TL;DR 🦄
- -았/었더라면 means if I had… / if it had been…
- Use it to imagine a different past and speculate about a result that did not happen.
- It often pairs with -았/었을 텐데 or -았/었을 거예요: 미리 알았더라면 준비했을 텐데요. — If I had known in advance, I would have prepared.
🎧 Iru Helper Note Use Korean Helper Widgets to listen to 알았더라면, 갔더라면, 먹었더라면, and 좋았더라면. Notice the reflective “looking back” feeling in 더라면.
🌈 The Big Picture
-았/었더라면 is Korean’s “alternate past timeline” grammar. You look back at something that already happened and imagine a different version:
- “If I had known…”
- “If I had gone…”
- “If the weather had been good…”
- “If things had been different…”
This grammar is not just a regular “if.” It feels retrospective. The speaker is looking back and thinking about a past condition that did not happen, or was not true.
Examples:
- 미리 알았더라면 더 준비했을 거예요.
[mi-ri a-ra-tteo-ra-myeon deo jun-bi-hae-sseul geo-ye-yo]
If I had known in advance, I would have prepared more. 🧳
- 일찍 출발했더라면 늦지 않았을 텐데요.
[il-jjik chul-bal-hae-tteo-ra-myeon neut-ji a-na-sseul ten-de-yo]
If we had left early, we would not have been late. 🚆
- 날씨가 좋았더라면 산책했을 거예요.
[nal-ssi-ga jo-a-tteo-ra-myeon san-chae-kae-sseul geo-ye-yo]
If the weather had been good, I would have taken a walk. 🌤️
The emotional flavor can be regret, disappointment, relief, or simple reflection. The core idea is: past condition + imagined past result.
🎨 The Core Past-Speculation Family
1. Action verbs: “If I had done…”
Use the past form + 더라면.
- 가다 → 갔더라면 — if I had gone
- 먹다 → 먹었더라면 — if I had eaten
- 공부하다 → 공부했더라면 — if I had studied
- 듣다 → 들었더라면 — if I had listened
2. Descriptive verbs/adjectives: “If it had been…”
Use the past descriptive form + 더라면.
- 좋다 → 좋았더라면 — if it had been good
- 쉽다 → 쉬웠더라면 — if it had been easy
- 빠르다 → 빨랐더라면 — if it had been fast
- 가능하다 → 가능했더라면 — if it had been possible
3. Existence/state: “If there had been…”
- 시간이 있었더라면 — if there had been time / if I had had time
- 문제가 없었더라면 — if there had been no problem
- 기회가 있었더라면 — if there had been a chance
4. Nouns: “If it had been N…”
For nouns, use N이었다면/였다면 or the more retrospective N이었더라면/였더라면.
- 친구였다면 — if they had been a friend
- 학생이었다면 — if they had been a student
- 사실이었더라면 — if it had been true
For this lesson, the main pattern is still the verb/adjective form: -았/었더라면.
🛠️ How It Works in Sentences
Most sentences have two parts:
- Past condition: -았/었더라면
- Imagined result: usually -았/었을 거예요, -았/었을 텐데요, or -(으)ㄹ 수 있었을 거예요
Examples:
- 시간이 더 있었더라면 끝낼 수 있었을 거예요.
[si-ga-ni deo i-sseo-tteo-ra-myeon kkeun-nael su i-sseo-sseul geo-ye-yo]
If I had had more time, I would have been able to finish. ⏰
- 설명을 잘 들었더라면 실수하지 않았을 텐데요.
[seol-myeong-eul jal deu-reo-tteo-ra-myeon sil-su-ha-ji a-na-sseul ten-de-yo]
If I had listened carefully to the explanation, I would not have made a mistake. 👂
- 그때 도와줬더라면 결과가 달라졌을지도 몰라요.
[geu-ttae do-wa-jwo-tteo-ra-myeon gyeol-gwa-ga dal-la-jyeo-sseul-ji-do mol-la-yo]
If I had helped then, the result might have changed. 🧩
