Showing Contrast: 'On the other hand' — 반면에
Being able to present two sides of something is one of the key markers of intermediate-level speech — and Korean has elegant tools for doing it.
Iru Helper Note
When you want to show that two things are different from each other — or that one situation has two contrasting sides — you need contrast connectors. Today you'll learn five expressions for doing exactly that. From the neutral 반면에 (on the other hand) to the emphatic 그럼에도 불구하고 (even so / nevertheless), these tools let you present balanced, nuanced views — a key skill in intermediate Korean conversation.
(The price is expensive, but on the other hand the quality is really good.)
⚖️ What You'll Learn Today
Real conversation often requires you to present two sides: one city is convenient but expensive; one option has advantages but also disadvantages; something was hard, but you kept going anyway. Today you'll master five contrast expressions that let you do this naturally — from the simple 하지만 (but) you may already know, to the sophisticated 그럼에도 불구하고 (nevertheless). The more you use these, the more balanced and thoughtful your Korean will sound.
📌 Five Ways to Show Contrast
Expression | Literal Meaning | When to Use |
On the other hand / Whereas | Neutral contrast between two things or situations |
But / However | Simple contrast — the most common connector |
그런데 | But / By the way | Soft contrast or gentle shift — less sharp than 하지만 |
Nevertheless / Even so / Despite that | Strong contrast — persisting despite a difficulty |
On the contrary / Rather | The reality is the opposite of what was expected |
💡 Key distinction: 반면에 is a direct A vs. B comparison. 오히려 is for when the outcome is surprising — the opposite of what you'd expect.
Usage patterns:
- A는 [X]한 반면에, B는 [Y]해요.
(A is [X], whereas B is [Y].)
- [problem].
(Despite that, I kept going.)
- [expected outcome]. 오히려 [opposite happened].
(On the contrary, the opposite happened.)
💬 Conversations in Action
Mini-Dialogue 1 — Comparing two apartments
(A: Which of the two apartments is better?
B: A is spacious whereas the transportation is inconvenient. B is small but close to the station.
A: Hmm... since transportation matters more to me, B seems better.)
Mini-Dialogue 2 — Something turned out differently than expected
(A: Was that class difficult?
B: It was very hard at first. Nevertheless, I kept attending. On the contrary, by the end it became my favorite class.
A: Wow, it really makes a difference not to give up.)
Balanced Speech in Korean
Koreans highly value balanced, 균형 잡힌 (well-balanced) perspectives in conversation. Presenting only one side of an issue can come across as biased or incomplete. Using contrast expressions like 반면에 shows that you can see both sides — this is considered a mark of thoughtfulness and social intelligence.
This is especially valued in:
- 직장 대화 (workplace discussions): presenting pros and cons before a decision
- 의견 나누기 (opinion exchanges): acknowledging the other person's point before adding yours
- 비교 (comparisons): describing options fairly
Native speakers instinctively use 반면에 and 하지만 to soften strong claims — rather than saying "this is bad," they say "this is good, but on the other hand, there is this issue." This balance makes them sound more trustworthy and credible.
