Future Continous

Keyword #
-고 있을 것이다, 미래, 진행

3 Sentence Summary of This Lesson:
  • The future continuous form "-고 있을 것이다" expresses actions that will be in progress at a future moment
  • It attaches to verb stems regardless of batchim, and "것" (thing) is often shortened to "거" in conversation
  • This form also means "probably" when making assumptions about ongoing actions

To say that you “will be” in the middle of doing something or that something “will be” ongoing at that moment, you would use the “future” continuous form, which is “-고 있을 것이다.” This would be attached to a verb stem. Pretty much the same rule as present and past continuous.

e. g.)
먹다 → 먹 → 먹고 있다 → 먹고 있었다 → 먹고 있을 것이다. (I will be eating)
생각하다 → 생각하 → 생각하고 있다 → 생각하고 있었다 → 생각하고 있을 것이다. (I will be thinking)
자다 → 자 → 자고 있다 → 자고 있었다 → 자고 있을 것이다 (I will be sleeping)

Whether the preceding letter has a batchim or not, just add “-고 있을 것이다.”
“것” means “thing.” We often use it to refer to -ing words, like in “I will be drinking.”
The future continuous, or 미래진행형, is used to describe an action that would be happening at that future moment.

In another form, we use it as an expression to mean “probably.”

e.g.)
→ 철수는 아마 그렇게 생각하고 있을 야.
Chulsoo probably thinks so/ think like that/ thinks that is it.

“것” in daily conversations is often simplified to “거.”

→ 영미는 아마 자고 있을 거야.
Youngmi is probably sleeping/asleep.
