Not everyone is loud and outgoing — and Korean has a rich set of words for describing people who are more reserved, composed, and careful. Whether you're talking about a quiet coworker, a thoughtful friend, or even your own personality, these five words let you describe "quiet" personalities with nuance instead of just saying 조용한 사람 every time.

🎨 The Core Personality Family

1. 말수가 적다 — to be a person of few words 🤐
Literally "the amount of speech (말수) is little (적다)" — describes someone who naturally doesn't talk much.
  • 그는 말수가 적어서 처음엔 차갑게 느껴졌어요. (He doesn't talk much, so at first he seemed cold.)
  • 우리 아빠는 말수가 적은 편이에요. (My dad tends to be a man of few words.)
Note: 말수 is a noun (amount of talk), so it always pairs with 가/는 + 적다/많다.
2. 차분하다 — to be calm / composed 😌
Describes someone's emotional steadiness — staying settled and unflustered, especially under pressure.
  • 그녀는 어떤 상황에서도 차분해요. (She's calm in any situation.)
  • 차분하게 다시 한번 설명해 주세요. (Please explain it again, calmly.)
Note: Often paired with 성격 (personality) — 차분한 성격.
3. 조용하다 — to be quiet 🤫
Describes low noise or volume — can apply to people, places, or sounds.
  • 도서관은 항상 조용해요. (The library is always quiet.)
  • 그는 조용한 성격이라 말수가 적어요. (He has a quiet personality, so he doesn't talk much.)
Note: 조용히 (adverb) is used for actions — 조용히 걸어요 (walk quietly).
4. 신중하다 — to be careful / prudent 🧐
Describes thinking things through carefully before acting or deciding — thoughtful and deliberate.
  • 중요한 결정은 신중하게 내려야 해요. (Important decisions should be made carefully.)
  • 그는 신중한 사람이라 실수가 거의 없어요. (He's a careful person, so he rarely makes mistakes.)
Note: Often used for decisions, words, and choices — not physical actions.
5. 내향적 — introverted 🌙
A personality trait describing someone who recharges through alone time and prefers smaller, quieter settings.
  • 저는 내향적인 편이라 모임이 끝나면 좀 쉬어야 해요. (I'm pretty introverted, so I need to rest after gatherings.)
  • 내향적인 사람도 친한 사람과는 말이 많아요. (Even introverted people talk a lot with close friends.)
Note: Attaches with 이다 (내향적이에요), not 하다 — 내향적하다 ❌.

  1. 그는 평소에 말수가 적어서 회의에서 의견을 잘 말하지 않아요. (He doesn't talk much normally, so he rarely shares opinions in meetings.) 🤐 — 말수가 적다 describes a stable trait, often paired with 평소에 (normally).
  1. 갑작스러운 소식에도 그녀는 차분하게 대처했어요. (Even with the sudden news, she handled it calmly.) 😌 — 차분하게 is the adverb form, showing the manner of acting calmly under pressure.
  1. 도서관은 항상 조용해서 공부하기 좋아요. (The library is always quiet, so it's good for studying.) 🤫 — 조용하다 describes the noise level of a place, not just a person.

🧩 General Formation Rule

  • 말수가 적다 → 말수가 적어요 (present) / 말수가 적은 (사람, modifier) / 말수가 적었어요 (past) — 말수 is a noun, so 적다 conjugates as a regular -다 adjective attached to 말수가.
  • 차분하다 → 차분해요 / 차분한 (성격) / 차분하게 (adverb) / 차분했어요 (past)
  • 조용하다 → 조용해요 / 조용한 (곳) / 조용히 (adverb) / 조용했어요 (past)
