yo] (Because it’s raining, please take an umbrella.) ☔
Compare with 아서/어서:
  • 아파서 쉬어요. (I’m sick, so I rest.) ✅ smooth reason-result statement
  • 아프니까 쉬세요. (Because you’re sick, please rest.) ✅ reason for request

🎨 The Core Pattern

Attach -(으)니까 to a verb or adjective stem.
  • Vowel stem + 니까
    • 가다 [ga-da] → 가니까 [ga-ni-kka] (because someone goes)
    • 오다 [o-da] → 오니까 [o-ni-kka] (because someone/it comes)
    • 바쁘다 [ba-ppeu-da] → 바쁘니까 [ba-ppeu-ni-kka] (because someone is busy)
  • Consonant stem + 으니까
    • 먹다 [meok-da] → 먹으니까 [meo-geu-ni-kka] (because someone eats)
    • 읽다 [ik-da] → 읽으니까 [il-geu-ni-kka] (because someone reads)
    • 없다 [eop-da] → 없으니까 [eop-seu-ni-kka] (because there is none / because someone doesn’t have)
  • -ending stem: drop + 니까
    • 살다 [sal-da] → 사니까 [sa-ni-kka] (because someone lives)
    • 만들다 [man-deul-da] → 만드니까 [man-deu-ni-kka] (because someone makes)

🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence

  • 늦었으니까 빨리 가세요. [neu-jeo-sseu-ni-kka ppal-li ga-se-yo] (Because you’re late, please go quickly.) 🏃
    • 늦다 = to be late, 빨리 = quickly, 가세요 = please go.
  • 배고프니까 밥을 먹읍시다. [bae-go-peu-ni-kka ba-beul meo-geup-si-da] (Because we’re hungry, let’s eat.) 🍚
    • 배고프다 = to be hungry, = meal/rice, 먹읍시다 = let’s eat.
  • 길이 복잡하니까 지하철을 탈까요? [gi-ri bok-jja-pa-ni-kka ji-ha-cheo-reul tal-kka-yo] (Since the road is crowded, shall we take the subway?) 🚇
    • = road, 복잡하다 = to be crowded/complicated, 지하철 = subway.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Verb / adjective
  • Dictionary form → remove → choose 니까 or 으니까
    • 바쁘다 → 바쁘니까
    • 먹다 → 먹으니까
    • 읽다 → 읽으니까
    • 살다 → 사니까 ( drops)
    • 만들다 → 만드니까 ( drops)
Common irregular-looking beginner forms
  • 춥다추우니까 (because it’s cold) 🧥
  • 덥다더우니까 (because it’s hot) 🥵
  • 어렵다어려우니까 (because it’s difficult) 🧩
  • 듣다들으니까 (because someone listens/hears) 👂
Past reason
  • Past tense + 으니까/니까
    • 먹었다 → 먹었으니까 (because someone ate)
    • 늦었다 → 늦었으니까 (because someone was late)
    • 갔다 → 갔으니까 (because someone went)
Nouns
  • Consonant-ending noun + 이니까
    • 학생이니까 (because someone is a student) 🎒
    • 주말이니까 (because it’s the weekend) 🛍️
  • Vowel-ending noun + 니까
    • 의사니까 (because someone is a doctor) 🩺
    • 휴가니까 (because it’s vacation) 🏖️

🧭 When to Use -(으)니까

Use -(으)니까 when the result part is:
  • a request: 추우니까 창문을 닫으세요. (Because it’s cold, please close the window.) 🪟
  • a command/instruction: 늦었으니까 빨리 오세요. (Because you’re late, please come quickly.) 🏃
  • a suggestion: 배고프니까 밥을 먹읍시다. (Because we’re hungry, let’s eat.) 🍚
  • a proposal question: 시간이 없으니까 택시를 탈까요? (Since we don’t have time, shall we take a taxi?) 🚕
  • a speaker’s judgment/decision: 비가 오니까 집에 있을게요. (Because it’s raining, I’ll stay home.) 🏠
Quick contrast:
  • 아파서 쉬어요. = I’m sick, so I rest. ✅
  • 아프니까 쉬세요. = Because you’re sick, please rest. ✅

📚 Cross-check note

The use of -(으)니까 for reasons/grounds, including reasons for commands, requests, and suggestions, and its contrast with 아서/어서, was cross-checked against korean.go.kr. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

These all connect reasons, but they do not feel identical:
  • -(으)니까 [-(eu)-ni-kka] → because/since; useful for requests, commands, suggestions, judgments 🧭
  • 아서/어서 [a-seo/eo-seo] → because/so; smooth reason-result statements 🌉
  • -기 때문에 [-gi ttae-mu-ne] → because; stronger, clearer, more explicit reason 💪
  • N 때문에 [N ttae-mu-ne] → because of N

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 바빠요니까 → ✅ 바쁘니까 (Attach to the stem, not to .) 📅
  • 먹니까 → ✅ 먹으니까 (Consonant stem needs 으니까.) 🍚
  • 살으니까 → ✅ 사니까 ( drops before 니까.) 🏠
  • 춥으니까 → ✅ 추우니까 (춥다 has the common -irregular change.) 🧥
  • 비싸서 때문에 → ✅ 비싸니까, 비싸서, or 비싸기 때문에 (Do not stack reason grammar.) 💸

You now have the “reason for request” connector: -(으)니까. Use it when the reason supports what you want someone to do, what you suggest, or what you decide. 🧭✨
