🌈 The Big Picture

When texting friends, Koreans often shorten words down to just their first consonant — called 초성 (cho-seong, "initial consonant"). This creates quick, casual abbreviations like ㅇㅇ (yeah), ㄴㄴ (no), and ㄱㄱ (let's go).
  • ㅇㅇ = 응응/어어 → "yeah/uh-huh"
  • ㄴㄴ = 노노/아니아니 → "no no"
  • ㄱㄱ = 가자/고고 → "let's go / go go"
These exist only in text form — you'd never say "ㅇㅇ" out loud. They're the Korean equivalent of typing "k" instead of "okay" in English.

🎭 초성체 Etiquette: When to Use (and Not Use) Texting Slang

초성체 is for close friends and casual chats only — group chats with friends, texting a sibling, fast back-and-forth with classmates. It is not for texting your boss, teachers, elders, or anyone you'd use 존댓말 (formal speech) with.
  • (with close friends) ㅇㅋ ㄱㄱ! — "Ok, let's go!"
  • (with your boss) 네, 알겠습니다. 곧 출발하겠습니다 — "Yes, understood. I'll head out shortly."
If you're ever unsure whether someone is "초성체-close" with you yet, it's safer to spell things out fully — abbreviations can come across as too casual or even rude in the wrong context.

✨ Grammar note: Doubling up abbreviations like ㅊㅋㅊㅋ ("congrats congrats") or ㄱㅅㄱㅅ ("thanks thanks") adds extra enthusiasm — common in excited texts.

✨ Grammar note: Notice there's no 초성체 at all here — full sentences with 존댓말 (formal speech) are expected when texting superiors, even in a quick message.

🧭 Speaking Tip

A good rule of thumb: 초성체 is for texts you'd be comfortable sending with typos and zero punctuation. If the relationship calls for 존댓말 (teachers, bosses, elders, strangers), spell everything out — 네, 알겠습니다 instead of ㅇㅇ, 감사합니다 instead of ㄱㅅ.
Also, these abbreviations are written-only — never say "이응이응" or "기역기역" out loud to mean "yeah" or "let's go." If you want to say these ideas out loud, use the full words: 응, 그래, 가자, 고마워, 진짜, 안녕, 잘 가.
