TL;DR 🦄
- 📏 -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 means since / as / given that, when the first clause is a basis, fact, or evidence for what follows.
- 🧠 It often says: “Because this much is true, this result/expectation makes sense.”
- ⚖️ It is related to 만큼 (as much as), but this lesson focuses on the reason/evidence meaning: 중요한 만큼 신중해야 해요. — Since it is important, we should be careful.
🎧 Iru Helper Note — Use Korean Helper Widgets to listen to 중요한 만큼, 열심히 한 만큼, and 학생인 만큼. The grammar often sounds like one thoughtful “given that…” chunk. 🎧
🌈 The Big Picture
You already know 만큼 can mean as much as / to the degree of. In this intermediate pattern, -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 uses that same “degree/basis” feeling to create a reason:
“To the extent that A is true, B follows.”
“Given that A is true, B makes sense.”
“Since A is the case, B should happen.”
Examples:
- 중요한 만큼 신중하게 생각해야 해요.
[jung-yo-han man-keum sin-jung-ha-ge saeng-ga-kae-ya hae-yo] — Since it is important, we have to think carefully. 🧠
- 열심히 공부한 만큼 좋은 결과가 있을 거예요.
[yeol-sim-hi gong-bu-han man-keum jo-eun gyeol-gwa-ga i-sseul geo-ye-yo] — Since you studied hard / as much as you studied hard, there will be good results. 📚
- 학생인 만큼 규칙을 지켜야 해요.
[hak-saeng-in man-keum gyu-chi-geul ji-kyeo-ya hae-yo] — Since you are a student, you should follow the rules. 🏫
The feeling is not just “because.” It is more like the first fact gives a reasonable basis for the second statement. 📐
🎨 The Core Pattern
1. Descriptive verbs/adjectives: -(으)ㄴ 만큼
Use this when the first clause describes a state or quality.
- 중요하다 → 중요한 만큼 — since it is important
- 바쁘다 → 바쁜 만큼 — since someone is busy
- 어렵다 → 어려운 만큼 — since it is difficult
- 크다 → 큰 만큼 — since it is big
2. Action verbs — present/general: -는 만큼
Use this when the first clause is a present/general action or ongoing fact.
- 노력하다 → 노력하는 만큼 — since/as much as someone makes effort
- 많이 쓰다 → 많이 쓰는 만큼 — since/as much as someone uses it a lot
- 자주 만나다 → 자주 만나는 만큼 — since/as much as people meet often
3. Action verbs — completed/past: -(으)ㄴ 만큼
Use this when the action has already happened and becomes the evidence/basis.
- 공부하다 → 공부한 만큼 — since/as much as someone studied
- 준비하다 → 준비한 만큼 — since/as much as someone prepared
- 기다리다 → 기다린 만큼 — since/as much as someone waited
4. Nouns: N인 만큼
Use 인 만큼 after nouns.
- 학생 → 학생인 만큼 — since someone is a student
- 전문가 → 전문가인 만큼 — since someone is an expert
- 첫날 → 첫날인 만큼 — since it is the first day
🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence
- 이 일이 중요한 만큼 실수하면 안 돼요.
[i i-ri jung-yo-han man-keum sil-su-ha-myeon an dwae-yo] — Since this work is important, we must not make mistakes. 💼
중요한 만큼 gives the basis for being careful.
- 많이 연습한 만큼 자신감이 생겼어요.
[ma-ni yeon-seu-pan man-keum ja-sin-ga-mi saeng-gyeo-sseo-yo] — Since I practiced a lot / as much as I practiced, I gained confidence. 💪
The practice is the evidence for the confidence.
- 가격이 비싼 만큼 품질도 좋아야 해요.
[ga-gyeo-gi bi-ssan man-keum pum-jil-do jo-a-ya hae-yo] — Since the price is expensive, the quality should also be good. 💸
The high price creates an expectation.
- 대표인 만큼 책임감이 필요해요.
[dae-pyo-in man-keum chae-gim-ga-mi pi-ryo-hae-yo] — Since you are the representative, responsibility is needed. 🧑💼
🧩 Formation Rule
Descriptive verb/adjective + -(으)ㄴ 만큼
- vowel stem + ㄴ 만큼: 크다 → 큰 만큼
- consonant stem + 은 만큼: 작다 → 작은 만큼
- ㅂ irregular: 어렵다 → 어려운 만큼
- ㅎ irregular: 그렇다 → 그런 만큼
Action verb present/general + -는 만큼
- 하다 → 하는 만큼
- 먹다 → 먹는 만큼
- 보다 → 보는 만큼
- 살다 → 사는 만큼 (ㄹ drops before 는)
Action verb completed/past + -(으)ㄴ 만큼
- vowel stem + ㄴ 만큼: 공부하다 → 공부한 만큼
- consonant stem + 은 만큼: 먹다 → 먹은 만큼
- ㄹ stem drops: 만들다 → 만든 만큼
Noun + 인 만큼
- 학생인 만큼
- 어른인 만큼
- 전문가인 만큼
🔍 Reason/Evidence -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 vs Equality 만큼
Equality 만큼 ⚖️
Compares amount or degree.
- 친구만큼 먹어요. — I eat as much as my friend.
- 어제만큼 추워요. — It is as cold as yesterday.
Reason/evidence -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 📐
Uses a fact as the basis for a result, expectation, or advice.
- 많이 먹은 만큼 운동해야 해요. — Since you ate a lot, you should exercise.
- 중요한 만큼 조심해야 해요. — Since it is important, you should be careful.
Shortcut:
- N만큼 → comparison noun: “as much as N”
- clause + 만큼 → basis/reason: “given that clause…”
🔍 -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 vs Other Reason Grammar
-(으)ㄴ/는 만큼
Reason based on evidence, status, degree, or a known fact.
- 전문가인 만큼 잘 알 거예요. — Since they are an expert, they probably know well.
-기 때문에
Strong, direct “because.”
- 전문가이기 때문에 잘 알 거예요. — Because they are an expert, they probably know well.
-(으)니까
Good for reasons before requests, suggestions, or decisions.
- 시간이 없으니까 빨리 갑시다. — Since there’s no time, let’s go quickly.
-는 탓에
Negative blame.
- 준비를 못 한 탓에 실패했어요. — Because of not preparing, I failed.
-(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 sounds more measured and evidence-based than emotional. It often fits advice, expectations, judgments, and responsibilities.
🚫 Usage Limits
Use -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 when:
- the first clause is a fact, status, or evidence
- the second clause is a reasonable result, expectation, or responsibility
- you want a thoughtful “given that…” tone
- the sentence has a degree/proportion feeling
Avoid it when:
- you simply need a basic “because” sentence
- there is no clear basis/evidence relationship
- the result is random or unrelated
- you mean “thanks to” or “blame” specifically
Awkward:
- ❌ 배고픈 만큼 밥을 먹었어요. if you only mean “I ate because I was hungry.”
Natural:
- ✅ 배고파서 밥을 먹었어요. — I was hungry, so I ate.
- ✅ 배고픈 만큼 많이 먹었어요. — I ate a lot, to the extent that I was hungry / since I was that hungry.
📚 Cross-check note
This lesson builds on Equality: As much as: 만큼 and extends 만큼 into the intermediate connector -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼, where a fact or degree becomes the basis for the next clause. It also connects with reason lessons like The Strong Reason: -기 때문에, Reason for Request: -(으)니까, and Blaming a Cause: -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에. ✅
🪞 Synonym Alert
These are related, but not identical:
- 만큼 — as much as / as…as; equality or degree ⚖️
- -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 — since/given that; reason based on evidence or degree 📐
- -기 때문에 — because; strong general reason 💪
- -(으)니까 — since/because; useful before requests/suggestions 🧭
- -(으)ㄴ/는 탓에 — because of; negative/blame cause 🧨
- -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 — thanks to; positive cause 🌟
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ Treating every 만큼 as “because” → ✅ Check whether it compares amount/degree or gives a reason.
- ❌ 학생 만큼 for this pattern → ✅ 학생인 만큼 when it means “since someone is a student.”
- ❌ 중요하는 만큼 → ✅ 중요한 만큼 because 중요하다 is descriptive.
- ❌ 공부하는 만큼 좋은 결과가 있었어요 for a completed study effort → ✅ 공부한 만큼 좋은 결과가 있었어요.
- ❌ Using it when simple -아서/어서 is more natural → ✅ Use -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 when the first clause is a meaningful basis.
🎉 -(으)ㄴ/는 만큼 is your “given the evidence…” grammar. Use it when a fact, status, effort, or degree creates a natural result or expectation. 📐✨
