TL;DR ๐ฆ
- ๐งญ ๋ ผ๋ฆฌ์ ์ผ๊ด์ฑ means an argumentโs claims fit together without fighting each other.
- ๐งฉ To test ๋ ผ์ฆ, track the ์ ์ , the ๊ทผ๊ฑฐ, and the ๊ฒฐ๋ก before judging the reasoning.
- โ๏ธ A consistent argument can still be factually wrong or weak, so separate ๋ชจ์ ๋ถ์ฌ from ํ๋น์ฑ.

ย
๐ The Big Picture
When you read an argument, you are not only asking, โDo I agree?โ You are asking, โCan these ideas stand in the same room without throwing chairs?โ ๐ช
The key term is ๋
ผ๋ฆฌ์ ์ผ๊ด์ฑ โ logical consistency. An argument has logical consistency when its premises, reasons, exceptions, and conclusion do not contradict one another. If one sentence says โeveryone must follow the same ruleโ and the next says โone group never has to follow it,โ your contradiction alarm should beep. ๐จ
This lesson focuses on academic Korean vocabulary for evaluating argument structure: ๋
ผ์ฆ (argumentation), ์ ์ (premise), ๊ทผ๊ฑฐ (supporting reason/evidence), ๊ฒฐ๋ก (conclusion), ๋ชจ์ (contradiction), ๋ชจ์ ๋ถ์ฌ (absence of contradiction), and ํ๋น์ฑ (validity or soundness of reasoning). ๐ง
Important distinction: an argument can be logically consistent but still false. For example, if all the pieces fit together but the starting assumption is wrong, the structure may be neat while the claim is still unreliable. A tidy suitcase can still be packed with socks you do not need. ๐งฆ
๐จ The Core Argument-Consistency Family
1. ๋ ผ์ฆ โ argumentation ๐งฑ
๋
ผ์ฆ means the process of supporting a claim with reasons. It usually contains:
- ์ฃผ์ฅ โ claim; the point being argued
- ๊ทผ๊ฑฐ โ reason/evidence; what supports the claim
- ๊ฒฐ๋ก โ conclusion; the final judgment reached from the reasoning
Example idea:
์จ๋ผ์ธ ํ์๋ ์ด๋ ์๊ฐ์ ์ค์ธ๋ค. ๋ฐ๋ผ์ ์
๋ฌด ํจ์จ์ ๋์ผ ์ ์๋ค.
Online meetings reduce travel time. Therefore, they can improve work efficiency. ๐ป
The reason and conclusion point in the same direction, so the argument is basically consistent.
2. ์ ์ โ premise or assumption ๐
A ์ ์ is a starting point that the argument depends on. It can be openly stated or hidden.
Example:
๋์ค๊ตํต ์ด์ฉ์๊ฐ ๋์ด๋๋ฉด ๋๋ก์ ์ฐจ๋ ์๊ฐ ์ค์ด๋ ๋ค.
If public transportation users increase, the number of cars on the road decreases. ๐
That sentence can be a premise for an argument about reducing congestion. If the premise does not hold in a specific situation, the argument becomes weaker.
3. ๋ชจ์ and ๋ชจ์ ๋ถ์ฌ โ contradiction and no contradiction โ๏ธ
๋ชจ์ means contradiction: two claims cannot both be true at the same time under the same conditions. ๋ชจ์ ๋ถ์ฌ means absence of contradiction.
Contradictory:
๋ชจ๋ ์๋ฃ๋ฅผ ๊ณต๊ฐํด์ผ ํ๋ค. ๊ทธ๋ฌ๋ ์ด๋ค ์๋ฃ๋ ๊ณต๊ฐํ๋ฉด ์ ๋๋ค.
All materials must be disclosed. However, no materials should be disclosed. ๐
Consistent with a condition:
์ผ๋ฐ ์๋ฃ๋ ๊ณต๊ฐํ๋, ๊ฐ์ธ์ ๋ณด๊ฐ ํฌํจ๋ ์๋ฃ๋ ๋ณดํธํด์ผ ํ๋ค.
General materials should be disclosed, but materials containing personal information should be protected. ๐
The second version avoids contradiction by clearly separating the conditions.
4. ํ๋น์ฑ โ validity or reasonable support โ๏ธ
ํ๋น์ฑ asks whether the conclusion follows from the premises. A statement may sound fancy, but if the conclusion jumps beyond the evidence, the reasoning is weak.
Weak:
์ด ์ ํ์ ๊ด๊ณ ์ ์์ฃผ ๋์จ๋ค. ๋ฐ๋ผ์ ํ์ง์ด ๊ฐ์ฅ ์ฐ์ํ๋ค.
This product appears often in advertisements. Therefore, its quality is the best. ๐บ
Stronger:
์ด ์ ํ์ ๋ด๊ตฌ์ฑ ์ํ์์ ๋์ ์ ์๋ฅผ ๋ฐ์๋ค. ๋ฐ๋ผ์ ํ์ง์ด ์ฐ์ํ๋ค๊ณ ๋ณผ ์ ์๋ค.
This product received high scores in durability tests. Therefore, it can be considered high quality. ๐งช
The stronger version uses evidence that actually supports the conclusion.
๐ ๏ธ How They Work in a Sentence
Pattern 1: ์ ์ ์ ๊ฒฐ๋ก ์ด ์ฐ๊ฒฐ๋๋ค โ the premise and conclusion are connected ๐
์ด ๋
ผ์ฆ์ ์ ์ ์ ๊ฒฐ๋ก ์ด ์์ฐ์ค๋ฝ๊ฒ ์ฐ๊ฒฐ๋์ด ์์ด ๋
ผ๋ฆฌ์ ์ผ๊ด์ฑ์ด ์๋ค.
This argument has logical consistency because the premise and conclusion are naturally connected. ๐งญ
Notes: ์์ฐ์ค๋ฝ๊ฒ means โnaturally,โ and ์ฐ๊ฒฐ๋๋ค means โto be connected.โ
Pattern 2: ์ฃผ์ฅ์ด ์๋ก ์ถฉ๋ํ๋ค โ claims conflict with each other ๐ฅ
์์ ์ฃผ์ฅ์ ๋ค์ ์ฃผ์ฅ๊ณผ ์ถฉ๋ํ๋ฏ๋ก ๋ชจ์์ด ๋ฐ์ํ๋ค.
The earlier claim conflicts with the later claim, so a contradiction occurs. ๐ง
Notes: ์์ means โearlier,โ ๋ค์ means โlater,โ and ์ถฉ๋ํ๋ค means โto collide or conflict.โ
Pattern 3: ๊ทผ๊ฑฐ์์ ๊ฒฐ๋ก ์ด ๋์ถ๋๋ค โ a conclusion is drawn from evidence ๐งช
์ ์๋ ๊ทผ๊ฑฐ์์ ๊ฒฐ๋ก ์ด ์ถฉ๋ถํ ๋์ถ๋์ง ์์ผ๋ฏ๋ก ํ๋น์ฑ์ด ์ฝํ๋ค.
The validity is weak because the conclusion is not sufficiently drawn from the presented evidence. โ๏ธ
Notes: ์ ์๋๋ค means โto be presented,โ ์ถฉ๋ถํ means โsufficiently,โ and ๋์ถ๋๋ค means โto be derived or drawn.โ
๐งฉ General Formation Rule
This is a vocabulary-and-reading skill lesson, so there is no conjugation exception to memorize. Instead, use this reading formation rule:
Argument consistency check = claim + premise + evidence + conclusion + condition check
- Find the ์ฃผ์ฅ (claim).
- Identify the ์ ์ (premise or assumption).
- Check the ๊ทผ๊ฑฐ (reason/evidence).
- Compare the ๊ฒฐ๋ก (conclusion).
- Ask whether any condition, exception, or wording creates ๋ชจ์ (contradiction). ๐งญ
Useful sentence frames:
- ์ด ๋ ผ์ฆ์ ๋ ผ๋ฆฌ์ ์ผ๊ด์ฑ์ด ์๋ค. โ This argument has logical consistency.
- ์ด ์ฃผ์ฅ์ ์์ ์ ์ ์ ๋ชจ์๋๋ค. โ This claim contradicts the earlier premise.
- ๊ทผ๊ฑฐ๊ฐ ๋ถ์กฑํ์ฌ ๊ฒฐ๋ก ์ ํ๋น์ฑ์ด ์ฝํ๋ค. โ The conclusionโs validity is weak because the evidence is insufficient.
- ์์ธ ์กฐ๊ฑด์ด ๋ช ํํ์ฌ ๋ชจ์ ๋ถ์ฌ๊ฐ ํ๋ณด๋๋ค. โ The absence of contradiction is secured because the exception condition is clear.
๐ Cross-check note
The vocabulary and usage in this lesson were cross-checked against National Institute of Korean Language resources at korean.go.kr, including usage around ๋
ผ์ฆ, ํ๋น์ฑ, ์ผ๊ด์ฑ, and academic writing evaluation language. โ
๐ช Synonym Alert
- ๋ ผ๋ฆฌ์ ์ผ๊ด์ฑ โ logical consistency; common in academic analysis and evaluation writing.
- ์ผ๊ด์ฑ โ consistency; broader and can describe behavior, policy, tone, or logic.
- ๋ชจ์ ๋ถ์ฌ โ absence of contradiction; formal and analytical.
- ์๋ค๊ฐ ๋ง๋ค โ to make sense, to be coherent; everyday expression.
- ํ๋น์ฑ โ validity or reasonableness; formal, academic, and policy-related.
- ์ค๋๋ ฅ โ persuasiveness; focuses on how convincing the argument feels, not only whether it is logically valid.
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge
- โ ๋ ผ๋ฆฌ์ ์ผ๊ด์ฑ = โthe argument is trueโ โ โ It means the parts do not contradict each other; truth is a separate question. ๐งญ
- โ ํ๋น์ฑ = โI personally agreeโ โ โ It means the conclusion is reasonably supported by the premises. โ๏ธ
- โ ์์ธ always creates ๋ชจ์ โ โ A clearly limited exception can preserve consistency. ๐
- โ A fancy connector like ๋ฐ๋ผ์ proves the logic โ โ Connectors signal reasoning, but the evidence still has to support the conclusion. ๐
- โ Hidden assumptions do not matter โ โ A hidden ์ ์ can quietly carry the whole argument like a tiny forklift. ๐๏ธ
๐ Once you can separate ๋ชจ์, ์ ์ , and ํ๋น์ฑ, academic Korean arguments become less like fog and more like a map. ๐บ๏ธ
