🌈 The Big Picture

-지 않겠어요? looks like a negative question, but in many real sentences it is not asking “no?” in a literal way. It often works like a polite rhetorical question.
 
Think:
  • “Wouldn’t it be…?”
  • “Don’t you think it would…?”
  • “Isn’t it likely that…?”
  • “Wouldn’t that cause…?”
  • “Wouldn’t it make sense to…?”

1. Softly asking for agreement

Use it when you want the listener to agree with a reasonable point.

Use it to make a concern sound less blunt.

Adjective / descriptive verb

Adjective stem + -지 않겠어요?
  • 좋다 → 좋지 않겠어요? — Wouldn’t it be good?
  • 낫다 → 낫지 않겠어요? — Wouldn’t it be better?
  • 필요하다 → 필요하지 않겠어요? — Wouldn’t it be necessary?
  • 위험하다 → 위험하지 않겠어요? — Wouldn’t it be dangerous/risky?
 

Action verb

Verb stem + -지 않겠어요?
  • 도움이 되다 → 도움이 되지 않겠어요? — Wouldn’t it be helpful?

🔍 Real Question vs Rhetorical Question

Real question

The speaker genuinely asks for information.

Rhetorical question

The speaker expects agreement.
  • 이렇게 하는 게 더 좋지 않겠어요?
    • Wouldn’t doing it this way be better?
 
How to tell:
  • If the sentence is about a proposal, judgment, warning, or general truth, it is often rhetorical.
  • If the sentence is about someone’s actual plan or intention, it may be a real question.

A little firmer and more persuasive. The speaker often expects agreement.

Softer, more tentative, more like “wouldn’t it maybe…?”
  • 이 방법이 더 효과적이지 않을까요?

Shortcut:
  • 않겠어요? = polite but more confident
  • 않을까요? = polite and more tentative
