TL;DR
- -에 marks static locations (where something is or happens) 📍
- -에서 marks dynamic locations (where an action takes place) 🎬
- Both attach directly to location nouns, but they're not interchangeable! 🚫
What are location markers? 🗺️
In Korean, you can't just say "I'm school" or "I eat restaurant" 🙅♀️
You need special particles to show the relationship between a place and what's happening there ✨
That's where -에 and -에서 come in! They're like little location tags you attach to place nouns 🏷️
-에: "at/in/to" (static location) 📍
Use -에 when talking about where something/someone exists or where you're going 🎯
It's all about being somewhere, not doing something there! 💭
Examples 🌟
→ 집에 있어요. (I'm at home.)
→ 학교에 가요. (I go to school.)
→ 서울에 살아요. (I live in Seoul.)
→ 책상에 책이 있어요. (There's a book on the desk.)
Notice how these are all about where you are or where you're going 🚶♀️
-에서: "at/in" (action location) 🎬
Use -에서 when talking about where an action happens 💥
Think: "This is the stage where the action takes place!" 🎭
Examples 🌟
→ 도서관에서 공부해요. (I study at the library.)
→ 식당에서 밥을 먹어요. (I eat at a restaurant.)
→ 공원에서 운동해요. (I exercise at the park.)
→ 카페에서 친구를 만나요. (I meet friends at a café.)
See the difference? 👀 You're doing something at these places! 🏃♀️
The Big Difference 🔍
Here's the magic trick to remember 🪄
-에 = being somewhere or going somewhere 🧘♀️➡️
-에서 = doing something somewhere 🎯
Compare these:
→ 학교에 있어요. (I'm at school.) ← just existing there! 🧍♀️
→ 학교에서 공부해요. (I study at school.) ← doing an action! ✍️
→ 집에 가요. (I'm going home.) ← movement to a place! 🚶
→ 집에서 쉬어요. (I rest at home.) ← doing something there! 🛋️
Exceptions & Special Cases ⚠️
"집" (home) is special 🏠
When you say "go home" or "come home," Korean drops the -에 entirely! 😮
→ 집 가요. (I'm going home.) ← NOT 집에 가요!
→ 집 와요. (I'm coming home.) ← NOT 집에 와요!
But you keep -에 for other "being" verbs:
→ 집에 있어요. (I'm at home.) ← -에 stays! ✅
Verbs of existence always use -에 🌱
The verbs 있다 (to exist/be) and 살다 (to live) always use -에, never -에서 🚫
→ 서울에 살아요. (I live in Seoul.) ← NOT 서울에서!
→ 방에 있어요. (I'm in the room.) ← NOT 방에서!
Quick Decision Guide 🤔
Ask yourself: "Am I talking about doing an action at this place?" 🎯
YES → Use -에서 🎬
NO (just being there or going there) → Use -에 📍
