Using '그러니까요'
The Korean expression that says "exactly" — and why it's one of the most powerful agreement tools in conversation.
Iru Helper Note
그러니까요 is one of those expressions that takes 0.3 seconds to say and instantly makes you sound natural. It means "exactly" or "that's what I'm saying" — and knowing when to use it is a real fluency marker.
(Exactly — I thought the same thing.)
🙌 What You'll Learn Today
그러니까요 is the Korean way of saying "right?", "exactly", "that's what I mean", or "I know, right!" depending on context. It's used to validate someone's point, align with their feelings, or echo agreement with emphasis. Unlike 맞아요 (which states a fact is correct), 그러니까요 says "yes, and I feel that too." Today you'll learn the full range of how it's used so you can drop it naturally into any conversation.
Nuance Map
Form | Nuance | Use When |
Exactly / that's right | Validating someone's statement strongly |
| I know, right! | Expressing shared feeling or shared frustration |
| I know... (soft/weary) | Sympathetic agreement, slightly resigned |
Yeah, I know / tell me about it | Casual version; close friends |
Yeah / right (very casual) | Close friends, informal situations |
Right, exactly | Stacking for stronger emphasis |
Contracted casual form | Spoken only; very natural |
맞아요 confirms that a fact is correct. 그러니까요 says "I feel the same way" or "you're putting into words what I was thinking." They can overlap but have different cores: 맞아요 = fact agreement; 그러니까요 = feeling/perspective alignment.
그러게요 — the casual twin:
그러게요 (or even shorter 그러게) is used the same way as 그러니까요 but is softer and more casual. Between close friends, 그러게 or 그니까 is extremely natural. In polite conversation, stick with 그러니까요.
💬 Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 — Shared frustration
(The weather is so hot lately. How can it be this hot?)
(Exactly! I'm suffering too.)
(If I'd known it'd be like this, I would have planned fewer summer trips.)
B: 그러게요...
(I know...)
Dialogue 2 — Validating a point in conversation
(I think you really need to practice a lot for your skills to improve.)
(Exactly — I think the same. There's a limit to theory alone.)
A: 맞아요.
(Right. You have to actually use it.)
🌏 Cultural Note — 공감의 대화 (Empathic Conversation)
Korean conversation culture places high value on 공감 (empathy and resonance) — the sense that the other person genuinely gets you. 그러니까요 is one of the primary tools for expressing this.
When someone shares a frustration, opinion, or observation and you respond with 그러니까요, you're not just agreeing — you're saying "I see what you see, I feel what you feel." This is subtly different from just saying 맞아요, which can sound more like a verdict.
Learning to use 그러니까요 naturally — including knowing when to let it trail softly (그러니까요...) vs. when to say it with energy (그러니까요!) — is one of the clearest signs of conversational maturity in Korean.

In your next Korean conversation, whenever someone makes a point you agree with, try replacing 맞아요 with 그러니까요 once. Notice how it shifts the feeling from "fact check" to "genuine resonance." That subtle difference is what makes Korean conversation feel natural and warm.

Common Pitfall
그러니까요 is a response — it always comes after someone else's statement, not at the start of a new topic. If you use it as an opener without context, it sounds like you're continuing a conversation that isn't there. Always let the other person's point set it up first.

Vocabulary Cheat Sheet
Korean | English |
To be exhausted |
Charm / appeal |
In the blink of an eye |
Luxury |
To be overwhelmed |
The more you learn... |
Grammar Tip
알수록 is built from 알다 (to know) + -수록 (the more...). -(으)ㄹ수록 means "the more [verb]...": 공부할수록 (the more you study), 볼수록 (the more you see). It's a great pattern for expressing how Korean — or anything — grows on you: 한국어는 알수록 재미있어요 (Korean gets more interesting the more you learn).
