🌈 The Big Picture

Small talk is the social glue that makes everyday interactions feel warm — with neighbors, coworkers, shop owners, or new acquaintances. Throughout Basic Speaking, you've picked up the building blocks: greetings, weather comments, asking about someone's day, talking about hobbies, giving compliments, and wrapping up a conversation gracefully. This review pulls those threads together into one toolkit.
  • 오늘 날씨 좋네요 — a classic opener that works almost anywhere
— a warm follow-up after a weekend or holiday
  • 다음에 또 봐요 — a friendly, low-commitment way to close things out

🎭 The Big Idea: Small Talk Follows a Rhythm

Korean small talk tends to follow a simple rhythm: opener → follow-up question → reciprocate → close. You comment on something shared (weather, the day, a recent event), ask the other person a related question, answer it yourself when asked back, and then close with a warm, open-ended phrase rather than an abrupt goodbye.
  • (opener) 오늘 진짜 덥네요 — "It's really hot today"
— "What did you do this weekend?"
— "I rested at home. What about you, Jieun?"
— "Well then, see you again!"
Once you recognize this rhythm, you can keep almost any casual conversation flowing — even with limited vocabulary.

🛠️ Putting Together

Translation:
M: "The weather's really nice today!"
J: "It really is. On days like this I want to take a walk."
M: "Me too! I went to the Han River on the weekend, and there were so many people there."
🦄 날씨 comments are the easiest small talk openers — almost everyone has an opinion about the weather, making it a safe, friendly start.
Translation:
J: "Did you have a good weekend?"
M: "Yes, it was good. I watched a movie with a friend. What about you, Jieun?"
J: "I painted. I've been learning painting as a hobby lately."
M: "Oh, that's really cool!"
🦄 Notice the rhythm: question → answer → "what about you?" → answer → compliment. This back-and-forth is the heart of small talk.
Translation:
M: "Wow, it's already this late. While we were talking, I didn't even notice the time passing."
J: "Right, that was really fun. See you again sometime!"
M: "Yes, see you again. Take care getting home!"
🦄 시간 가는 줄 몰랐어요 ("I didn't notice the time passing") is a wonderful, genuine-sounding way to wrap up a conversation that went well.

🗣️ Speaking Practice: Mini Dialogue

[ji-eun ssi, o-raen-ma-ni-e-yo! yo-jeum eo-tteo-ke ji-nae-yo?]
"Jieun, long time no see! How have you been lately?"
[jal ji-nae-yo! byo-ril eop-seo-yo. min-su ssi-neun yo-jeum ba-ppa-yo?]
"I'm doing well! Nothing much going on. Have you been busy lately, Minsu?"
[ne, jom ba-ppa-sseo-yo. geu-rae-do ju-ma-re-neun swi-eo-sseo-yo. ji-eun ssi-neun ju-mal jal bo-nae-sseo-yo?]
"Yes, I was a bit busy. But I rested on the weekend. Did you have a good weekend, Jieun?"
[ne! chin-gu-rang ka-pe-e ga-sseo-yo. geo-gi ko-pi-ga jin-jja ma-shit-deo-ra-go-yo]
"Yes! I went to a café with a friend. The coffee there was really good."
[o, eo-di-ye-yo? jeo-do ga bo-go si-peo-yo]
"Oh, where is it? I'd like to go there too."
[da-eu-me ga-chi ga-yo! shi-gan ga-neun jul mo-reu-go ya-gi-haet-ne-yo — da-eu-me tto bwa-yo!]
"Let's go together next time! I didn't even notice the time passing while we talked — see you again!"

🧭 Speaking Tip

The secret to good small talk isn't having something clever to say — it's keeping the rhythm going. Every time you answer a question, toss one back with "~는요?" ("what about...?"). And don't be afraid of "안전한" (safe) topics like weather, weekends, and hobbies — they work precisely because everyone can relate to them.
When a conversation winds down naturally, closing with something positive (재밌었어요, 시간 가는 줄 몰랐어요) before 다음에 또 봐요 leaves a warm final impression.

⚠️ Common Mix-ups Review

  • ❌ Answering a question but forgetting to ask it back → ✅ Add "~는요?" to keep the conversation balanced (e.g., 지은 씨는요?)
  • ❌ Ending abruptly with just "안녕히 가세요" after a long chat → ✅ Add a warm closing line first, like 오늘 재밌었어요, then say goodbye
  • ❌ Sticking to one topic too long → ✅ Use a follow-up question to pivot naturally
  • ❌ Treating "별일 없어요" as a conversation-ender → ✅ It's an opener too — follow with a question of your own
You've reviewed the full arc of small talk — from openers to graceful exits. ☕✨
