TL;DR
  • ๐Ÿ‘ƒ ๋น„์Œํ™” (nasalization) is the rule that turns spoken Korean from "choppy" into smooth nasal melody โ€” stops and ใ„นs morph into nasals at syllable borders.
  • โœจ Three sub-types: Type 1 = stop โ†’ nasal ([k]โ†’[ng], [t]โ†’[n], [p]โ†’[m]) โ€ข Type 2 = ใ„น โ†’ ใ„ด after ใ…/ใ…‡ โ€ข Type 3 = the CASCADE where Type 2 fires first, then Type 1 fires on the result.
  • ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ This rule is everywhere โ€” every formal verb (์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค / ใ…‚๋‹ˆ๋‹ค) and every present-tense modifier (๋Š”) runs through it. Master it and ยฝ of spoken Korean clicks into place.
ย
๐ŸฆŠ
Iru Helper Note: You met basic ๋น„์Œํ™” in Sound Changes: Liaison (Rule 5). This lesson goes deeper โ€” we add the ใ„นโ†’ใ„ด sub-rule (Type 2) that NO ONE remembers, plus the gorgeous cascade rule that explains why ๋…๋ฆฝ is [dong-nip] not [dok-rip]. By the end you'll predict the spoken form of any Korean word that has a stop-batchim + nasal/ใ„น boundary. ๐ŸฆŠ

๐ŸŒˆ The Big Picture

Korean spelling preserves meaning (morphology); pronunciation runs through sound rules. The single most pervasive of these rules is ๋น„์Œํ™” โ€” nasalization โ€” because it fires constantly at every formal-verb ending and every present-tense modifier.
The core idea: when a hard stop meets a nasal (ใ„ด/ใ…), the stop catches the nasal vibe and turns into its nose-friend. Once you internalize this, you'll never say "hap-ni-da" again. ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿ‘ƒ Type 1 โ€” Stop โ†’ Nasal (the classic ๋น„์Œํ™”)

Trigger: plain stop batchim ([k], [t], [p]) + nasal initial (ใ„ด or ใ…)
Action: the batchim turns into its matching nasal.
  • [k] family (ใ„ฑ ใ…‹ ใ„ฒ ใ„ณ ใ„บ) โ†’ ใ…‡ [ng] โ€” ํ•™๋…„ โ†’ [hang-nyeon] ๐Ÿ“š
  • [t] family (ใ„ท ใ…Œ ใ…… ใ…† ใ…ˆ ใ…Š ใ…Ž) โ†’ ใ„ด [n] โ€” ๋‹ซ๋Š” โ†’ [dan-neun] ๐Ÿšช
  • [p] family (ใ…‚ ใ… ใ„ฟ ใ…„) โ†’ ใ… [m] โ€” ํ•ฉ๋‹ˆ๋‹ค โ†’ [ham-ni-da] ๐Ÿ™
More examples:
  • ๊ตญ๋ฌผ โ†’ [gung-mul] ๐Ÿœ (ใ„ฑ + ใ… โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ…)

๐Ÿ”„ Type 2 โ€” ใ„น โ†’ ใ„ด (the rule no one teaches)

Trigger: ใ… batchim or ใ…‡ batchim + ใ„น initial
Action: the ใ„น turns into ใ„ด. The batchim stays the same.
This is the rule that explains why ์‹ฌ๋ฆฌ is [sim-ni] not [sim-ri]. Korean ใ„น cannot follow ใ… or ใ…‡ โ€” it morphs to ใ„ด to keep the mouth happy.
  • ์‹ฌ๋ฆฌ โ†’ [sim-ni] ๐Ÿง  (ใ… + ใ„น โ†’ ใ… + ใ„ด; mental/psychology)
  • ์ข…๋กœ โ†’ [jong-no] ๐Ÿ› (ใ…‡ + ใ„น โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ„ด; Jongno district)
  • ์Œ๋ ฅ โ†’ [eum-nyeok] ๐ŸŒ™ (ใ… + ใ„น โ†’ ใ… + ใ„ด; lunar calendar)
๐Ÿ’ก Why? Korean's flow rules forbid ใ„น right after ใ…/ใ…‡ โ€” it always softens to ใ„ด.

๐ŸŒŠ Type 3 โ€” The CASCADE (two rules fire in sequence)

Trigger: plain stop batchim ([k] or [p]) + ใ„น initial
Action: Type 2 fires FIRST (ใ„น โ†’ ใ„ด), THEN Type 1 fires on the result (stop โ†’ nasal).
This is the Korean sound rule that blows learners' minds. Watch ๋…๋ฆฝ:
  1. Spelled: ๋…๋ฆฝ = ใ„ทใ…—ใ„ฑ + ใ„นใ…ฃใ…‚
  1. Step 1 โ€” Type 2: ใ„ฑ batchim + ใ„น โ†’ ใ„ฑ batchim + ใ„ด โ†’ "๋…๋Šฟ"
  1. Step 2 โ€” Type 1: ใ„ฑ batchim + ใ„ด โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ„ด โ†’ "๋™๋Šฟ"
  1. Spoken: [dong-nip] ๐ŸŒธ
Cascade examples:
  • ์ž…๋ ฅ โ†’ [im-nyeok] โŒจ๏ธ (ใ…‚ + ใ„น โ†’ ใ… + ใ„ด; input)
  • ๋ฐ•๋ ฅ โ†’ [bang-nyeok] ๐Ÿ’ช (ใ„ฑ + ใ„น โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ„ด; vigor)
  • ๋ฐฑ๋กœ โ†’ [baeng-no] ๐Ÿฆฉ (ใ„ฑ + ใ„น โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ„ด; heron)
๐Ÿ’ก The cascade pattern: [k] + ใ„น โ†’ [ng] + ใ„ด โ€ข [p] + ใ„น โ†’ [m] + ใ„ด. Both transformations happen automatically and instantly.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Why This Matters โ€” Verb Endings

Nasalization runs CONSTANTLY in spoken Korean because of two ultra-common patterns:
Formal-polite endings (~์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค / ~ใ…‚๋‹ˆ๋‹ค):
  • ๊ฐ‘๋‹ˆ๋‹ค โ†’ [gam-ni-da] ๐Ÿšถ (go, formal; ใ…‚ + ใ„ด โ†’ ใ… + ใ„ด)
  • ํ•ฉ๋‹ˆ๋‹ค โ†’ [ham-ni-da] ๐Ÿ™ (do, formal)
  • ์ž…๋‹ˆ๋‹ค โ†’ [im-ni-da] ๐Ÿ™‡ (be/wear, formal)
Present-tense modifier (~๋Š”):
If you can run this rule fast on these patterns, every Korean speaker will sound 10ร— more natural to you โ€” and you'll sound natural to them. ๐ŸŽฏ

๐Ÿ“š Cross-check note

All three nasalization sub-types and example words above were cross-checked against the National Institute of Korean Language (korean.go.kr) official Hangul orthography and standard pronunciation rules (ํ‘œ์ค€ ๋ฐœ์Œ๋ฒ• sections 18โ€“20). โœ…

โš ๏ธ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • โŒ Saying "hap-ni-da" for ํ•ฉ๋‹ˆ๋‹ค โ†’ โœ… Type 1: ใ…‚ + ใ„ด โ†’ ใ… + ใ„ด โ†’ [ham-ni-da]. Always. ๐Ÿ™
  • โŒ Saying "sim-ri" for ์‹ฌ๋ฆฌ โ†’ โœ… Type 2: ใ… + ใ„น โ†’ ใ… + ใ„ด โ†’ [sim-ni]. ใ„น cannot follow ใ…. ๐Ÿง
  • โŒ Saying "dok-rip" for ๋…๋ฆฝ โ†’ โœ… Type 3 cascade: ใ„ฑ + ใ„น โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ„ด โ†’ [dong-nip]. Both rules fire. ๐ŸŒธ
  • โŒ Pronouncing ๋จน๋Š” as "meok-neun" โ†’ โœ… Type 1: ใ„ฑ + ใ„ด โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ„ด โ†’ [meong-neun]. ๐Ÿด
  • โŒ Treating spelling as pronunciation โ†’ โœ… Korean spelling preserves morphology; pronunciation runs the rule. ๐Ÿง
  • โŒ Forgetting Type 2 exists โ†’ โœ… ใ…/ใ…‡ + ใ„น ALWAYS triggers ใ„นโ†’ใ„ด. This is the most-missed sub-rule. ๐Ÿ”„

๐ŸŽ‰ Three nasalization sub-types unlocked! You now have the complete ๋น„์Œํ™” toolkit โ€” stopโ†’nasal, ใ„นโ†’ใ„ด, and the cascading magic. Spoken Korean just dropped its biggest opaque-pronunciation barrier. ๐Ÿš€

I. Why does ~์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค always trigger nasalization on stop-batchim verbs?
Answer
The ใ…‚ + ใ„ด boundary โ€” ~์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค has ใ…‚ batchim followed by ใ„ด initial โ€” perfect Type 1 trigger every time.
J. True or false: every formal-polite verb in Korean runs through nasalization.
Answer
True โ€” Because ~์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค / ~ใ…‚๋‹ˆ๋‹ค ALWAYS contains ใ…‚ + ใ„ด, every formal verb is nasalized.

G. Which type explains ๊ตญ๋ฌผ โ†’ [gung-mul]?
Answer
Type 1 โ€” ใ„ฑ batchim + ใ… initial โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ…. No ใ„น involved.
H. Final boss โ€” read aloud and name the type(s) in ๋…๋ฆฝ ์šด๋™ ๐ŸŒธโœŠ
Answer
[dong-nip un-dong] โ€” ๋…๋ฆฝ = Type 3 cascade. ์šด๋™ = no nasalization (ใ„ด batchim + ใ„ท initial doesn't trigger). Independence movement.
I. True or false: Type 3 (cascade) only happens with [k] and [p] batchims.
Answer
True โ€” [k] + ใ„น โ†’ ใ…‡ + ใ„ด, [p] + ใ„น โ†’ ใ… + ใ„ด. [t] batchim + ใ„น is rare and follows different rules.
J. Pitfall check โ€” why is mastering ๋น„์Œํ™” so important for sounding natural?
Answer
Every formal verb runs through it โ€” ~์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค/~ใ…‚๋‹ˆ๋‹ค endings are EVERYWHERE in spoken Korean. Get nasalization wrong and every formal sentence sounds robotic.
ย
๐ŸŽ‰ You crushed all 50! Three sub-types unlocked, formal verbs decoded, and the cascade demystified. Spoken Korean's biggest pronunciation barrier just dissolved. ๐Ÿš€
