3 Sentence Summary of This Lesson:
  • Object markers '을' and '를' identify the word receiving the action in a sentence.
  • Use '을' after consonant endings (batchim) and '를' after vowel endings.
  • They follow the same batchim rule as subject markers for smooth pronunciation.

The third most important marker are ‘을’ and ‘를’. These mark that a word is the object in a sentence.

Just like subject markers, there are two because of batchims, but they are essentially the same.

If the letter that comes right before the marker has a batchim, you will use ‘을’. If it doesn’t, you will use ‘를’.

e.g.) 나비를 → The last letter of the word is ‘비’, so attach ‘를’.
칫솔을 → The last letter of the word is ‘솔’, ‘ㄹ’ being the batchim, attach ‘을’

The reason for this distinction is again to make sure that the sound flows smoothly, instead of choppy.

Now that you’ve covered the three most important types of markers, here’s a sample sentence that contains all of them.

오늘 나비 봤어요.
As for today, I am the one who saw the butterfly.
