Reflecting on Your Intermediate Journey
Look back, take stock, and speak about your own learning — in Korean.
Iru Helper Note
One of the most powerful things you can do as a language learner is talk about your own learning process — in the language itself. This lesson gives you the vocabulary and expressions to do exactly that.
한국어를 배우면서 많이 성장한 것 같아요.
(I feel like I've grown a lot through learning Korean.)
🔍 What You'll Learn Today
By this point in your intermediate journey, you've covered a lot — discourse connectors, nuanced filler words, emotional expressions, certainty language, and conversation management. This lesson gives you the tools to reflect on that journey in Korean: to talk about your progress, describe what was hard, what clicked, and what you're still working on. These are also extremely natural conversation topics when speaking with Korean friends or teachers.
📌 Reflective Language for Learners
Expression | Use | Meaning |
-면서 많이 배웠어요 | Progress reflection | I learned a lot while doing... |
처음엔 어려웠는데 이제는... | Before/After contrast | At first it was hard, but now... |
아직도 어려운 부분이 있어요 | Honest acknowledgment | There are still parts I find hard |
생각보다 빨리 늘고 있는 것 같아요 | Positive surprise | I think I'm improving faster than expected |
꾸준히 하는 게 중요한 것 같아요 | Key insight | I think consistency is important |
이제 좀 자신이 생겼어요 | Growing confidence | I've gained a bit of confidence now |
아직 갈 길이 멀지만... | Humble long view | I still have a long way to go, but... |
그래도 많이 늘었어요 | Encouragement | Still, I've improved a lot |
💡 Key pattern: Processing + 것 같아요 = reflecting on something as an observation about yourself. 이제 + 자신이 생겼어요 = "Now I've gained confidence" — a very natural way to talk about growing ability.
💬 Conversations in Action
Conversation 1 — Talking with a language partner
A: 한국어 공부 요즘 어때요? (How's your Korean study going lately?)
B: 처음엔 문법이 정말 어려웠는데, 이제는 좀 자연스럽게 말할 수 있는 것 같아요. 아직 갈 길이 멀지만 그래도 많이 늘었어요. (At first the grammar was really hard, but now I feel like I can speak a bit more naturally. I still have a long way to go, but I've improved a lot.)
Conversation 2 — What clicked for you?
A: 한국어 공부에서 뭐가 제일 도움이 됐어요? (What has helped the most in your Korean study?)
B: 실제로 대화를 많이 해보는 게 도움이 된 것 같아요. 그리고 꾸준히 하는 게 중요한 것 같아요. (I think actually having lots of conversations helped. And I think consistency is important.)
🌏 Cultural Note — 겸손하게 말하기 (Talking About Yourself Humbly)
When Korean speakers talk about their own progress or abilities, they often soften their claims — even when they're quite good. 이제 좀 할 수 있어요 (I can do it a little now) rather than 잘 해요 (I'm good at it). Aichieving humility signals social awareness, not low confidence. As a learner, using this softened language when discussing your progress sounds natural and earns respect. Don't be afraid to say 아직 부족하지만... (I'm still lacking, but...) followed by something positive — it's one of the most natural and socially smooth patterns in Korean.
