to hear sentences like 조금 걸을까 싶어요 [jo-geum geo-reul-kka si-peo-yo], 늦을까 싶어서 전화했어요 [neu-jeul-kka si-peo-seo jeon-hwa-hae-sseo-yo], and 너무 비싸지 않을까 싶어요 [neo-mu bi-ssa-ji a-neul-kka si-peo-yo]. The sound should feel like a small thought bubble, not a loud announcement. 🫧

🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)ㄹ까 싶다 is advanced because it has two friendly-but-slippery moods. One mood is vague intent: “I’m kind of thinking of doing it.” The other mood is soft concern or guess: “I wonder if it might be…” / “I’m worried it may…”
It sounds thoughtful, cautious, and a little internal. If -(으)ㄹ까 하다 is “I’m thinking of doing it,” then -(으)ㄹ까 싶다 is closer to “I’m sort of wondering whether I should…” or “I have a feeling it might…” 🧠
You’ll hear it when someone does not want to sound too direct:
  • 주말에 근처를 걸을까 싶어요.
    • [ju-ma-re geun-cheo-reul geo-reul-kka si-peo-yo] — I’m vaguely thinking of walking around nearby this weekend. 🚶
주말 = weekend; 근처 = nearby area; 걷다 = to walk.
  • 회의가 길어질까 싶어서 커피를 샀어요.
    • [hoe-ui-ga gi-reo-jil-kka si-peo-seo keo-pi-reul sa-sseo-yo] — I bought coffee because I thought the meeting might get long. ☕
회의 = meeting; 길어지다 = to get long; 커피 = coffee; 사다 = to buy.
  • 이 방법이 더 좋지 않을까 싶어요.
    • [i bang-beo-bi deo jo-chi a-neul-kka si-peo-yo] — I wonder if this method might be better. 🧭
방법 = method; = more; 좋다 = to be good.

🎨 The Core -(으)ㄹ까 싶다 Family

1. Soft intent: “I’m vaguely thinking of…”

Use this with action verbs when the idea is not firm yet.
  • 산책하다 [san-chaek-ha-da] — to take a walk → 산책할까 싶어요 [san-chaek-hal-kka si-peo-yo] — I’m thinking of taking a walk.

2. Soft concern or guess: “I wonder if…” / “I’m worried that…”

Use this when you are cautiously guessing or worried about a possible result.
  • 늦다 [neut-da] — to be late → 늦을까 싶어요 [neu-jeul-kka si-peo-yo] — I wonder if it might be late / I’m worried it may be late. ⏰
  • 비싸다 [bi-ssa-da] — to be expensive → 비싸지 않을까 싶어요 [bi-ssa-ji a-neul-kka si-peo-yo] — I wonder if it might be expensive. 💸

  • 위험하다 [wi-heom-ha-da] — to be dangerous → 위험하지 않을까 싶어요 [wi-heom-ha-ji a-neul-kka si-peo-yo] — I worry it might be dangerous. ⚠️

3. Reason form: -(으)ㄹ까 싶어서

This means “because I thought/wondered/was worried…” and explains why someone acted cautiously.
  • 비가 올까 싶어서 우산을 챙겼어요.
    • [bi-ga ol-kka si-peo-seo u-sa-neul chaeng-gyeo-sseo-yo] — I brought an umbrella because I thought it might rain. ☂️

친구 = friend; 바쁘다 = to be busy; 메시지 = message; 보내다 = to send.

🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence

1. Vague plan
  • 내일 아침에는 밥 대신 빵을 먹을까 싶어요.
    • [nae-il a-chi-me-neun bap dae-sin ppang-eul meo-geul-kka si-peo-yo] — I’m thinking of eating bread instead of rice tomorrow morning. 🍞
      내일 = tomorrow; 아침 = morning/breakfast; = rice/meal; 대신 = instead; = bread.

2. Soft concern
  • 그 옷은 지금 입기에 너무 얇지 않을까 싶어요.
    • [geu o-seun ji-geum ip-gi-e neo-mu yal-ji a-neul-kka si-peo-yo] — I wonder if that clothing might be too thin to wear now. 👕
= clothing; 지금 = now; 입다 = to wear; 너무 = too; 얇다 = to be thin.

3. Cautious reason
  • 예약 시간이 바뀔까 싶어서 병원에 전화했어요.
    • [ye-yak si-ga-ni ba-kkwil-kka si-peo-seo byeong-wo-ne jeon-hwa-hae-sseo-yo] — I called the hospital because I thought the reservation time might change. 🏥
예약 시간 = reservation time; 바뀌다 = to change; 병원 = hospital; 전화하다 = to call.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Action verbs and descriptive verbs

  • Vowel stem + ㄹ까 싶다: 가다갈까 싶어요; 보다볼까 싶어요
  • Consonant stem + 을까 싶다: 먹다먹을까 싶어요; 읽다읽을까 싶어요
  • -ending stem + 까 싶다: 만들다만들까 싶어요; 살다살까 싶어요

Past possibility

Use -았/었을까 싶다 when the speaker wonders about something that may already have happened:
  • 친구가 먼저 갔을까 싶어요. [chin-gu-ga meon-jeo ga-sseul-kka si-peo-yo] — I wonder if my friend may have left first.
  • 제가 실수했을까 싶어요. [je-ga sil-su-hae-sseul-kka si-peo-yo] — I wonder if I made a mistake.

Spacing rule

Write a space before 싶다:
  • 갈까 싶어요
  • 먹을까 싶어서
  • 갈까싶어요
  • 먹을까싶어서

🚨 Nuance Rule: 하다, 싶다, 보다

  • 걸을까 해요 [geo-reul-kka hae-yo] — I’m thinking of walking. More like a tentative plan.
  • 걸을까 싶어요 [geo-reul-kka si-peo-yo] — I’m vaguely wondering/thinking of walking. More internal and softer.
  • 늦을까 봐요 [neu-jeul-kka bwa-yo] — I’m worried it will be late. More direct worry; often leads to prevention.
  • 늦을까 싶어요 [neu-jeul-kka si-peo-yo] — I wonder/worry it might be late. Softer, less direct.

📚 Cross-check note

This lesson was cross-checked against National Institute of Korean Language resources at korean.go.kr and the Korean Learners’ Dictionary entry for -ㄹ까 싶다. Their examples show both meanings: an uncertain guess/worry such as 괜찮을까 싶어서, and vague intention such as 걸을까 싶어 or 먹을까 싶다. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -(으)ㄹ까 싶다 → vaguely think/wonder; soft internal concern or intent 🫧
  • -(으)ㄹ까 하다 → be thinking of doing; clearer tentative plan 🤔
  • -(으)ㄹ까 보다 → worried that / suspect that; often more worry-leaning 👀
  • -(으)ㄹ지도 모르다 → might / may; neutral weak possibility 🌙
  • -(으)ㄹ 것 같다 → I think / it seems; often more likely than -(으)ㄹ지도 모르다 🔮

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 갈까싶어요 → ✅ 갈까 싶어요 (Keep a space before 싶어요.)
  • 먹ㄹ까 싶어요 → ✅ 먹을까 싶어요 (Consonant stem + 을까.)
  • 만들을까 싶어요 → ✅ 만들까 싶어요 ( stem keeps ; no extra .)
  • ❌ Treating 먹을까 싶어요 as a firm decision → ✅ It is vague and soft; use 먹기로 했어요 for a decision.
  • ❌ Using 늦을까 싶어요 when you mean a neutral “maybe late” only → ✅ 늦을지도 몰라요 is more neutral; 늦을까 싶어요 sounds like your own worry/guess.

🎉 Now you can express that tiny Korean thought bubble: 걸을까 싶어요, 늦을까 싶어서 전화했어요, 더 좋지 않을까 싶어요. Soft intention, soft concern, strong nuance. 🫧✨
