Summarizing Your Week in 3 Sentences
The ability to give a natural weekly recap in Korean is a sign of genuine conversational fluency.
Iru Helper Note
Koreans ask 이번 주 어땠어요? often — and a fluent answer covers what happened, how you felt, and what's next.
이번 주는 좀 바빴어요. 일이 많았거든요. 그래도 주말에 쉬어서 괜찮아요.
(This week was a bit busy. I had a lot of work, you see. Still, I rested on the weekend so it's okay.)
📝 What You'll Learn Today
Giving a weekly recap is one of the most practical conversational skills — it comes up every Monday and Friday, in casual catch-ups, and whenever someone asks 요즘 어때요? In this lesson you'll learn how to describe your week using past tense, explain why it was that way, and wrap up with a feeling or what's next. You'll practice a natural 3-sentence format that works every time: what happened → why → how you feel / what's next.

💬 Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 — Monday morning
A: 이번 주 어땠어요? (How was this week?)
B: 좀 바빴어요. 마감이 많았거든요. 그래도 다 끝내서 홀가분해요. (It was a bit busy. I had a lot of deadlines, you see. Still, I finished everything so I feel relieved.)
A: 고생했겠다. 이번 주말엔 쉬어요. (That must have been tough. Rest this weekend.)
Dialogue 2 — A good week
A: 요즘 어때요? (How are things lately?)
B: 이번 주는 여유로웠어요. 일도 적었고 친구도 만났거든요. 알차게 보낸 것 같아요. (This week was relaxed. Work was light and I met a friend, you see. I feel like I spent it fruitfully.)
A: 좋겠다. 저는 정신없었어요. (Nice for you. I was frantic.)
🌏 Cultural Note — The Rhythm of Korean Weekly Life
In Korean work and social culture, checking in about the week is a common bridge between tasks or meetings. The phrase 고생했어요 (you worked hard / you've been through a lot) is a versatile acknowledgment of effort that has no direct English equivalent — Koreans say it to each other at the end of a tough week almost reflexively. Another culturally meaningful phrase: 알차게 보냈어요 — describing a week as 알차다 (full/fruitful/well-used) is genuinely complimentary in Korean culture, where productive use of time is valued. And 홀가분하다 (feel unburdened/relieved after finishing something) is the emotional payoff at the end of a stressful week.

~거든요 | Because / you see |
여유로웠어요 | Was relaxed |
별일 없었어요 | Nothing much happened |
홀가분해요 | Feel relieved |
알차게 보냈어요 | Spent fruitfully |
그래도 | Still / even so |
Common Pitfall
~거든요 ≠ ~아/어서. Both give reasons, but:
~아/어서 is a simple causal connection: 바빠서 피곤해요 (I'm tired because I'm busy).
~거든요 provides background explanation as if letting someone in on a reason they might not know: 일이 많았거든요 (I had a lot of work, you see — that's why). ~거든요 sounds more conversational and slightly explanatory.
