Pattern 1 — Name

Pattern 2 — Job or role

Pattern 3 — Nationality

🚨 Exception Rule(s)

• $$\color{purple}{\text{저}}$$ [jeo] ends in a vowel sound, so add $$\color{purple}{\text{는}}$$ [neun]: $$\color{purple}{\text{저는}}$$ [jeo-neun].

• $$\color{purple}{\text{이름}}$$ [i-reum] ends in the consonant ㅁ, so add $$\color{purple}{\text{은}}$$ [eun]: $$\color{purple}{\text{이름은}}$$ [i-reum-eun].

• $$\color{purple}{\text{입니다}}$$ is written with ㅂ, but pronounced [im-ni-da] because ㅂ becomes ㅁ before ㄴ.

🪞 Synonym Alert

• $$\color{purple}{\text{저는 민아입니다.}}$$ and $$\color{purple}{\text{제 이름은 민아입니다.}}$$ both introduce a name. The first is shorter; the second emphasizes “my name.”

• $$\color{purple}{\text{만나서 반갑습니다}}$$ is the formal intro-friendly “nice to meet you.” Keep this one for first meetings.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

• ❌ $$\color{purple}{\text{저은 학생입니다}}$$ → ✅ $$\color{purple}{\text{저는 학생입니다}}$$ (저 ends in a vowel sound.)

• ❌ $$\color{purple}{\text{제 이름는 민아입니다}}$$ → ✅ $$\color{purple}{\text{제 이름은 민아입니다}}$$ (이름 ends in ㅁ.)

• ❌ $$\color{purple}{\text{저는 미국입니다}}$$ → ✅ $$\color{purple}{\text{저는 미국 사람입니다}}$$ (For nationality, use country + 사람.)
