TL;DR π¦
- π ~κ³ [~go] β "and" (connecting two actions/sentences)
- π ~μμ/μ΄μ [~a-seo/eo-seo] β "because / so" (cause and effect)
- π ~μ§λ§ [~ji-man] β "but" (contrast)
- π ~μΈ κ² κ°μμ [~in geot ga-ta-yo] β "I think it's..."
- π ~λΌκ³ μκ°ν΄μ [~ra-go saeng-ga-kae-yo] β "I think that..."

Β
π The Big Picture
So far, you've mastered short, useful sentences β μ΄κ±° μΌλ§μμ?, μ²μ²ν λ§ν΄ μ£ΌμΈμ, λ¨Έλ¦¬κ° μνμ. That's the foundation of basic speaking. The next step toward intermediate Korean isn't learning hundreds of new words β it's learning to connect the sentences you already know into longer, more natural-sounding speech using connectors like ~κ³ , ~μμ/μ΄μ, and ~μ§λ§.
- (two short sentences) λ°°κ° μνμ. μ½κ΅μ κ°μ. β "My stomach hurts. I'm going to the pharmacy."
- (connected) λ°°κ° μνμ μ½κ΅μ κ°μ. β "Because my stomach hurts, I'm going to the pharmacy."
The information is the same β but the second version sounds like a fluent thought, not a list of facts.
π Connectors as the Bridge: ~κ³ vs. ~μμ/μ΄μ vs. ~μ§λ§
~κ³ simply lists or sequences actions ("and"). ~μμ/μ΄μ shows cause-and-effect ("because... so..."). ~μ§λ§ shows contrast ("but"). Choosing the right one makes your meaning much clearer.
- (~κ³ , sequence) νΈμμ μ κ°κ³ μΌκ°κΉλ°₯μ μμ΄μ β "I went to the convenience store and bought a triangle kimbap"
- (~μμ/μ΄μ, cause) λ°°κ° κ³ νμ νΈμμ μ κ°μ΄μ β "Because I was hungry, I went to the convenience store"
- (~μ§λ§, contrast) λΉμΈμ§λ§ λ§μμ΄μ β "It's expensive, but it's delicious"
A helpful trick: if the second clause is a result of the first, use ~μμ/μ΄μ. If it's just another fact happening around the same time, use ~κ³ . If it pushes back against the first clause, use ~μ§λ§.

J: "Ah, so it's connecting it into one sentence!"

π§ Speaking Tip
A simple daily exercise: take two sentences you said today and try connecting them with ~κ³ , ~μμ/μ΄μ, or ~μ§λ§. For example, "λ°°κ° κ³ νμ. μ λ
μ λ¨Ήμ κ±°μμ" becomes "λ°°κ° κ³ νμ μ λ
μ λ¨Ήμ κ±°μμ." This habit, repeated daily, is one of the fastest ways to bridge from basic to intermediate speaking.
Also try adding your opinion to a plain statement with ~μΈ κ² κ°μμ or ~λΌκ³ μκ°ν΄μ β it instantly makes your speech sound more thoughtful and conversational.
β οΈ Pitfalls to Dodge
- β Stringing every sentence together with κ·Έλ¦¬κ³ (and then... and then...) β β Use ~κ³ /~μμ/~μ§λ§ to show the actual relationship between ideas
- β Avoiding longer sentences out of fear of mistakes β β Start small β connect just two short sentences at a time
- β Forgetting that ~μμ/μ΄μ implies cause, not just sequence β β Use ~κ³ if there's no cause-and-effect relationship
- β Stating opinions as flat facts β β Soften with ~μΈ κ² κ°μμ or ~λΌκ³ μκ°ν΄μ for a more natural, conversational tone
