🧠 What Is 채 Doing?

• 신발을 신다 = to put on/wear shoes

• 신발을 신은 채 = in the state of wearing shoes

• 신발을 신은 채로 들어오다 = to come in while still wearing shoes

• 신발을 신은 채로 — with shoes on

• 옷을 입은 채로 — with clothes on

• 불을 켠 채로 — with the light on

• 문을 연 채로 — with the door open

• 눈을 감은 채로 — with eyes closed

• 아무 말도 하지 않은 채 — without saying anything

🧩 Formation Rules

1. Vowel-ending action verb stem + ㄴ 채(로)

• 자다 → 잔 채로 — while asleep / in a slept state

• 켜다 → 켠 채로 — with it turned on

• 끄다 → 끈 채로 — with it turned off

• 가다 → 간 채로 — after going and remaining away

2. Consonant-ending action verb stem + 은 채(로)

• 입다 → 입은 채로 — with clothes on

• 신다 → 신은 채로 — with shoes on

• 닫다 → 닫은 채로 — with it closed

• 앉다 → 앉은 채로 — while seated

3. ㄹ-ending stems drop ㄹ + ㄴ 채(로)

• 열다 → 연 채로 — with it open

• 살다 → 산 채로 — while alive / in a living state

• 만들다 → 만든 채로 — with it made and left that way

4. Negative: -지 않은 채(로)

• 먹지 않은 채로 나갔어요. — I went out without eating.

• 확인하지 않은 채 제출했어요. — I submitted it without checking.

• 아무 말도 하지 않은 채 떠났어요. — They left without saying anything.
