순간 means moment / instant.
 
When a clause comes before 순간, Korean can describe the exact moment when another event happens:
 
the moment that A happens, B happens
 
the instant I saw/heard/arrived/opened it, something changed

This grammar is great for stories, sudden reactions, realizations, accidents, emotional moments, and dramatic timing.

🧠 What Is 순간 Doing?

순간 is a noun meaning moment. The phrase before it describes which moment.
 
Tiny map:
  • 보다 = to see
  • 본 순간 = the moment someone saw
  • 그 사진을 본 순간 = the moment I saw that photo
 
Common chunks:
  • 처음 본 순간 — the moment I first saw it/them
  • 문을 여는 순간 — the moment the door opens / someone opens the door

🧩 Formation Rules

1. Action in progress / as it happens: verb stem + -는 순간

Use -는 순간 when the moment is the action happening right then.
 
  • 열다 → 여는 순간 — the moment someone opens
  • 들어오다 → 들어오는 순간 — the moment someone comes in
  • 시작하다 → 시작하는 순간 — the moment it starts
  • 말하다 → 말하는 순간 — the moment someone says/speaks
  • 누르다 → 누르는 순간 — the moment someone presses
 

2. Completed instant / already happened: verb stem + -(으)ㄴ 순간

Use -(으)ㄴ 순간 when the action has just happened or is treated as completed at that instant.
 
  • 보다 → 본 순간 — the moment someone saw
  • 듣다 → 들은 순간 — the moment someone heard
  • 도착하다 → 도착한 순간 — the moment someone arrived
  • 끝나다 → 끝난 순간 — the moment it ended
  • 깨닫다 → 깨달은 순간 — the moment someone realized
 

3. Adjectives before 순간

Adjectives can describe a moment as a noun phrase:
  • 중요한 순간 — an important moment
  • 행복한 순간 — a happy moment
  • 위험한 순간 — a dangerous moment
 
But for “the moment something becomes/feels adjective,” Korean often uses a verb-like expression:
  • 위험해지는 순간 — the moment it becomes dangerous
  • 조용해진 순간 — the moment it became quiet
 

4. Noun + 인 순간

Use this when the clause means “the moment it is N,” but it is less common than action examples.
  • 기회인 순간 — the moment it is an opportunity
  • 문제인 순간 — the moment it is a problem
 
For most learners, focus on action verbs: 여는 순간, 본 순간, 들은 순간, 도착한 순간.
