손짓 [son-jit] (hand gestures) are a natural part of everyday Korean speech, and a few of them work differently than what you might expect. The biggest one: to beckon someone over, Koreans wave with the palm facing down, fingers fluttering toward themselves β€” palm-up beckoning (common in some Western countries) is reserved for calling animals and can come across as rude toward people.

Pointing directly at a person with a single finger can feel accusatory or rude in Korean culture. Instead, people often gesture toward someone or something with an open hand, or simply nod/glance in that direction. Pointing with a finger at objects or directions (like on a map) is generally fine.
